BBC News: Red ring of death returns at GDC 08

Microsoft wants consumers to believe that its problems with the Xbox 360 console in terms of hardware failure are over.

But wandering through the Game Developers Conference halls and it's clear that the problem persists.

On Microsoft's own stand at the show one of the demo consoles has a rather familiar problem - the red ring of death. There's no way of knowing if this particular console was manufactured before or after Microsoft identified the problems with the machines.

that is pretty humiliating indeed. The good news is it didnt happen during the presentation with an actual 360 so hardly anyone will notice. Nothing msoft can do now though they already gave out 3yr warranties all they can do is do their best to make sure future consoles are not inflicted with the same fault. That being said i have one of the older 360's 2 yrs now still standing but i am like ridiculously careful with it extremely paranoid the thing will die. I dnt use it for anything else but games and i always put it off and unplug it when i am done. However if msoft cant even take care of their own console what chance do i have.

because ive had mine sinse launch and never had a problem, it hardly gets hot at all and ive never had a failure, yet my friends one gets quite hot, his is newer then mine and has been repaired once although it never got the rrod ti just started locking up, another of my friends did get the rrod and his didnt last a year, but he did play his for 12 hour straight constantly, i play mine for 2 to 5 hours tops in a session, and i dont play it every day but ive still had no issues, i bought my mum a 360 and its now 14mths old, shes had no issues yet either
i dont understand how mine could outlast all my friends, maybe im lucky but if they were all made the same way back then then wouldnt they all be %100 faulty?

It probably is just not getting well ventilation..but what about the other consoles..why are they working fine? RRoD is horrible. This on the other hand is not good for MS. Is due to the wide spread issues MS had with the console failure something like this gets totally jumped on by the press.

But reality is there are a couple of things that can cause that ring besides the console completely failing as I recall...and are easily fixed. But...because they had such a big problem nobody would (myself included) give that a second thought and will just assume its one of the 'bad' consoles.

if u want to see every system fail come to gamecrazy that i work at. our display wii has been sent in 14 times since launch. it always kicks the bucket in the middle of a demo for a customer. the ps3 we had fryed. my store smelled like butt cheecks for days. burnt chips isnt appealing. our 360 has died 3 times too. but that our own fault becuase our displays r on everyday for at least 13 hours. every console has failed, maynot be omg microsoft failure but electronics all fail. every last one of them becuase they r designed too.

I have never heard of a PS3 "frying". I really don't think that's possible. Unless, like, the core/harddrive f'd up.

My friend's PS3's Blu-ray gave out after like 6 months.
Sent in. Got it back within a 2 weeks.

i've really been thinking about getting another 360 just so i can have the best of both worlds. i had one already thats modded but i gave it away to my lil cousin and i don't have the heart to take it back after a year.

but i refuse to get another 360 until they fix these problems completely. they've been dragging their feet on this sh!t for way too long. i already had enough issues with the system the first time around and i don't have time to put up with it again.

This is pretty sad. They gave me a free month of XBL gold last time I sent mine in yet charged me $99 for replacement. Since disc scratching 360's where not covered in the extended RRoD warranty....

Oh that's harsh, mine will scratch a disc if I play it for a few hours straight. I heard grinding in the drive when I was playing Mass Effect and opened it up to circular scratches on the disc. They buffed out easily though so I guess I'm alright for now. ..

a bit off topic but not. my friends 360 died and it wasnt a RRoD and they said it wasnt covered under the warranty. and said i would have to pay. i took none of it and complained and the guy said he'l speak to his finance department. he then said they'l make an "exception" and fix it for free. my bet is if you really complain there more than willing to replace/fix for free

Well, since the demo units at GDC RROD'ed then I'm going to go ahead and assume that they never fixed the real issues.

So that would mean that yes, every XBOX 360 out there still has a chance of failing. And apparently the RROD is still here to stay.

I sent in my older 360 today because of RROD, I'll never buy a PS3 MSFT's lineup and platform/service is the only thing I wan't from the gaming industry meaning I wouldn't be a gamer if there wern't a Xbox. PS2 owners delt with it so can I.

