DmC Devil May Cry demon sex scene enrages fans

A tongue in cheek and rather tame sex scene in Capcom's DmC Devil May Cry has caused massive upset amongst a number of fans. Is it justified?

I'm upset with much more than just a sex scene...

Those who want to buy this game, go for it. I won't try to stop you. However me personally, as a fan of the Devil May Cry series since its first outing on PS2 back in the day... Both this company and this game have been an insult to me. Those who think I don't have reasons are more than welcome to ask for some, because I will gladly give you plenty as to why.

I have to agree with Snookies12. As a Devil May Cry fan, i am really pissed off at both Capcom and Ninja Theory. Capcom for licensing out this great franchise to such poor devs as Ninja Theory.. and Ninja Theory for being such poor devs. The face of the company at Ninja Theory, don't remember his name... the producer who wanted Dante to look like him, has been awful toward fans of the series and the way he treats potential customers is in the most obnoxious way i have ever seen.

I can point out a handful of reasons that make this game not worth buying for fans of the series. Alot of them have to do with the gameplay and the game engine that they are using, but PERSONALLY, the artistic and creative input from Ninja Theory are the things that piss me off the most.

I was always a fan of the series beauty, the artstyle and aura of this franchise were always that of goth, it was beautiful. Even though the dialogue of the story was sometimes bad, i loved to follow the story. The vibe of the games, was something unlike anything in the gaming market.

I'm not the one to jump the gun and dislike a game because of a new creative direction immediately. BUT.. and this is a big but(pun not intended)... first impressions are vital, especially when fans of the series expect nothing but fan service from a game such as Devil May Cry(where gameplay is the driver of this franchise). The gameplay has been neutralized in a way i could never imagine, don't mind the fact that S's are easy to acquire (goes against what the mechanic is for), i'm not overstating this point one bit, literally 4 hits and you have a SSS. They removed the freedom you have when choosing how to fight, instead you are forced to use a specific weapon for specific enemies. Basically, meaning if you don't play the game as Ninja Theory wants you can't enjoy it. Guns are useless. I could go on for ages, about the gameplay but the thing that pisses me off personally, is right in there in this sex scene. That proves my point, where first impressions usually have lot of meaning. I practically knew, that after the first trailer was released, i wouldn't be getting a Devil May Cry game i would enjoy.

I would love to see the Dante in Devil May Cry 4 return in a new game with Vergil. The story has so much potential. I want to delve deeper into the Sparda storyline and Vergil. Not about how authorities control us and monitor us, i don't like to be reminded of such things when playing games, when i play videogames i want to escape from reality. Not about how government is controlling us through sodas. *facepalm*

The only chance i will ever be able to enjoy a Devil May Cry game is if Capcom pull out the stick that's firmly placed in their ass and realize that pursuing this meaningless crowd pleasing of western gamers is only going to hurt them in the end. Realize that what you had to begin with was alright, too many games today need their japanese input back. I wish i could go back to the series, enjoy the victorian/goth/punk mix of the art. Personal opinion anyway, but lots of fans of the series will end up hating the gameplay i'm sure of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the sex scene was included not because it's vital to the plot or because it will add to character development, but because Tameem thinks sex scenes are ~cool~ and ~edgy~.

Man where to start... We all know quite a few people didn't like the new look. That's the first and most obvious one. The guy that's overseeing the game, (can't recall his name) has been so immature and unprofessional toward fans of the series it makes me sick. People on Twitter brought up legitimate concerns after the demo was released and his replies were downright infantile and rude in some cases. He even revealed that they weren't taking the development seriously.

I came in wanting to like the game, I really did when I got the demo. However I was disappointed right off the bat. First off, it's easy as hell. Even on the hardest difficulties. The enemies are so stupid, they barely even do anything. You can get an SSS combo in about 15 seconds and never lose it until you're hit. You can use the same move over and over for an SSS combo. You can get an SSS rank completion on a level even if you have the lowest rank for both time and enemies killed. Guns are no longer an option for fighting because it takes literally 30 seconds to kill one enemy with straight gunfire (unlike previous games which you could kill an enemy within 10). The weapons are unbalanced. There's no point in using his angel weapon when the demon one destroys like it does. The 30 FPS does not look appealing, but I can let that one slide. The dialogue is horrible from what I've seen and heard. I've seen countless videos of the demo having game breaking glitches and the guy overseeing the game said that the game would ship this way without fixes for them. Also, if the rumors about the story are true... It is going to be the most laughable ending ever, seriously... As well as the fact that Capcom/NT have been saying they've proven the angry fans wrong, and that the game is great.

