What the hell? Is this the new PlayStation controller?

Remember when we told you of rumblings on the next PlayStation system's controller and how it might have a touchscreen? Well, get a look at this strange thing. This image of what looks like a PlayStation-style controller plugged into something that looks like a development kit has been floating around for the past day.

New controller and the devkit. It looks the one proposed by neogaf members ( I knew they knew more than regular gamers which makes wonder if they were disguised SOny devs from the start). The light emitter will be used to be tracked by the new double HD PSEye and the litlle holes look to be like a built-in microphone.

The point of the touch pad is whatever the devs use it for. It doesn't need to be huge, nor should it have been expected to be on this established controller. If you were expecting even a 'large' screen that would be able to replace he standard input, I don't know why.

Edit: Actually upon second look, I think the size of the touchpad is adequate. I'm interested to see what Sony has up its sleeves with the use of it.

I doubt the intended use for the touchscreen will require you to keep your fingers on the handles of the controller. In game use will probably be limited to a display such as tactics in FIFA, while other uses will be reserved for none gaming. For instance, you won't have to hold it like a controller if you use it as a keypad. You would just place it on your lap.

Seems to be thicker, have a touchscreen/pad, eye toy sensor, built in speaker, a button or port for headset below ps button, and rework analogue sticks.

Hopefully the final product looks sleeker.

Looks like a prototype, I would expect something a little more sleek in the final. Also I don't think they will keep a large glowing bar on the top.

More importantly is how it feels (also I'm surprised on what you can do with a thin strip).

I hope that is only a prototype. The analog sticks, light on the top and weird (speaker?) holes in the middle of the controller make it look very strange and like a cheap third party controller. It reminds me the PSone with its curves though and I do like that aspect.

That's the coolest looking controller I've ever seen. It looks very high-tech , much more so than anything we've seen from any other game company. That looks like the definitive version of the Dual Shock right there. The PS4 is going to dominate.

I hated the original Xbox controller but the 360 one is much better. Still though if I had a choice for layout I'd choose the DualShock one and I have large hands and get no issues even with extended play sessions.

They should NEVER offset the analogs. NEVER. It's the most ridiculous controller design I've ever seen. I prefer the N64's tri-form controller to what the Wii U and 360 use(oddly enough, I liked the original Xbox's ORIGINAL controller). I'll never understand the completely WRONG notion that offset analog sticks are somehow more ergonomic than a symmetrical setup.

That said, I'm not particularly enthused. Seems a bit bulky for my tastes, and the touch pad at center won't be easy to reach during gameplay. Also not feeling the analog design. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with how they are now. And the D-pad is just... I don't like it. Too close together, which I think will hinder precision.

Still, this DOES look rather official. If it's not, then somebody went through a LOT of trouble to fake it.

I hope it gets refined quite a bit before the system releases.

I actually like this more than the PS3 controller just by viewing it. Seems to look more capable to grasp and the analog sticks are not convex. Never really liked the PS3 analog sticks.

I really like this design. It looks much more comfortable than a DS3, the analog sticks look perfect, the touchpad is an interesting idea, built-in Move light is a great idea and will allow for more complex games and new gameplay possibilities, the built-in speaker/mic will allow for interesting gameplay ideas (MGS codec calls, GTA phone calls, etc) as well as ensuring online communities are more social. This controller is great, and it's both a cheap and effective way to bundle the Move and a headset with every system.

Lack of controls/buttons is a big problem for games today, and it leads to streamlining and simplification of gameplay. Having the Move and the touchpad built in to the controller is great and will allow much more complex game mechanics next gen.

Just hoping IGN's source is correct and it's just an early Prototype. I hope the final D-Pad design ends up being more akin to the previous Dualshock's because the Prototype design looks like the 3rd party controllers were it's one big button.

Analog sticks look o.k...definitely will take some time getting used to looking at if the sticks this way because the PS controller design has been virtually the same for so many years. Personally I never had any issues with my thumbs slipping off the Analog Sticks like I've seen a number of people say over the years this console gen. I'd be fine if the Analog Sticks stayed exactly the same. Looks like the ridges along the edges will reduce any slippage some people were having on the DualShock 3's Analog Sticks, so I can see why Sony did implemented that into the design.

Now I just wish could see the L2 and R2 triggers b/c they definitely need some improvement over the DS3's.

never used the wiiu pro but it does look like a nice controller.
I cant sit here and say that the controller layout is what it was back in the ps2 days. you cant go back to a ps3 controller after using a 360 and feel comfortable. I bought a tiny usb adapter that lets me use a 360 controller on my ps3 its so much more enjoyable to play with that controller.

customization would be the best thing. they have a 3rd party that actually makes a controller that lets you switch positions of the d pad and sticks to how you like.

The controller looks like a legit prototype! Also why does the screen on the controller have a top side to it? Overlapping from the 90 degree so there's two parts to the screen. Maybe the top part will show notifications from the xmb and the front of the screen will integrate with the games.

They have concave analog nubs and the triggers have been redesigned, slightly bulkier build also a probable nod to 360 owners.

I remember a few months ago, when I wrote here that it was what the PS4 pad needed, I got a ton of thumbs down because "Sony didn't need it" and "the PS3 pad was already spot on".

Of course, now they've done just that, and Sony fans will think it's awesome after all.

It's all good though. Maybe I would have liked a slightly less angular form factor, but overall they seem to have corrected the real things that had to be corrected so I'm rather pleased.

Hmm, I...really like it. I kind of wanted Sony to make an entirely new controller (using the same controller for fifteen years can get boring) but this is the next best thing. It's different but still recognizable. The only thing I would change is the analog sticks, I would love if the analog sticks were concave like the 360, oh and better trigger buttons, again like the 360. The D-pad looks like the Vita's but bigger which is great because I think the Vita D-Pad is amazing so a bigger version of it is great in my book. Also, some have said it looks bulkier, which to me is a good thing. Sometimes the PS3 controller can be a bit too small for my hands, where as the 360 controller fits like a dream, so I have no problem with the controller being a bit bigger.

I hope the final one has a few cosmetic changes if this is the real deal, which I think it is. Sony will probably make the new Dualshock or whatever they call it to resemble the Vita's controls a little more like this prototype. The dpad and the control sticks resemble the Vita's. Move integration is interesting but not sure how it would be implemented into a two handed controller, and I'm curious about the supposed touch pad that is like two inches big. I feel like it has to be a touch screen or something not just a pad, it's small enough where it would be cheap.

I feel the complete opposite. With convex I had a least a bit of friction with my thumbs to stop them slipping. With concave since there is a groove my fingers always slip off. Can't tell you the amount of times this has happened.

- the touch screen in the middle is incredibly pointless and silly

I still don't understand why we need a screen/touchpad on the controller, it just seems gimmicky and something that will be forgotten in a few weeks, not to mention the unnecessary increased cost. If they do decide to go with the screen (almost certain they will) then I hope it doesn't stand out like the one in that prototype model. Sony are known for sleek designs so I hope it just blends in with the rest of the controller. Perhaps it could just be a black space in the middle of the controller but when the console is turned on, the start, select and PS buttons light up......maybe.

I really am not digging the touch screen. I really don't see the purpose? PS3 and 360 are known to be the gamers system, this touch screen business doesn't make sense. I am sure it probably has something to do with Vita or something, but I just want a comfortable controller with triggers for the L2 and R2. I own both systems and both controllers are fine, but the 360 is more rounded mainly because of the trigger buttons. Hopefully Sonys controller looks more polished then this as this is obviously an early prototype.