After seeing what some of my friends were doing with PS2 I will gladly appreciate my warrenty.

My friends were lucky we Xbox owners ignored PS2 owners problems I remember my pals hanging, leaning, fliping them around and taking them apart doing hair brained things to them, almost seemed like they were on Meth. having to do all that because no one would fix them. I'm fine for now.

Its a Japanese centric console, its not in my taste is all, don't like the games and don't wan't to own a console thats always playing catch up in innovation and ideas. Who's to say PS3 won't start failing?, its only been a year.

I don't like PS3's sloppy Software side of the console seems rushed like the 360's hardware. PS3 seems to have a pretty solid Hardware side which os more than I can say about the seemingly incomplete software side(not games, system software capabilitits).

The reason why some of the 360s have not shown rrod I because the owner of the 360 may not be a hardcore gamer and they may only play there 360 for 2 hours a day not 10+ hours a day like hardcore gamers there for a hardcore gamer will burn out there consoles quicker.

I'd say piece-meal or incomplete, but certainly NOT sloppy. The PSN store is inelegant, but not sloppy. Sloppy implies it breaks or has confusing, inconsistent, pointless design choices. The PSN store is sparce, not sloppy. The XMB interface is certainly slick, tight and very comfortable.

My assessment would be they got the basics the way they wanted it, and are slow rolling out the rest.

Feel free to disagree, but my limited time with the 360 reminds me why I don't by Microsoft products... art design by Academy of Art students (amateurishly flashy (read: ghetto)).

Power of Green: If it weren't for Sony Microsoft wouldn't be in the games industry. Sony prooved that a company that doesn't have in house game development could succeed in the industry and over the 13 years they have developed the good 1st party. And PS3 won't have a issue as huge as the RRoD because there are people who run folding@home, game, watch movies 24/7 on the PS3. PS3 and Wii are both systems that can be left on 24/7 and the same cannot be said for the 360 unless you don't care if it breaks.

If I remember correctly, in year 1 of XBOX 360, it had nothing that contended with the likes of Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance... For a first year out in the market, I do think the Playstation 3 fared as well as it could at its price point, you have to remember that it launched at $599 and stayed at that level for quite a while.

And for a company that's pretty new to the Operating Systems scene (Sony with the XMB) I think they are doing pretty well and continuing to update and support their software/hardware compatibility and functionality. As for Microsoft, well, we all know they've been in the Operating Systems business for well over 25 years and it shows (even on the reliability side on things). What did you expect? Sony to come blowing out of the gates (pardon the pun) with an all-featured Operating System? They'll be working little by little adding functionality as they go on.

They have all the time in the world, the hardware won't die on them.

@Mike - yeah you have some good points but then Again, everybody seem to forget, Sony went through it's own Hardware issues, It wasn't like BAM!! the PS3 came out of nowhere..with a super low defect rate. Sony's issues didn't look so bad when you go on to sell over 100 million Units.

Plus what has been tougher MS coming into this industry with nintendo and Sony at the helms or When Sony took over and all the Devs left nintendo? I agree it has been a big hill to climb for MS, and it ha snot been all perfect. Anyhow that's another topic.

I don't think the kinks will ever be worked out. The whole console is of poor design the MOBO,heatsinks,DVD-DRIVE,cooli ng fans,Disc-tray and the solder use to attach diodes & connections and the plastic used to secure the GPU and CPU and also the GPU is located in a bad spot right below the DVD-Drive keeping more heat around it the solder they use is the cheapest kind that will melt at one uniform temp. Disc errors,disc scratching and lock ups on certain games and downloads and since XMAS major XBOX-LIVE issues and guess what you pay for that. There will be no recall thats what the 3yr warranty for the RROD was for to prevent a recall and class action lawsuits.

LOL even the position of RROD works right adjusting to the angle or the way the console stands but not the hardware. Assuming RROD auto adjust like player status. The Pic used with this thread on the front page is not the way Hardware failure RROD looks like.

Remember RR means more than hardware failure although I know this is more than likely hardware failure due to the casing, the position of the lit segments mean different things ranging from being too warm to hardware failure, if the RROD auto adjust then its most than likey failure based from this video- the RROD is in the right possition vs the fake pic of the RROD on the home page on this thread which is fake.

