Why Ubisoft’s Two Big Holiday Games Are Better On PC (Hint: It’s Not Uplay)

The last couple of weeks have given us two of the biggest games of the fall, both from Ubisoft. Assassin's Creed III continues the historically focused swashbuckling adventure series, and Far Cry 3 lets players loose on a violent South Pacific island paradise.

Both games feature the number "3" and both games have a second word that begins with "Cr." Both are very ambitious, open-world games that push the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to their limits. And as a result, both games shine brightest on PC.

ProjectVulcan4582d ago (Edited 4582d ago )

Problem with far cry 3 on consoles is it just runs choppy and the edges seem rough. Once you crack it open on a good PC the refinement and smoothness and seamlessness of the game massively enhances the open world experience.

It's a difficult feeling to explain to a console only gamer.

Like the difference between a cheap n cheerful rough whiskey and a long matured refined smooth malt. Yes they are both are alcoholic and essentially the same thing.

But one is sooooooooo much tastier and enjoyable

Mocat4581d ago (Edited 4581d ago )

Same goes for PC screen tearing frame drops random events dont get me started i have it on pc and if it wasnt so cheap i prob wouldev got it for xbox. and dont forget that this is a console port this game was not made for PC just look at the GUI.

ProjectVulcan4581d ago

Screen tearing on PC? So you never heard of vsync?

Framedrops? So you never heard of getting your settings right?

Are you entirely sure you have it on PC and haven't mistakenly pretended you actually have a gaming PC and mistakenly lied in this reply because no genuine PC gamer in the history of PC gaming doesn't know how to turn on vsync in game settings.....

Mocat4581d ago (Edited 4581d ago )

so i should turn on Vsync and lose FR yea no i dont think so.Dont believe me go look in the PC forum of ubisoft FC3, and i dont really care what you think about my rig.

ProjectVulcan4581d ago (Edited 4581d ago )

So you are complaining that your PC isn't very powerful. Really thats it surely? Whether you can turn vsync on or not depends on how good your machine is. But it doesn't have to be very good to have it on, it'll surely be the very first thing you have on. I would sacrifice another setting if it meant getting vsync. Its a no brainer.

Medium settings here looks like consoles.

Far Cry 3 is demanding when everything is turned on for sure, but at lower settings/resolutions that still comfortably outstrip the consoles it is not much problem for weak hardware. You may need the latest drivers that have optimisations. Again, fairly obvious stuff.

A fairly slow dated system with like an 8800GTX (only 5 years old, and massively slower than a modest and also now aging Radeon 5770) should manage medium and 16x9 rez 30+FPS. Which I'll remind you is still over 60 percent more than what PS3/360 are doing on this game......as they wobble, judder and tear along scraping a 25 frame average!

kevnb4582d ago

they are, but I'm still disappointed in assassins creed 3s performance. I know its pretty woeful on consoles as well, but I expected more...

Plagasx4582d ago

Yea, they really need to patch the game for better fps especially in the Boston area...

AKS4582d ago

Nvidia's latest beta drivers improve performance in those games quite a bit, and SLI with Assassin's Creed III has been working for me since I downloaded them. It's nice to have both cards working at a reasonable amount (and more importantly, reasonable temps) instead of one heating up and the other remaining at idle.

I'm not sure about AMD, as I don't have an AMD card currently (swapped GTX 670s for 6950s last time I upgraded my GPUs). I think I read an update is coming soon. Hopefully it will get an improvement like Just Cause 2. How the hell did 12.11 Beta improve Just Cause 2 by 90% with a single driver update?! LOL. That's better than most games would get from CF with a second card.

rainkore4582d ago

I really feel that everything was rushed or just poorly executed as far as gameplay goes. The game is beautiful but to the culmination of such a great story you figured Ubisoft would have attempted to make a flawless game.

Allsystemgamer4582d ago

Yea. AC 3 plays aweful. Fun game but runs bad.

FC3 runs at 40fps max on 1080p on my ancient 6970 2gb so I'm happy about that

rainkore4582d ago

Talking about FarCry 3 it is amazing! 60fps on a core i7 3770/16 gb ram/ Nvidia GTX 560ti.

Gameplay is so amazing. I am doing a full play through right now. OMG it is so good! I cannot say that enough. it is close to perfect.