Yeah, man. I have been playing DMC since the first title on PS2. I enjoy the series and to be fair the re-imaging didn't bother me in the slightest. I guess I wasn't as invested as other fans in the series. A new look didn't bother me as long as the game turned out okay.

Unfortunately, I disliked the demo too. The 30fps lock obviously put me off initially, but I hear the PC version supports 60fps? Either way it doesn't matter because I didn't like the whole direction of the game so I won't be playing it at all.

I didn't get to try the other difficulty settings before I deleted the demo off my hard drive. I am glad you gave reasons why you disliked it other than "its not Dante". Sorry that a franchise you obviously care about has been reduced to this. I hope people resist temptation and support this game.

In fact DMC has one of the most hilariously bad line of dialogue I've ever heard with the whole "I SHOULD'VE BEEN THE ONE TO FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIGHT!!!!" bit.

It's because of WHY the sex scene is in the game. Tameem shoe horned it in there because "all the big games" have had a sex scene lately. Games like Mass Effect or God of War (which are better games) had in there but with Mass Effect they added it to enhance a relationship status and with God of War they added them because Kratos is like the Honey Badger, he don't give a sh*t.

But DmC added it because Tameem doesn't know how to move on from old ideas. DmC is literally a mish mash of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, and now other games with sex scenes in them. It's a travesty of a game that should never have come into existence.

For the ones objecting, it is a reboot, if a reboot was the same devil may cry it would defeat the purpose of a reboot. Some people will just have to accept that times are changing, and I have a feeling it's more of the younger audiences that hate it than the older ones.

The reasons stated are assumptions of why it was in, but no one really knows until it's asked from the creators. Any game that has sex in it, is not necessary but it's in it anyway. Technically speaking any game with a story is not needed, all a game needs is gameplay a reason isn't necessary. It's just that players are more use to a storyline nowadays than the early years.

Umm, let me show you something that proves that DMC4's style meter was in no way as easy to build up as DmC's is. For starters, take a look at DmC's broken style meter.

Why do i complain? I choose to invest time and money in my hobby, and gaming industry has always been there to repay me. But lately it seems more companies care about making money more so than anything else, including keeping dignity intact. Just take a look at the scene. Has absolutely nothing in common with the series.

No troubles for me as it is really easy for me to not purchase this product, but when they use us fans and lie to the media by saying "we have listened to the hardcore devil may cry fans" by marketing this product as a true DMC game, you can bet your ass i'll be there to prove them wrong.

A company that will lie and treat potential customers as garbage, to steal your hard earned money, is no company that should be getting this much attention in this industry.

That's the entire point of this game. To give Dante an appropriate backstory.

Old Dante's backstory was he's the half demon and half human son of Sparda, and has a brother named Virgil who shares his lineage.

THAT's IT. What's there to complain about. They are trying to refresh a character that we know nothing about.

There's nothing there, and Capcom hired Ninja Theory to develop a game to improve and explain Dante as a character. That being said I wished they only hired them for story development and art style. I like most of the things about the new look, but overall it's an improvement to the constant castles and cathedrals of previous DMC's.

If you want to complain about the new look of Dante, then I can understand that. Did I prefer the old look? Yes, but that's nostalgia. Do I mind the new look? No i think he looks fine, and he looks more believable to me. The new loos is how I'd picture Dante (as far as how he looks in cutscenes).

But changing him from 1/2 demon + 1/2 human, to 1/2 demon + 1/2 angel is one of the dumbest complaints you naggers have come up with. If anything it's an improvement cause that means he's even more badass.

Dante also didnt ever have a clear background to begin with. All you really know is a basic background his story was never really fleshed out in the games. Yes there was a brief novel and thats what IMO DmC3 should have been based off of.

Capcom, this generation has insulted us gamers, and put us in the category with everyone else. Saying that if they change this, and add that, we will buy because it has the title of DMC. But then added nothing. Just changed it all. I was a fan of the series due to pretty much everything it had going for it and yet they changed it. Dante used to be cool and collect, always knowing the correct thing to say in a cool, suave, voice. Look at Ritsuka's comment below. He says it perfectly....and Vickers, God of War has sex scenes in it from GOW1, and it's part of that time period. Its a RE-BOOT. Its another persons take on the franchise. Certain things are SUPPOSED to change. Take Batman: Year One for example. In that particular version of Batman lore, Catwoman is a black prostitute.

But the point is in complaining, in telling Capcom they done f*cked up since announcing this massively changed and unnecessary reboot, is that people are still interested in the series. So that if this title manages to sell under expectations, which is something Capcom will never openly admit, there'll at least be more of a chance of being a DMC5 that goes back to the old story and formula rather than the series being outright canceled.

