Activision: Another Next-Gen Console Will Challenge Wii U Next Year – PS4 or Next Xbox Incoming?

People have been trying to guess at when the Playstation 4 and/or Xbox 720 will debut next year, while report after report has surfaced suggested one thing or another, but it now seems as though Activision has revealed one of those systems will be debuting this coming year to challenge the Wii U.

well looks like i'll get a ps4 then if it comes out before the next xbox either way they will all be MINNNNNNNNE

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34339d ago

They'll debut but they won't go on release until the following year. I'm taking all bets...

irepbtown4339d ago

It could be a brand new console as a whole (not from Sony/MS), though that is highly unlikely. I have to agree with WrAiTh, debut next year, release 2014. That makes a lot more sense.

ShinMaster4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Announced next year and released the year after.
I think we will see continued support for current consoles during and after next gen consoles launch.
The PS3's launch in 2006 never stopped continued PS2 support. Same with PS1.

And with the Wii U making games of the same PS3/360 caliber, we can expect multiplatform support to continue on those 3 consoles even after the PS4 and 720 launch.

of all people, Kotick must be in the know when it comes to stuff like this, it's critical to his wallet balance

and he just spilled it, Nextbox720 in 2013

Kingofforest4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

AMD- it's Sony's time to go next, since i'm behind all 3.

Jason1434339d ago

Valves system? maybe? Having all consoles now Im must say I think Im sticking with pc. The user created content for games just make my hard earned csh feel better spent. How many people on console can say they still play left 4 dead weekly :)

DOMination-4338d ago

Valve aren't making a console they are making some gaming glasses

FamilyGuy4339d ago

That doesn't sound like a reference to Sony or MS, maybe an Apple console is on the way... and soon o.O

ConstipatedGorilla4339d ago

Apple doesn't want the console market.

gobluesamg4339d ago

I can't wait till they are both announced and we can pour over all of the specs and compare and contrast. The console war continues, and that's a good thing.

Insomnia_844339d ago

All I can think of is...

PlayStation 4: Uncharted 4, Killzone 4, Resistance 4, God Of War 4...

That number had never looked so good!!!

Y_51504339d ago

Also inFAMOUS 3 (The 4th game in the series). :P

extermin8or4338d ago

I'm actually thinking new consoles:new IP's- ps4:uncahrted 4, killzone 4 and infamous 3 :)

showtimefolks4339d ago

its up in the air who will release their console next?

you have sony who are in trouble money wise and they just released VIta so is it wise to invest into a new machine? But they also don't want to be the last one out again and face 2 HD consoles

Than you have MS who have gone all casual on us and they care more that its a media box inside your living room than an actual gaming system. but they came out before sony/ps3 so they are also due for a newer system.

I think if i have to bet my heart says sony will release a new system in fall of 2013 but what's stopping MS they can also release one at the same time.

That's what i want to see actually ps4 vs xbox720 and see how strong xbox brand is when its going head to head with playstation, competetion meaning we the consumers win

and before i get many replies about how xbox360 is leading the sames above ps3 know this ps3 has outsold the xbox360 since launch and that huge lead has been cut down to 2 million and that's considering ps3 launched at $600. I think MS will have a tough battle either way IMO they have messed up wioth their fanbase. Each year before E3 there is talk of many games than everything is centered around kinect and more paid apps coming to xblive which are free every where else like youtube

wii-u free online service
psn free online service and with ps4 it will get cross game chat
xblive a paid serive

i fully expect xblive to loose some of its members next gen, why pay for something that will be available on other systems for free

xPhearR3dx4338d ago

"why pay for something that will be available on other systems for free"

Because some people feel the price is justified. Cell phone users who choose pay as you go plans could go with a contract to get better service, support, phones, etc but choose not to. To some people, paying $100 a month for their iPhone is better than paying $50 a month and getting tons of services for free through pay as you go.

I for one love my party chat. I also love the UI and controller of the 360. Therefor I feel the price is justified. Other people don't like paying for certain things that are free on other platforms and can do without party chat for example. More power to them. Your money, spend it how you choose.

extermin8or4338d ago

@xPhearR3dx actually people felt the cost was justified at the start of this gen but microsoft will have to do something truely exceptional to xbl to get consumers to ignore whatever evolution of the psn ps4 has and the bonus of ps plus for pretty much the same price as an xbl subscription...

showtimefolks4338d ago

xPhearR3dx

did you not read what i said?

here is it again when ps4 will support party chat system for free on psn than why is xblive worth the price when the other service is giving you that along with same other features for free

psn today is almost the same service as xblive minus the party chat and espn etc,

you need a gold account to use netflix when on every other device in the world as long as you hve an account you can use Netflix?