OcelotRigz4582d ago

Built my first gaming pc recently and ive been loving the experience so far, but nothing has blown me away yet like Far Cry 3, i find it hard to play the game because i just spend most of my time looking around and admiring how beautiful this game looks, especially at sunrise.
Looks aside, its a great game and im really enjoying it so far.
Not interested in AC3.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4582d ago (Edited 4582d ago )

To bad crysis 3 won't be as huge as farcry 3 but still will look amazing.

PC version of farcry 3 looks like gods day dream.

Bathyj4582d ago

Man I hate Uplay.

Do I really have to tell them EVERY time I'm not interested. Take the hint.

No means NO.

BushLitter4582d ago

I have to disagree, ACIII was my first encounter with Uplay, and I like it way more than Steam. Every steam title I have ever purchased takes forever to update after I have first installed it, and the update sizes are ridiculous, exceeding 5 gigs at times.

With both AC and FC3 it was a relatively simple process, no bull****.

DudeJets4581d ago

Are you on any form of drugs?
Just asking because well you know...

If your steam is updating slowly there's a problem check your settings.

Steam has one of the fastest d2d networks available.

Why Assassin's Creed 2 and 3 Had the Best Writing the Series Has Ever Seen

IGN - Assassin's Creed's focus on character-driven storytelling has been buried by its RPG sandbox features, and the series is weaker for it.

RaidenBlack97d ago

A rare W opinion piece from IGN.
IMO, Ubisoft needs to setup two primary AC dev teams. 1 would focus on and release character-driven OG-style AC games for OG fans and the other would continue the current RPG-ified AC style for current fans.
Release by them Bi-annually and alternatively. There'd less fatigue and a boost to quality.

ZeekQuattro97d ago

I definitely appreciate 3 more after playing it again in recent years along with the Liberation game. Back when 3 was new I was still riding high on AC2 and Brotherhood so when I played 3 I felt a bit let down. Even the ship battles grew on me.

-Foxtrot97d ago

AC2 - Yes

AC3 - Urm...I don't know

I feel they kind of dropped the ball with AC3 and with the way the story went it just didn't make sense to me at all. I felt it would have made more sense lore wise if they had it so the Red Coats were mostly Assassins and the Templars were mostly the Colonists who wanted this "new world" as a fresh start for their operations, to build a country up they'd have full control of from the start so they manufacture the war as something else while really it's just a front for the Templars vs Assassins.

It just meant that since the Red coats lose the war it explains how the Templars have gained full control of future America and how the Assassins have slowly died out by then. This entire event would have been the turning point of how things went to s**t for the Assassins and how there's not many of them left in the present.

Haythem was a lot more interesting than Connor and he should have been the main Assassin of AC3.

lucasnooker97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

I thought AC2 was the greatest of the series and it is but replaying it recently, I stared to see more flaws in the game. Basically every single mission is an assassination besides a few tailing missions lol. Still, the implementation of all the new mechanics were great. The smoke bombs, disarming guards, story, hidden tombs, swimming, flying machine, multiple locations, etc. it definitely felt a bit more special to me at the time of release though

isarai96d ago

Dunno about 3, the 1st act was cool, then i couldn't tell you what happens after that. But 2 was so good! The entire acts 1-3 were al memorable, whereas i really couldn't even tell you what happens in any other AC game

Far Cry Has Become A Shadow Of Its Former Self

Following a series of repetitive games, a formulaic approach, and a disappointing last entry, the Far Cry series has been run into the ground.

The trouble with most criticisms of this franchise is that they insist Far Cry 3 was the best game, but the things they claim to hate about the franchise are all the elements that 3 introduced.

Deeeeznuuuts332d ago

Couldn't agree with you more! I've always thought that, my personal favourite is two, the whole atmosphere, mystery, adrenaline, my vehicle steaming up because I've crashed too many times trying to escape and then getting in a shootout, having to pull a bullet out my arm while fire rages and bullets fly, can't beat it

JEECE332d ago

Yep, 2 is my favorite by far as well, and one of my favorite singleplayer games of all time. It was probably one of the last games Ubisoft made before they started homogenizing their franchises to be open world collect-a-thons with unnecessary RPG mechanics tacked on. I enjoyed 3 for what it was, but it was clearly an attempt to make the franchise appeal to a mass audience (which, in fairness, was successful).