No matter how bad the news is for 360, you try to find something negative about Sony. You bring the PS2 disc read problems, but yet forget to mention that most of those PS2 were like 3 years old. How many PS2 were affected? 500,000 units out of 120 million, I think I can live with that. The 360 has 17 million units sold and 33 percent failure rate thats around 5 million consoles. In my life time of playing PS2 I have been the only one of my freinds to get the disc error. Since the 360 came out I have had at least 10 friends that got RROD. Is there a problem? I had a 360 but I sold it because I felt the PS3 was the way to go. The only game that I want from 360 is GEARS, and that's the reason I upgraded my xbox 1 to 360 but after six months of playing gears it gets boring. There is no game on 360 library that I consider a system seller at the moment and that goes for the PS3, but at least the PS3 has features that I enjoyed since I bought without paying a monthly subscription.

Very true, the sad part of it all is they keep bringing up the PS2 and its disk read errors, but even if you combined the failures with the PS1, PS2, and the PS3 together, they would still be less than the failure rate for the 360.

The way I see it, if they are too stubborn to see the writing on the wall, then so be it, those of us that own both systems will not convince them otherwise.

These are almost certainly launch consoles, in the PR/Conference-staff stock and taken from show to show since Day One.

*NEW* Consoles have had many many changes to solve the heat issues... but that doesnt mean this machine was one of them. It also doesnt mean that all the heat-issue machines will instantly disappear.

Being that this is a conference, and there are almost always voltage issues in situations like this, it could have been a low voltage supply to the PowerSupply that causes those that warning message.

I just got a RROD on my second console a few days ago. I don't think it's anything to do with overheating since me and my mates were playing "Scene it" and had been doing so for about ten minutes before it crashed out. This is also after months and months of successful Halo 3 playtime.

I love my 360, but it's flawed design is a joke.

actually a PS3 probably would fail without a adequate air supply in the same situation.

Sony has many rules for placement to avoid overheating.
4" clearance all sides
Open front and back
no carpet
clean vents - vaccuum them out at least once a month
operating temp zone ends at 95F
etc

Just because it is unlikely to fail does not mean it won't if you don't follow proper placement rules.
PS3s fail as well - but not generally for random causes
(Blu-ray Diode Failure -- attributed to smoking (nearly 90% fatal) or to much dust(10%) in same building as PS3)
(MB Failure -- bad chip... manufacturing error or flaw)

The Xbox360 does suffer from a design flaw in the Hardware that the PS3 does not, but both systems have awe inspiring games and while I tend more toward the PS3 side since they carry many games I like, I know and have friends that lean the other way.

Ive had 3 xbox360s and none of them have broke down. My 60gb ps3 has frozen once on motorstorm. A friend of mine had 3 ps3 60gb overheat. You have to put your xbox so that it gets enough air(ventilation) That i think is the main problem and do not place it horizontal, it could destroy your dvd`s.

They didnt rush my friend. The even put the PS3 launch on ice to work out some BR kinks. The PS3 was crafted with care and well thought out.

my roomate's 360 died on him (not Red Ring related), and he bought a new one. he eventually fixed his old one, and sold me the new one (or so he says...). another friend of mine had his die on him too (due to a Red Ring).

the PS3, on the other hand, is built like a frigging *TANK. yes, it has meltdowns (i think? i mean, does it? anybody know? have they actually *SEEN one, or is it all anecdotal evidence).

the point i'm trying to make, is that this type of stuff shouldn't happen to Microsoft at a press conference. and yes, much like how the media blew out of proportion that PS3 back at E3 2006 that died (remember, that was *PRIOR to launch, not two, going into *THREE years into the consoles lifecycle), they are blowing this MS debacle out of proportion.

The red ring of death is actually when the 1st quadrant of the circle appears green. That's when the xbox is horizontal, not vertical. This video clearly shows a simple overheat error, which lights up the 4th quadrant in green and the others in red. It's simple to fix this error by simply disconnecting the unit, allowing it to cool, then reconnecting it. This error probably occurred due to the glass enclosure that's keeping it from properly venting.
