The 5 Most Influential First Person Shooters of All Time

Smosh: There are a lot of really great first person shooters, but not all of them are revolutionary. Most of them try to be fun, but don't have a lot of ambition past that. There are those certain games that change the way people think about gaming. They take the genre and revolutionize it so much that every game after it is affected by it. In other words, these are the games that everyone ripped off. Here are the most influential first person shooters.

Optical_Matrix4501d ago

How Call of Duty 4 isn't on there is beyond me. While I'm not a CoD fan, I find it hard to believe any enthusiast gamer would deny the huge impact that Call of Duty 4 has had on the last 5 years of first person shooters. Didn't only influence the genre moving forward from a gameplay perspective, but also a market perspective.

I don't think we would of seen nearly as many FPS as we have if Call of Duty 4 didn't blow up like it did back in 2007.

hennessey864501d ago

It was the last great COD, I loved that game.

joab7774501d ago

It deserves to b six, in order. It was obviously very influential.

Kalowest4501d ago (Edited 4501d ago )

COD got some features from Halo:CE and mixed them up abit. And Halo got features from Perfect Dark and Golden Eye. Each FPS got Features from the previous FPS and built on them.
If this was "The 10 Most Influential First Person Shooters of All Time"
Counter Strike, Call of Duty, BattleField, Killzone, and Team Fortress 2 would also be in the list.

squarecircle4500d ago

World at War was the last great COD, then after that you can see a huge directional shift as they move away from authenticity and believable scenarios to over the top Hollywood story lines and fantasy realities.

Not only FPS but a lot of genres. It basically layed out a print of what multiplayer is this generation

Knight_Crawler4501d ago (Edited 4501d ago )

Have to agree...Modern Warefare one really made the FPS the power house it is now in the gaming industry but I think the hate for Call of Duty comes from them releasing an annually re-skinned game every year with not much improvement and being owned by a greedy person like Kotic does not help - you have to admit that what he did to the original Infinity Ward team was messed up.

But I wont deny that the COD games are fun and very accessible to the casuals which is why it has a huge appeal.

Hopefully Call of Duty next gen goes back to what made hem famous in the first place and try to change up the formula a little but with every COD game release.

Bathyj4501d ago

I agree it influenced FPS's.
I dont agree it made them move forward.

Reverent4501d ago

I would agree that it didn't really move the FPS genre forward, but you can't deny that it moved multiplayer forward.

OOG4501d ago

my question would be what did CoD move forward in MP.. I have a few ideas but id rather see what people think

nirwanda4501d ago

HL2 was really really good, graphics were so advanced for the time, and had real physics too that made the world more beleveable

Reverent4501d ago

For me, HL2, and just the Source in engine in general shocked me by how near perfect the physics were while also being extremely processor friendly.

N0S3LFESTEEM4500d ago (Edited 4500d ago )

Only things that should be on this list... mind you I haven't read it yet.

Wolfenstien 3d
Doom
Goldeneye
Half-Life
Halo 2

joab7774501d ago

Hey, what do all these games have in common? They are not sequels. We got cod last gen, halo before that, and half life etc. Listen up! We need a new most influential which means a new ip.

Bioshock is still my all time favorite, with a slight nod ober half life but half life was more influential.

Kalowest4501d ago (Edited 4501d ago )

Yep that list is just about right.
Maybe replace Duck Hunt with Counter Strike.

stage884501d ago

I can't take this list seriously as COD 4 isn't there.

BanBrother4501d ago

Actually, it is perfectly understandable.

DUCK HUNT: Most people first experience with a 'FPS' so to speak.
DOOM: Waaaaay to obvious. Considered the pioneer of the FPS genre.
Half-Life: Introduced Epic story to FPS, and was just all round awesome.
Goldeneye 64: 4 player console MP. Nuff said.
Halo CE: Showed that the consoles can do FPS right, single-handedly responsible for the original Xbox not becoming a Dreamcast.

COD 4 was amazing, but massive console MP was already played by millions with Halo 2 on the original Xbox. Halo 3 had better matchmaking, as it took into account trueskill.

I think COD 4 should be commended for making online FPS more casual and larger than ever before, but not influential (at least not in the best of way).

Dear God it's been 4 years since infinite and no official update on anything lol.

Tacoboto5d ago

No official update on anything?

They replaced studio leadership
They changed the studio name
They announced the change to UE5
... all while supporting Infinite

The support to Infinite isn't what it originally should have been but they've still been providing tons of official updates over the years, and as recently as two months ago added a brand new weapon.

GamerRN4d ago

I think remaking Halo Combat Evolved, and going to 2 and 3 again, will help give the studio an idea of how to make a Halo game feel like Halo again

Tacoboto4d ago

Infinite did feel like Halo, that's not what the complaints were...

The complaints were almost literally everything else. Monetization, netcode and desync, the campaign structure, story, and single biome, the weaker-than-expected post-launch content.

InUrFoxHole4d ago

Gotta agree. Infinite felt like halo.

Profchaos5d ago

Dev times in modern days 4 years of silence isn't unheard of when things are running smoothly.

And around 6 months ago 343 did show a tech demo of ue5 using halo assets so it's not radio silence.

Given all the shake ups i am more surprised we're getting anything next year at all.

RaidenBlack5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

They coulda started with Halo 3 remake ... I know Halo CE remaster was not proper with the art style but still, remaking after a remaster seems dull, when Halo 3 and Reach have started to show some age.

PhillyDonJawn5d ago

Yeah I hate they used Halo reach artstyle. Hope this remake feel authentic yet fresh

--Onilink--5d ago

Probably the simplest to work around with. They are reportedly doing it in UE5, so its just as much an Anniversary thing, as its probably the studio getting familiar and setting up their tools and processes in the engine with an actual game, to facilitate the development of the next Halo

Profchaos5d ago

I'm guessing combat evolved has a smaller scope in general the later half of the game features a ton of backtracking and reused assets making it a easier game to remake on a deadline

Its also a better choice if this is the first game to be multiplatform mind you I think it's pretty much a given that anyone with a passing curiosity has played this by now in some way be it pc or brought a used console for a few bucks

darthv725d ago

This will likely come to PS5 at the same time. 25 years of XB.... shared with PS.

Obscure_Observer5d ago

It´s gonna be among best sellers on PS Store next year regardless.

raWfodog4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I would love to see Lost Odyssey come over to PS5. I would definitely buy that again. That was the first game that I played on my 360. Loved the story and battle system. One of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_9236d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil35d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.