so its one thing to charge for something its another to force people to buy a service to use another service that have to b e paid separately

IMO unless MS truly offers something new and worth the money they will loose a lot of its xblive members when ps4 launches

xPhearR3dx4338d ago

I mentioned other reasons aside from party chat. You don't know if PS4 will offer party chat or not. You're just assuming. XBL and PSN may offer similar services, but they're not nearly the same. Free is not always better. When I purchase a console I dont go solely off if online is free or not. The UI, controller, functionality, games etc play a HUGE role in that decision. Online is free on the Wii, but due to the UI, controller and games, I'll never get one. Same will apply to next gen systems if certain aspects are lackluster.

joab7774338d ago

Sony cannot afford to let xbox get the jump this time unless the ps4 is superior in every way. Sony's financial troubles are serious and failure is not an option. Unless of course they r considered too big 2 fail and get bailed out. I dont think they r.

Ben124338d ago

StrongMan4339d ago

I doubt it will be Sony. They are still releasing new IPs. They are releasing 3 next year so far that we know of.

Hellsvacancy4339d ago

Sony isnt the kind of company that would drop support of the PS3 in favor of newer console, we'll see the PS4 next year, maybe not to buy, but we'll see it

nukeitall4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

No, they will just drop support for the newer product like PSP Go!

If it ain't profitable, watch Sony (or any company for that matter) drop it like poo!

It happened to PSP Go, I don't doubt it will happen again.

DigitalRaptor4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Wow, just wow. PSP go was a self admitted market test for Sony, they dropped it because no one was buying it.

Are people not buying PS3s or PS2s? there's your pretty straightforward answer. The value of a PS3 is only going to increase in the eyes of the casual consumer or late adopter over the next few years, just like with the PS2. The PS3 will continue to sell as long as the benefits exist to these types of consumer - the ones that will always be looking for the cheap, high proposition console with a ton of cheap older games. The 360 will see the same continued growth and support.

When PS4 comes out, you can bet your bottom dollar that the PS3 will see support by way of games and services and they'll still be selling it years later.

profgerbik4339d ago

Yep they said it has a good couple years even when the PS4 will be released quoting Sony themselves they said the PS3 will still see heavy support from them.

As you said Sony has never been one to drop anything, as why you still see some pretty quality PSP games being made even when the Vita has been out almost a year now.

Knight_Crawler4339d ago

@Digi Rap - Son was the PS Eye and Move also a test?

I pretty sure that Wonderbook will also be a test.

Outside_ofthe_Box4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

***"No, they will just drop support for the newer product like PSP Go!"***

I'm not understanding how the PSPGO is relevant to the PS3. The PS3 is currently selling isn't it? So why would Sony "drop support for the newer product like PSPGO!" if the PS4 were to release?

There are more evidence pointing towards Sony not dropping support(PS1,PS2,PSP) than Sony actually dropping support(PSPGO which was nothing more than just another PSP...), but keep bringing up the GO pretending that it validates your argument.

ShinMaster4339d ago

PS4 may be announced next year, but won't be released until the year after.
Besides, the PS3's launch in 2006 never stopped continued PS2 support.

And with the Wii U making games of the same PS3/360 caliber, we can expect multiplatform support to continue on those 3 consoles even after the PS4 and 720 launch.

DOMination-4338d ago

That's actually a very good and interesting point about the WiiU that i never realised before ^

There's no reason why third parties shouldn't continue to port their WiiU games to ps3/360.

extermin8or4338d ago

@nukitall the psp go was a different situation they didn't drop support for it they still support the psp and release psp games on the ps store which is all the psp go needs, they just stopped selling the hardware units.... stopping support means no more hardware no more software no more repairs etc there's a very big difference there. Sony wouldn't drop support for a whole console unless a successor was out or it had no choice but to do so or go under; that's just the way they seem to do their stuff they don't seem to accept giving up :p

Getowned4338d ago

"I doubt it will be Sony. They are still releasing new IPs. They are releasing 3 next year so far that we know of."

Then they probably would release the new ip's on the ps4, and than soon after have ps4 exclusive exclusives fallowing the next wave of exclusives... Thats what they normally do, slowly stop releaseing games on the old system to get people to start supporting the new.

I hope the ps4 is announced and released at the end of next year. I want to get all consoles next gen, hopefully no more gimmick consoles(like the Wii, IMO), and most of all I hope MS and Sony don't release table controlers like Nintendo(I think its fine on the Wii U, but I hope not every console will do it) I just want a Dual Shock 4 with the same layout, but with a more ergonomic shape, better triggers, maybe grips, and concave thumb sticks instead of convex, and of course rumble. the perfect controler imo.

NukaCola4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Looking at the recent chain of events I think the announcement is coming by or before E3 2013.