Batman year one is still Batman with just a few changes but the core concepts are still there and you know from the get go that it still is Batman. But what is this DMC reboot?

Story is completely new (including background story, Dante is now the son of a demon and angle), characters while sharing some names with prior games they are completely different in style and attitudes, combat system is more Heavenly Sword than DMC and not to mention that the overall theme and feel of the game is completely new too. This reboot takes itself way too seriously and NT tries too hard and all they do is making the story feel more and more pretentious.

How can you not see something so obvious? And I'm not saying that you shouldn't like the game but from the point of view of a fan this is a betrayal and is hard not to rage.

Holy crap, it astounds me how much people take this series seriously. Here are my points:

- There is a line between "this is a cause for concern" and "this series is completely dead"

- I barely f***ing care how it compares to the original series. It's so different it may as well be its own game, so TREAT IT LIKE THAT. I find certain corners of geek culture get WAY too attached to what's familiar to the point anything different will seem like a bad thing. It will either be a good game on its own or a bad game its own, and it's too early to say. You're looking for things to hate, and you will ONLY find things to hate. You only talk to other people who hate it, and you'll think EVERYONE hates it.

- "It's Heavenly Sword in a new skin?" Good! I liked Heavenly Sword. More specifically, I like Ninja Theory. I barely even pay attention to franchises as entities anymore. I don't care what it's called, what it's a sequel or reboot to, I care who the people making it are. Ninja Theory makes games I like. It's as simple as that.

- For the record, I only thought the demo was okay. I didn't think the action was as good as DMC1 and 3, but I think it can still come together into a good product, but probably a different kind of quality than the rest of the series. I will reserve judgement until I rent it.

If you feel they changed the game too much and you no longer like it, then speak with your dollar. And if all of you feel you can do better then make your own game instead of nagging in a forum. There are at least 50 of you who constantly complain about this game get, that's a small team of devs. Get up and make your own game or don't buy it. You're not entitled to anything because you didn't pay for the development cost, you didn't pay licensing fees, you didn't pay for each devs. salary, you didn't pay for anything yet. So if you don't like what they did DON'T BUY IT.

There are things I don't like about the game, and in a perfect world Capcom would have made the game while Ninja Theory handled the ascetics such as design changes and story. But that didn't happen so it's up to me to either pass, rent or buy the game if I enjoy it.

Can't agree with you more. If you look for only the negatives in things that's all you're going to see. This game has been bullied to death and back, and it's all completely unfair. Are there some things I don't like about the game? Yes, but I'm still going to play the game for myself to determine if it's worth taking another venture in the Ninja Theory's take on DMC. If anything they nailed the new look of the game (especially in cut scenes), and hopefully they'll nail the story as well.

Agreed. I thought the demo was okay. I wasn't impressed, but then again it wasn't a huge set piece for the game (besides the boss fight). That being said I only enjoyed DMC3. I went back and played the DMC Trilogy and DMC 1 is enjoyable, but doesn't stand the test of time, DMC 2 was mediocre at best, DMC 3 was a great game and continues to be, and DMC 4 was hit and miss for me because of Nero.

Because well, NT was tapped to REBOOT IT! YOU KNOW, RE-IMAGINE... CHANGE, THROW OUT SOME OF THE OLD, START FRESH AND NEW. because perhaps what was in the past was getting stale.

Let's be reasonable. Capcom has never been strong with their writing and narrative. We knew nothing about The character and the series didn't make the smoothest transition to this gen of consoles.

DMC4's Gameplay was great but design philosophy was hit and miss, spotty, It didn't perform as well as they hoped commercially and the fans complained the story sucked, and that they hated Nero, bitched that Dante's sections were redundant especially after getting use to Nero's play style,
so They decided that it was time to reboot.

If they made DMC 5, it would have been a hi-res version of DMC3... Obviously people didn't like that because that was essentially what DMC4 was. No updates to the formula.

At this point people are just grasping at straws... I find it funny how fans of NT are now bashing Heavenly Sword when they claimed it was awesome. I understand that the team is being lead by a mouthy prick, but HS wasn't terrible, and Enslaved's was more of an improvement over HS in story Telling. Something the Team has been known for, which is why they were tapped for Development in the first place, their design philosophy on world building, story and character development and interaction are their strong points.

If you played the DmC demo, and then went back to a previous ninja theory game, you'll realize that their combat engine has received an overhaul and is leaps and bounds better than anything seen in their previous games. HS is no where near as responsive as this and both games run on a 30fps locked system.

