Yoshinori Ono Interested in Reviving "Street Fighter Alpha" Series

When it first hit arcades in 1995, Street Fighter Alpha was a strange and welcome treat--it was a Street Fighter game done in a bright, animated style, with fast-paced battles reminiscent of the Street Fighter II anime movie. While they were fun games, the prequel series (taking place between the original Street Fighter and SFII) hasn't been seen since 2006's Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX.

With Capcom looking back at its library and asking gamers what they want to see in the digital space, a gamer tweeted his desire to see a console release of PSP exclusive SFA3 MAX alongside the upcoming Darkstalkers Resurrection. It drew the attention of Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono, leading to this exchange:

@CSLFiero: "Here's to a hoping a console release of Alpha 3 Max with DS: Resurrection"
@Yoshi_OnoChin: "I have interest in making something for [Alpha] series ;D"

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is my favourite Street Fighter game. But I highly doubt that we will see a new Street Fighter game with sprites because Crapcom already stated that drawing sprites is to expensive these days.

Yi-Long4135d ago

... but only if it's hand-drawn 2D sprites and backgrounds.

Information Minister4135d ago

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is my favorite 2D fighter ever. I would pay anything for a 2D SFA4 in 1080p HD. They could then recycle the sprites for an HD Capcom vs SNK. That would be a sight to behold.

Simon_Brezhnev4135d ago

He will ruin it. I want air blocking and i will be happy if not im not touching it. SFA3 is my favorite SF SF game too. I remember the days you fight bison you jump in the air your dead he does that overpowered super. lol

If they dont want to do sprites they should just make the graphics like Naruto Ninja Storm series with 2d gameplay.

Yi-Long4135d ago

... but regarding the 'if they don't want to do sprites' statement, I have to agree with you, that if 2d sprites is out of the question, they should go for 2D cell-shaded anime-style (sticking as close as possible to the anime-look of the Alpha series as possible), which the Naruto UNS series did very very well (it stayed very very true to the anime's look).

Capcom does a lot of thing wrong this gen ... but the one thing they've mastered imo are 2d enough feel , looks , deformations and animation with their 3d fighter engines .

Sure not everyone liked SF4's cartoony style , but its handling of hitboxes , and animation were top notch .

Graphically Marvel VS Capcom was simply astonishing too imo .

In short i'm not worried about a 2.5d alpha game on that end .

Yi-Long4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

... as well as Marvel vs Capcom 3 looked 'mediocre' at best.

I liked the gameplay. I just didn't like the look of the games.

MvC3 just looked 'plastic', and the character-design for SF4 was really poor, especially Ken with some really horrible hair. No wonder everbody wants to beat him up when he walks around like that.

Also, I felt both games had pretty boring backgrounds, as opposed to the backgrounds in SF2, SF3 and the SF Alpha series. (Except for the Chun-Li stage in SF4, which obviously was directly inspired from her stage in SF2 and again looked fantastic)

Baka-akaB4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

Like i've said , one can dislike the look and artstyle (even if i cant agree at all with you on MVC3 which was stunning imo) ... but there is no denying the animation and deformations , were more than 2d enough .

"All" that would be missing would be a proper artstyle fitting alpha

Moerdigan4135d ago

And yet if it's not sprite, I will probably not bother with it.

Yea I Loved Alpha 3. I've never played all the street fighters or even the first alpha games but I spent hours and hours with 3.

this is my dream game! And Mega Man X9 too....

ABizzel14135d ago

Loved 2 on Gamecube. Huge cast of characters, in a great fighting game.

OneAboveAll4135d ago

How about a new Street-Fighter EX game? With today's technology it could be great.

MegaLagann4135d ago

The first two EX games were great. I heard that Akira, the developers of the EX games, are actually working on a spiritual successor for the 3DS with all of the characters from the EX games that they own (so Skullomania and so on).

doogiebear4135d ago

No! The only good thing about the EX series was the AMAZING music (by Shinji Hosoe and Ayako Saso...she's the greatest female instrumentalist of all time)

ABizzel14135d ago

I actually enjoyed the games as well. They weren't the best fighting games, but they were fun and that's something missing in a lot of today's games.

If they remake them, they need to improve the gameplay by a good margin.

What about a Darkstalkers, Battle Arena Toshiden, and Power Stone.

kingPoS4135d ago (Edited 4135d ago )

Unfortunately most have never heard of Battle Arena Toshiden or Darkstalkers since those games were unappreciated back in the 90's.

I had fun times with Battle Arena Toshiden at Toys R' Us... Fun times.

World Tour in Alpha 3 was a nice touch. And I miss it dearly.

Hicken4135d ago

I'd much rather have a 2D game than the 3D ones.
