All Interactive Entertainment (AIE) has today launched the MAG II Gun Controller in theUK. Compatible with all first-person shooter (FPS) videogames on PlayStation 3 and PC, the MAG II Gun Controller is a precision gaming device designed with action-packed, high-octane videogames in mind.
Should MAG 2 be developed for the PS4 after all its servers were uncermoniously shut down last year?
I've been trying to chase that MAG high for years that's my first platinum and easily one of if not my first favorite online experience I ever had. I'm playing PlanetSide as I type this.
It have to be free to play in today's market not enough people will buy it. I deff would.
Hope they wouldn't cater to their fav faction so much S.V.E.R.
Raven nevaR give up...
Oh yea everyone want SOCOM, check out H-Hour, spiritual successor and made by Monday of the original team from SOCOM 2 was a kick starter project.
"I wanna see both MAG and Socom"
This all day.
Planetside 2 is pretty epic, though it definitely has rough edges. Still the best MAG substitute right now though imo.
Unfortunately Sony shut down Zipper Interactive, who were the studio that made MAG and SOCOM. It was around the time they shut down Studio Liverpool as well, who made the excellent Wipeout HD for PS3. Two great studios gone, I miss them a lot. I wish Sony hadn't abandoned LightBox Interactive either (Warhawk & Starhawk devs) because a new game from them would have been great as well.
I think Sony made some really poor choices when it came to which studios to shut down and let go of last console generation. They were responsible for a good chunk of the exclusive lineup that made the PS3 so great.
It isn't a one or the other proposition, especially with their diverse natures. But it has to be a true SOCOM, not the gameplay we saw in S4.
MAG had some really great ideas. Some executed well and some not. I would like to see a 2nd one. With everything learned from the 1st one and having done things never before attempted, Sony could really deliver something unique.
MAG is #2 on my list of top-notch shooters last gen, in terms of the amount of fun and the "high" I got from playing them. In this order, Bad Company 2, MAG, and Cod4. Mostly because when Cod4 was first released, I was in sophomore year of HS lol. But by far BC2 and MAG were the most amazing experiences I've ever had with shooters, besides skulltag with some old coding buddies.
MAG took a little bit of time to learn and really appreciate, and I was close to quitting on it several times, I sold it once, but eventually bought it again. When I finally got a handle on the feel of the controls/movement, and understanding tactics, I grinded on that game for months lol. I'm actually having some crazy nostalgia right now from seeing this article.
I dream of a MAG 2 for ps4. Please Sony!!!!
Of course yes. And find the old zipper team give them a raise and bring them back together. I'm still upset they shut down. I bought all there games even unit 13, and loved them all. Socom 4 is the worst game they made, I had fun with it still tho.
@SolidDuck,
Two underrated games I love are SOCOM Tactical Strike and Unit 13. Coop in Unit 13 was a great deal of fun but often overlooked
http://awesomescreenshot.co... ;)
Yes I would love MAG 2 they could do so much more now with the hardware of the PS4.
Planetside 2 reminds me of MAG a lot.
But I'd rather have Socom, sadly sony fired them all after Socom 4 BOMB, I know that the Socom vets are the reason for no Socom 5 because we didn't support Socom 4, but if we did support it then Socom 5 would have been made from Socom 4 foundation and not Socom 3, 2 and 1. Even Confrontation was better than Socom 4 and we all hated Confrontation hahahaha.
Massive battles in MAG is much more entertaining. I bet they'll revive Socom with cinematic scenes.
Exactly!!! That was something that, up until then, the consoles had NO representation of...being in a full-scale war. There was nothing quite like it. That feeling of small group tactics creating advantages for a massive, strategic surge on an objective was unheard of (at least on consoles) at the time. MAG was just ahead of it's time and GREAT for what it was doing and WHERE it was doing it. Although many downplayed it. It was pretty sophisticated and impressive from a technical perspective. IMO, it was as much of a technical feat as GoW III or even TLoU...just in a different way.
I think of MAG as being better than Planetside 2. Planetside 2 has a huge learning curve and the combat isn't as fun as it is in MAG.
MAG wouldn't be the same without Zipper.. H-hour has potential to be a true socom game if they can get more funding/bigger team but thats far off from coming to ps4:(
That's a good thing. Mag was technically impressive due to the amount of people on at once, but looked average and was rather boring overall.
