Adding the feature to include a realtime IRC chat system in Unreal Tournament was a huge hit and I've been surprised Epic didn't expand on this.
Besides the IRC there was also UTPics where many UT gamers would put up photos of themselves and "facebook" like photos etc - it created a huge close knit community.