The bitching about the sex scene is crap, its a 30 second cinematic of a guy with a rape face, who comes to a realization that his lesser demon was just killed, it isn't gruesome, filthy or left to imagination its just tongue in cheek and apart of the flow of story, unlike the Simpson's game which replicated the raunchy nature of Rockstar's GTA. And let's not forget God of War or Mass Effect, the Sims, or Dragon Age or Oblivion, which tack it in as some interactive gimmick feature which really does nothing. People bitch about this in DmC because they need another reason to hate the game because Capcom rebooted something which was barely surviving the test of time with its gameplay mechanics, (Check how well DMC4 was received by the diehards). What's more, if you are complaining because this has a sex scene, damn near everything in the female version of DMC (Bayonnetta) was a solo sex porn as the protagonist practically got naked the more extreme your combos form and that was a little much if you ask, and if I remember correctly, people bashed Bayonnetta as "Devil May Boobs" even though the Originator of the Devil May Cry series made The game, what even more funny is that people are now claiming Bayonnetta is some savior of the genre when its story wasn't even that great. Its game play is great but nothing to write home about.

Again, it just seems that the 3 year old controversy over the DmC reboot has gone on for too long and at this point if you hated the game since them you should be steering clear from articles and media here or in the web if you weren't gonna get it in the first place. If you tried the demo and it reaffirmed your views then honestly it should be a no brainer, don't buy the game, and leave your energy for something else instead of vehemently returning to spew the same 1 sentence to a paragraph you've been saying since 2010 as to why you hate the game. Actually this Dante is basically the complete opposite of what Hideki Kamiya originally wanted for the character. One of the reasons Dante was even created was because Kamiya was tired of there being so many whiny, angsty "tough guy" heroes in Japanese games. He wanted to create a character who was fun, who wasn't angsty, and who -most of all- didn't need to swear or smoke in order to be "cool". Which is why the new Dante pisses a lot of long-time fans off...not only is he completely different to the original Dante, but the creators have intentionally gone against what Kamiya originally wanted for the character. It's basically a spit in the creator's eye.

I get that what's cool in Japan is completely different top what's cool in the West. But to me, simply making a character swear and smoke doesn't make them "cool". Personally I think new-Dante is an unlikeable dick, tbh. At least old Dante is likeable, even if he is kinda goofy and silly at times.

Dante's design in this game is far from the biggest problem with it. The story as a whole, a game that often dealt with Gothic locations, and evil cults is now suddenly a modern day setting about a rebel battling the government who is trying to control the world via debt and demon vomit turned soda, much like the Slurm episode of Futurama... What part of that story sounds like Devil May Cry?

The gameplay is far more brain dead then before as well, making jC's largely useless due to the fact that you CAN'T fall out of the air in combat, they got rid of jB's as a whole. And a inputs for counters, demon dodges and such give you a full, 30 frames to do them.

I was on Son of Sparda (Hard Mode) and did a full block of damage to the boss fight with 3 attacks.

My thoughts on the game's story:

The game’s story appears to be its weakest aspect. Devil May Cry is and always has been about gothic fantastical narrative, not social commentary. I’m not sure what Ninja Theory is trying to achieve with the game’s plot, but it confuses me into thinking that Dante is more a freedom fighter battling the evils of capitalism than he is a demon warrior saving the human race from ultimate destruction.

Within the first 10 minutes I’m hearing characters talking about taking down “bankers” and media personalities. That’s not directly the issue I have with the story, but there’s a pretty clear tone in shaping the elites as the ones that have brought evil to the world. It’s a great story in theory, but it’s not Devil May Cry, and it ticks me off. I’m just unsure about replacing the fantastical worlds we know from the other games, with an alternate reality that is quite clearly a mockery of contemporary society.

My question was in relation to the fact DANTE from Devil may cry is one of the sons of Sparda a demon who closed the gate between limbo and earth realm. and his blade rebellion is tied to his blood and very being, his firearms ebony and ivory are just 1911.45's with exstended slides. His attitude was that of a cocky kid in all truth, he loved pizza and strawberry sundays, and didnt persue demons unless they crossed him or was paid. He didnt smoke..not sure if he drank but I feel in the manga or comics he states he does not, or dislikes it.

DMC reboot dante is a crossbreed of angel and demon, his blade is closer to angelic and does not look like something SPARDA would of used, his guns look closer to desert eagles now but are made from the same stuff as his new blade. we dunno if he has a legit DEMON form (unless he grows white wings ) -lowers head..PLEASE NO.- My point is will this Dante even transform into a demon state. (doubt it since he is part angel.) he is more human based so far he does not show alot of the hyper skills ORIGINAL Dante showed (even DMC3 Dante) was already showing insane skills. He has been shown smoking, and clearly pursing the evil in the new DMC for personal reasons.