From the stellar line up from ports you can tell the Wii U jumped out the door a year early, when it clearly was meant for a 2013 release.

Super PS Slim finally releasing to grab the last of the nonPS3 gamers.

A solid launch line up of games in before the summer and nothing official for the winter.

Bluray technology meaning games play on PS4

Purchase of Gaikai.

The revamp of the store.

The Vita.

All these point to an announcement of PS3 really soon. I can guarantee it will be there at E3 along side the next Xbox. If it actually launches in 2013 is unknown but I think it may.

Although a thing to look at is Last of Us and Halo 4 out now --> feb. I wonder if the top hitters Halo 5 with release as a launch in two years and Sony with KZ4, UC4...or GOW4 as Ascension wasn't called such.

Either way who knows.

nukeitall4339d ago

I think you are right that Sony will release some information about PS4 right around E3 or when MS announces their next console.

I don't think Sony will release PS4 in 2013 though. Everything points to that, with new ips releasing in next year, still strong focus on PS3, the revamped store releasing (yes unlike MS, Sony hasn't released a real update to the store since forever).

This is more a tactic used spread FUD to slow down MS. Sony successfully did that to the Dreamcast so it would be an ingenious tactic.

Chitown712914339d ago

Yea honestly I think it will be announced next E3, and released in Spring of 2014. That was their original strategy with the PS3 (Announced E3 2005, and have it release Spring 2006) , but Blu-Ray delayed it. I think they still want to have a slight advantage in technology compared to the next Xbox, but they also want(need) it more optimized. Really all they need to do is have more ram (at least 4-6gb), and faster blu-ray drive. I have faith in Sony, they will get it right this time....they have no choice at this point

bangshi4339d ago

Quite correct.

They will _have_ to show the PS4 if they know MS is going to show the next Xbox.

They will need to make people not want to turn to the Xbox. They'll know people are itching after this lengthy console cycle.

I myself have a PS3 and I will be turning to the Xbox should it arrive first, I am sure I am not alone in that.

R6ex4339d ago

I will buy the console that comes out first.

Next-gen is LONG overdue!

TheDivine4338d ago

I thought the next xbox would release this year honestly. They could have had Halo 4 as a launch game and to start the new trilogy on a new console along with some other games like Gears, Alan Wake, and Fable early on next year. Im sure it will release next year but what will the launch games be? Som new ip's hopefully. People give MS shit but they released hell of new ip's early on and the ones that sold continued.

I cant really see Sony releasing the ps4 next year as they have The Last of Us, Last Guardian, FFvs13, and GOW yet to release. They need to release before a new console just on principal. Some of those were announced when the ps3 was new and if theyre on ps3 and ps4 i would be so pissed and feel jipped. They also have the vita to focus on which it def needs some real attention and ps3 quality games. Then again i know Sony wont let MS release early again so they have no choice in the matter.

I think the wii-u is honestly in the best position if they play their cards right and it is more powerful than current gen by a decent amount. We will see many games stay on ps360/wii-u and it will have exclusives. If they can make miiverse into a facebook/gaming forum thingy it will be something innovative and as big of a deal as xbl. They need to make the oline as good as xbl though because thats the golden standard which i doubt they will come close to (honestly).

Im content with my consoles now but once i see something like the Epic/Square demorunning a real game this will fel dated. Im excited for a wii-u but i dontknow if i want to invest when i can play my ps360 for a year or two until it drops and other consoles drop and build up a library (which is what i did this gen).

Really shouldve released now though with games like AC3, GTA5, Mgs Ground Zero, and others begging for more power. Imagine those 3 as launch games, i wouldve raced out to buy it right away!

extermin8or4338d ago

I think like with vita and sorta with the ps3 nov/december for japan and spring for usa/eu. However blu ray alone doesn't mean mean ps4 would be ps3 backwards compatible, after all if it runs on AMD like the rumors say, if it does use AMD then destroys itself t'd be hard to make it B/C or not be at all..

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 4338d ago
BitbyDeath4337d ago

All their games are releasing at the beginning of the year though which leaves plenty of time for people to play them and get a PS4.

Neonridr4339d ago

If either of them are going to actually release next year, I think it will be Microsoft. I think Sony still has some plans for the PS3 especially if they can get their Cross Play with the Vita working properly. Plus with their financial woes, I don't see them hastily launching another overpriced console again.

It seems to point towards Microsoft, but who knows. Maybe they are talking about the OUYA.. ;)

Wizziokid4339d ago

I'd say next xbox will launch next holiday and PS4 2014 both announced at E3 though.

I'll probably be getting both on launch like the Wii U.

KEEPNITREAL4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

100% agree with you Wizziokid !!!!!!!!!!