I would love MAG2. I hope they would give us more Domination Maps. they added maps and modes nobody really liked it. this might be why MAG die out.. Domination is when MAG shined.
The problem I had was winning meant very little apart from tiny xp boosts.
Planetside 2 is just super hard to get into if you come in fresh, with little to no information.
A MAG2 would be awesome if they added PS2 elements where territory gets taken over, where winning gets you more xp that you can use to buy vehicles etc, and last but not least, they make more varied, detailed and dynamic maps.
Only if they change the button layout. the layout for mag was horrible. Couldn't get into it because of it
I really never liked MAG, if they did make a second then all i have to do is not buy it so it doesn't really bother me.
I really never understood why people come into an article about something JUST to say they don't like it. All they have to do is not come into the article.
Edit: Stop stalking me. Go away. The last thing you can do is call anybody a hypocrite.
this game was a great idea but the developer blows.
i am officially convinced that Zipper Interactive made Socom1 and 2 by mistake. they made a ton of other games after that were just terrible.
MAG was decent, terrible execution. they kept bragging about 256 Players but we never saw 128v128. everyone was sectioned off and couldnt find each other. it was kind of false advertising. that along with something that looked like 480p made the visuals disgusting to look at.
Thankfully Zipper is DEAD they ruined the Socom Series and i will never forgive them for it. they ruined my teen years
You are pretty far off... There was a full battle pretty much every domination match. After all of the outside objectives were captured both teams would meet in the middle and it was complete chaos! You probably just played for those Valor chumps, heh.
Plus, I'm sure that Zipper aren't responsible for ruining your teenage years.
I wouldn't trust Sony with MAG 2. I got hoodwinked into buying MAG and Sony prematurely shot down the server. :(
So you didn't play it much during the 4 years that you had a chance to play the game?
If you bought the game shortly before they shut down the server you could have bought the game much sooner.
?????? That is some spin.,in other words you are telling me a game that is online only and it is acceptable for Sony to shut out those people that pay their hard earn money for the game in the later stage and it is their fault that without warning, the game just became a coaster?
And add to that, barely a year...Sony shut down the MLB 14 server. I MEAN are you going to tell those folks they should buy MLB 14 at launch or just get MLB 15 to play online and and Sony did the right thing as well?
Imagine Titanfall would have pull that stunt, MS and EA would be be thrown into the fire pit and shred to pieces to no end. Apologists are always defending something that they know is not right, but does it anyways..just because. :/ smh
Rookie from what I've seen you post negative comments on a lot of Playstation articles. Just an observation.
MAG servers were open for a long long time. I know, I actually played it every day with my friends.
I wouldn't call supporting for 3 years (even a year after the devs were shut down) on an online-only, "cult-hit" title getting "hoodwinked". I don't know if Zipper (the devs) handled the servers internally or if Sony did. But, either way, axing Zipper probably had something to do with the MAG server closings.
As for MLB, it was a known thing that support for it's servers was usually on a cycle of about 2 years. However, the MLB 14 version didn't last as long. That DID suck. The silver lining, however, was that is was supposed to be in order to move to better coded/supported servers for the new game. Sony took plenty of flak for it (as much as they could for a sports title that is). That being said, it isn't like this is a trend for Sony (not supporting titles long term).
You have the right to feel...however. But, I just don't see it as a Sony trend and something that should cause alarm and concern.
Fair enough. I held off buying MLB 15 this year and see how everything went first as far as supporting the server for more than a year. If Sony pull the same stunt again, I am done with baseball. A minimum of 2 years should be the norm for sports game in regard to server support.
I agree that what they did with MLB was acceptable.
But I disagree with Rookie accusing Sony of scamming people with MAG by maintaining the servers online for 4 years.
Not my fault you didn't do your research. Next time look up when the game came out and when they took the servers offline. Four years was plently of time for the title.
Pretty funny how your drag MLB into this when its about MAG.
Either this or socom. Come on sony you kept the last guardian alive due to fan demand now do socom at least gamers have been asking for years
Why revive a "meh" game when the developers resources could be used on something better.
Well, because MAG was a brand new IP and had a HUGE amount of promise. Being able to refine things on a second iteration could have brought that "meh" game to a great game. Uncharted was once considered a "meh" game. The original Killzone and Halo could be considered "meh" compared to their later iterations. IP's evolve with each new game. There's no reason to assume that MAG couldn't have also. Plus, one man's "meh" is another man's awesome.