LucasRuinedChildhood332d ago

That's not the issue. If Far Cry 3 never existed and they just made another 5 or 6 games that were increasingly generic copies of Far Cry 2 instead, would that make FC2 the real problem?

No. It's the lack of creativity and effort that followed that's the real issue.

And there are things that are genuinely different about FC3. Simple example - the story was easily the best. Best main villain by far too but it also has strong themes and wasn't afraid to explore controversial topics. The sequels are much blander.

Comparing the fun and creativity of Blood Dragon to the DLC in the sequels ... also says a lot about how Ubisoft fell off.

-Foxtrot332d ago

Yeah like even Far Cry 4 was decent, not as great as FC3 but they still gave us an interesting story, setting and villain. Pagan Min's random calls to Ajay were pretty funny.

They just got lazier and lazier, pumping them out while making it a little more streamlined each time. I mean Jesus, they gave us a silent protagonist with FC5 which really hurt the main story and are obsessed with pleasing everyone by trying to do two characters, male and female rather than just settling on one to tell the best story they can.

neutralgamer1992332d ago

I started FC6 and yes the game works fine but I just wssnt Fun. Do many Ubi games are huge playgrounds but feel empty and doesn't give the feeling of a world which is lived in

JEECE331d ago

I have found that the more recent FC games work better as what I call "background games." Basically what I mean is it's nice to have an active save in one of them going for those times you have 45 minutes to play games and just want to have fun and don't want to get bogged down playing a game online or starting a new game and spending all your time into an annoying tutorial. Like I haven't touched FC4 in years but I know if I had 30 minutes to an hour to play I could hop in and easily be back in the swing of things and attack an outpost and have a good time.

I think a lot of people use big RPGs like Skyrim or Cyberpunk in a similar way.

isarai332d ago

Yes because FC3 executed those aspects better. Every game since FC3 has just been Frankensteined off the bones of FC3 with half the effort.

Michiel1989332d ago

you could say it's a far cry from what it was

wesnytsfs332d ago

Ubisoft gets a lot of hate for their content filling of maps. Personally I enjoy the mechanic when i play an open world game I like revealing hte entire map and doing all the side mission stuff before i go into main missions. Far Cry and the RPG AC maps where a joy to play.

RaidenBlack332d ago

Far Cry 2 was soo unique ... it was ahead of its time and is often misunderstood (thank you Clint Hocking, can't wait for his next game Assassins Creed Hexe)
(yes, FC2 was a departure from from FC1, so in strictest sense, Crysis 1 & 3 are the truer successors)

JEECE332d ago

Yep. Unfortunately there has been so little since then that has scratched the same itch. Really the closest thing has been BOTW, which uses a lot of similar systems (though ironically FC2 came out before Ubisoft put the Assassin's Creed towers in Far Cry, while BOTW had Ubi towers). Obviously it isn't a shooter though. I keep hoping that that some indie dev will put an FC2-esque game out on Steam, but so far I've been left wanting.

Sircolby45332d ago

I actually enjoyed Far Cry 5 and New Dawn. Far Cry 6 was a joke. It was a step backwards in every way. That was probably the worst Far Cry I have ever played.

Why Far Cry 3 Was The Best Of The Franchise?

Far Cry 3, an open-world masterpiece that redefined the series. Gameplay and storyline makes it a timeless classic that still inspires today.

It's gotta be Far Cry 2 for me, the feeling of that game I'm still yet to find again, just everything about it, I'd kill for a remaster, I'd even be happy with just a bump in resolution and frame rate, occasionally go back to it, think I'm gunna have to do just that now 😂

porkChop365d ago

A remaster of Far Cry 2 would be amazing, especially with the mods that fixed the broken stealth system and the dumb checkpoint respawns. Include those fixes and it would be a huge upgrade over the original.

JEECE365d ago

Enemies respawn in Far Cry 2? Terrible! It's a broken system! Make me a one-man army who can inexplicably hold an entire region!

Enemies respawn in Dark Souls and Zelda? Brilliant! So much more hardcore! Glad the devs took risks!

porkChop365d ago

The problem isn't them respawning. It's that they respawned after just 5 minutes. Like you'd still be in the area looking for diamonds, loot, exploring, etc, and the enemies would just respawn with you there.