This is why I asked the question is this a reboot to the main series, or a alt version/universe. Cause the two Dantes are very diffrent, infact they could be viewed as twins or brothers ( random thought.) what is this Dante was infact a third brother of SPARDA and the youngest and eventually they change his name ...and nevermind. Just trying to give CAPCOM a way out of making this a complete reboot without killing the history, story, and original DANTE.

I'm a big DMC fan, the original is one of my favourite games of all time if I'm honest and whilst I am disappointed the reboot seems to stray from that part of the series quite a bit I am still very interested to see what it's like, I actually enjoyed the demo and will be giving the game a go.

You know what? If you don't like Tameem Antoniadas, fine...whatever, that's your perogative. I have no issue with the guy. Sure, he has a bit of an ego, but after going through Ninja Theory's catalog of games, I'm reminded that they've created some of my most cherished gaming memories in the last two generations. Kung Fu Chaos on the Xbox, Heavenly Sword on PS3, Enslaved...I loved them all on their own merits.

DMC, I've played this numerous times at multiple events over the last year. I never had an issue with his new look. I thought it strange that he resembled Tameem so closely, but whatever, I wasn't so stuck on that ivory-haired protagonist I've grown accustomed to over the last 4 entries...in fact, I was ready for change, and that's what Ninja Theory has delivered.

You can argue that the game is easy to pull off SSS ranks in a very simple manner, but the fact remains that at its core, this is DMC...it plays like DMC...it has DMC's humor, writing, and wit. Everything I loved about my all time favorite DMC (DMC3), is present and accounted for in this new imagining of the world I've grown up with.

I find it rather disheartening that "fans" can just spew out all of this nonsense with such fervent disregard to what had been a rather stale evolution in the series. I'd put DMC4 right at about the same level of abysmal that DMC2 earned...and that's not good. How can Capcom go from making the greatest entry in the series, DMC3, to such an abomination in one step? It's apparent they needed a fresh set of eyes, and as far as I'm concerned, Ninja Theory is up to the task.

I can't wait for the game, I've enjoyed the demos, and I'll be sitting back with a snarky smile as I read all of the nonsense from the rest of you "fans" who can't embrace a little change.

I'm done defending this game from "DMC fans". I've been a DMC fan since day one and I can't wait to play this game. The demo made me confident enough to pre-order on Amazon. You are all complaining about the gameplay, but this is the best action game since DMC3. It's quick, fun, and combo-driven. THAT is what DMC is all about. The story is pretty freaking cool, too. You all want a continuation of the original story, but Capcom screwed that up horribly with 4. I liked 4, but still. We won't get a good DMC from that storyline again because that team has moved on to other developers. Deal with it.

As a reboot/spinoff released parallel to another iteration of original series, I'd guess people wouldn't be so against this game. However, the very real risk of not getting the traditional 5, regardless of this game's success or failure, is probably fueling a lot of hatred. If it sells well, Capcom will think this new style is the way to go. If it bottoms out, they'll say no one wants Devil May Cry anymore. They aren't exactly good differentiating quality and sales numbers.

That said, I don't have a lot of history with the Devil May Cry series, but even I look at this game and kind of scratch my head of how they went from A to B.
I honestly don't know whether it is Capcom (who hasn't really made any good decisions lately) or Ninja Theory who is at fault.

I do kind of wonder how the developer who made the slightly flawed but heartfelt Heavenly Sword and the criminally under sold but excellent Enslaved (give us a sequel!) could go so off the rails with this. It almost makes me want to have faith in them and their great story telling abilities... but then I look at stuff like this.

The most sad thing about all this is actually all the damage control on this game. All the hate the DMC fans get. Damage control is good, but you have to respect that a lot of people actually DO get really upset/dissapointed by a change like this, it's nothing bad. Even long time fans can get upset. It's like with how Hitman: Absolution is overblown with sexual themes whether you actually see it or the moronic characters talk about it (sometimes in very disgusting ways). That's just one of the reasons why Hitman: Absolution was such a disappointment, but this scene was just tasteless. The whole time I'm watching this scene my reaction is pretty much summed up in, "What the hell am I watching?"

Seriously, this is just disgusting to watch and insulting to the original fanbase. What does this scene accomplish aside from grossing us out? Who honestly thought at Ninja Theory, "Hey! This sequence needs a demon sex scene between an obese old man and an ugly sex doll!"

Why don't these developers and publishers realize that sex scenes need to be done in a certain way so that it helps the narrative? It takes away from the experience rather than add to it.