Heh...anybody remember running around with the SVER sub machinegun (with really big clip) taking out snipers across the map. Game was a rough diamond :)
Being honest it's basically just Planetside 2. Zipper obviously won't be making it, that's why.
MAG was my favorite team based shooter. It was masterfully crafted and the size of the battles were just epic. It made me feel so tiny , but at the same time, important in completing my mission given. Just an epic game and I would love to see a second.
With current gen technology I think MAG has the potential to be much more successful this time around than it was with it's predecessor.
Oddly enough I think widespread warfare in the FPS genre is starting to become more widely accepted now than it was back in MAG's time.
The formula is more easily understood now and people seem more interested in trying new things as opposed to the old tired formulas that some FPS genres have beaten to death.
Yes I would love if Sony made an MAG 2. The concept was great and I hope we get too see their full dream. I remember the beta they ran after the game release and it seems like the improve the graphics but those settings was never release for the public...
Domo was the best team focus mode I have every played. Defending your bunker against waves of enemy gave me a "high".
Do anyone remember the rumor that MAG once was running 512 players? Because the footage they showed back-stage looked a lot more bigger and chaotic.
Sure. Would nice to have MAG2. Firstly though. Would much rather see a SOCOM1 or SOCOM 2 remaster for the PS4. Less money, time, and effot starting from scratch. A SOCOM remaster would be ideal for fans and profits.
Eskimo Press: "One of the most memorable first person shooter games from the last generation was MAG. It is a game where you heavily relied on communication with your team mates (all 128 of them, sometimes), and had to work cooperatively to complete objectives, and when people did this MAG was quite easily the best first-person shooter game available across all platforms (PC included). Could you imagine just how awesome a PS4 version of MAG would be?"
Hell yes. Warhawk. Bring back Warhawk and MAG. They can leave Starhawk to rot, though. :)
Why do people hate Starhawk? That game is incredible. I thought it was just as good as, if not better than, Warhawk.
Starhawk had a lot of faults like no buildings already on the map, poor level design, had health regeneration which made shoot outs pointless, weapons not widely available on the map, vehicles not widely available on the map, Jeep or whatever they called it being way too large. The knife had all the skill taken out due it no longer being a real weapon. Basically it was noobed or made COD friendly.
It had nothing on Warhawk as it became more of a game of luck rather than skill.
On top of that Warhawk was just crazy fun where there were like a million ways to die or take down the opposition.
Warhawk was so crazy you could hide bombs in the clouds! The clouds man.
Warhawk was so crazy you could snipe from one side of the map to the other (on some maps) and there was even a trophy for it.
Warhawk was so crazy you could drive your jeep right into the enemy base strapped with a ton of bombs and jump out the side of it as it crashes and explodes into the enemy.
Warhawk was so crazy you could hold the knife and disappear from the map, allowing stealth kills right inside their base.
Warhawk was so crazy you could belt jeeps high up into the air by flying your hawk into them.
Warhawk was so crazy you could roll vehicles, plant mines under them and correct them back up so nobody would be any the wiser when hopping in.
Warhawk was so crazy you could snipe the pilot out of a hawk mid-flight.
Warhawk was so crazy you could stab the driver of a jeep as he drove by.
Feel free to add your own but Warhawk was crazy fun.
Starhawk was just another shooter.
Yes perhaps MAG was a bit ahead of it`s time on PS3 maybe it would work now on PS4 ? .
MAG was ahead of it's time. (parachuting in will return)
Here lies
Zipper Interactive
Killed by Dooty
1996-2012
RIP Zipper
Both games sold well, and were easily my favorite online games last generation.
Alot of exclusives Sony tried and failed with last gen would probably do pretty well on PS4
Especially SOCOM !
MAG was my favorite online-shooter last gen and socom2 is my alltime fav.. Head over to H-Hour website all you mag/socom fans, the prebeta for steamearlyaccess starts this week and alpha game images are coming tomorrow!!
Warhawk never needed a a single player. The second multiplayer was over thought. The simplicity of the first game was endless fun.
unfortunately, MAG died with gen 7.. The focus will always be on the next money making franchise.
Launched in the UK late last year, the MAG II Gun Controller is making waves on the first-person shooter (FPS) scene for many reasons. Compatible with all existing and future PlayStation 3 and PC FPS titles, the MAG II Gun Controller isn’t simply a generic light gun; it’s a controller replacement for both single-player and multiplayer FPS experiences.