KingWilly1054339d ago

This is just stating the obvious. No way MS and Sony will allow Nintendo to run without competition for one more holiday season (even if they believe it is competing with the 360 and PS3).

Yea let’s shut down a AA studio that just put out a great game and open another AA studio out of nowhere. I swear Microsoft never make any sense.

purple10154d ago

tax evasion id pressume, maybe same reason sony spun off some form bungie into a new studio?

Terry_B52d ago

lol. when I read Jin's comment..I just knew one of the first replies would have the word Sony in them.

purple10152d ago

yer cos, if you open a new studio, you can put down a £200,000 (or whatever) cost for new offices, computers, hiring people, promotion, etc, against any profit,

if you stay with the same studio, you still have costs, but less so, as stuff is already up-and-running, them accounts teams don't just 'restructure' stuff, for fun, you know.

53d ago
ChasterMies52d ago

Probably has something to do with repatriating foreign profits.

anast52d ago

MS Xbox has made some curious decisions, but this studio has underperformed as a whole. Just because they made an average game with trendy art and they have game writer friends doesn't mean that they are releasing bangers consistently. Ghostwire, The Evil Within, and Hifi-Rush were average or slightly below average games. Evil within 2 was a solid game. So, in the last 10 years, this AA studio only made 1 good game. This is fine if we are talking about AAA companies like R* that make enormous games, but we aren't.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 52d ago
talocaca52d ago

Microsoft constantly talks about creating new studios but most of their titles end up coming from studios they just threw money at 🤷‍♂️

Remember when they hyped The Initiative as their Naughty Dog? It's been 6 years and we've seen a trailer....

Reaper22_52d ago

I remember when Killzone was supposed to be the Halo killer. That didn't work out out well either.

Let's not forget that Sony threw a butt load of money @ Bungie and they just laid off some people. And what have they produced since that purchase.

BehindTheRows52d ago

Whataboutisms don’t change anything and only show how out of touch you are. Microsoft’s handling of their studios has been poor. No amount of “but Sony” is going to change that.

What you should be doing is rooting for them to do better. They are where they are partially because many of their fans would rather shill instead of demanding better.

Cockney52d ago

I knew it had to be sonys fault

Dude Dutch52d ago

Sony never said it to be a Halo killer.

__SteakDeck__52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

@Reaper22_ You mean Destiny 2 The Final Shape, arguably the best Destiny expansion and one of the highest rated titles of the year? Also. No one is saying that Sony doesn’t miss. But PS’s hit rate is much higher than Xbox’s.

Doomeduk52d ago

Just give the nurse her phone back eh ?

-Foxtrot52d ago

Actually Haze was suppose to be the Halo killer

If you’re going to bring Sony into it and call them at least do it right

KillBill51d ago

Yes... the term "Halo Killer" was very popular in all of the articles on the game when it was being promoted. Everyone claiming that "Sony never said..." and yet today we know and have learned that articles are controlled by those who pay for them to happen.

This was the early days of game marketing change that had Sony trying to not have anyone fill the hole that Sega left in their departure. They discounted MSFT early on and then reacted only when they actually had some traction.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 51d ago
The Wood52d ago

Bottom line is the Xbox part of Microsoft is in a helluva mess. The pivots are snapping ankles.

KillBill52d ago

Obviously the team that remained after so many left didn't meet the needs of MSFT. A new team is not unusual for new projects. Some of the old team moved on internally and we do not know where they all went. The resources elsewhere that were freed up could likely have even been a part what spun up this new studio. Resources move. Just not in Tango Austin anymore.

jwillj2k452d ago

Nobody left they were let go. Stop trying to sugar coat it. If they didnt meet the needs its Microsofts fault.

This whole thing stinks like it was a flip coin decision made on the golf course with a bunch of beers.

Reaper22_52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Just like many here were sugar coating not long ago Bungie laying off people and acting like Sonywas in the dark and had nothing to do with it. They are the parent company . They knew.

KillBill51d ago

Incorrect. Prior to the the studio being shut down Shinji Mikami the lead developer left to create his own studio. And some of his team left with him. He wanted to take a completely new direction in his development and didn't want to continue "His reasons for wanting to leave weren't animus, as Mikami said he wanted to create an environment where young talent could prosper through development which included shorter project cycles, for example. Mikami also had a desire to make unique, smaller scale games himself, so wanted to connect these two ideas." He felt after take over by Zenimax that he became closer to a "rank-and-file employee" and had been wanting to leave since then.

After his departure MSFT was not comfortable with the remaining team as it stood and closed it along with other studios during the period of restructure.

Just a myriad of investment in searching for reasons why things happen would have led anyone to the actual answer instead of simply supposing and creating a 'coin flip on the gold course' scenario.
