Wii U: Will History Repeat Itself?

With the Wii U's launch less than a month away, Vince from Gamefocus.ca gives us his opinion on the future of the console compared to the original Wii.

I was one of those people who got the Wii right when it launched, but after playing it a few times it started collecting dust on the shelf....

That'd be another good reason to add to the list. Many gamers weren't satisfied with the Wii's lack of focus on hardcore games, so many may not buy the Wii U.

Exactly. There are a few games though that I'd love to have, like Rayman Legends and Zelda Wii U... other than that, I'm not too excited. Especially considering how expensive the console is.

history has already repeated itself. By that i am referring to the original NES and how it was the thing to have back in the day. it has been heralded as the saving grace in the console crash of the early 80's.

so fast forward and we pretty much have a repeat of that saving grace. Although, gaming wasnt really in dire straights when the Wii came out. What the wii did was revolutionize gaming to be more than the typical demographic that was the target audience.

By adapting the simplistic nature of waggle play (as the term came to be called) it allowed those who didnt know a thing or had not played a game for many MANY years to get into it.

The wii-u history to be repeated will not be one of the success of the wii but more specifically that of the SNES. Those of us old enough to remember that transition will understand the comparative.

by no means will wii-u come close to matching wii numbers. unless of course nintendo marketing can find that convincing way to entice existing wii owners to upgrade. This is not about convincing the diehard gamers. this is about convincing the soccer moms and old folks homes, etc.

Wii-u represents a considerable improvement to the wii much like the snes did for the nes. It will take a bit longer but if history from the previous platforms is something to use as a gauge then the wii-u will not disappoint.

Most will see the wii-u and wonder why the need to upgrade. There may not be an immediate need to upgrade but that comes down to how nintendo markets this platform as the logical choice between the two.

I think the Wii U will be this generations SNES I'm 32 right now and the SNES was flat out ridiculous I played New Super Mario Bros. Wii and felt a little weird in a good way I haven't played mario since Mario 64. So i'm excited to play Nintendo in HD and this is coming from a X360 guy. Im getting a little tired of shooter here shooter there everywhere a shoot shoot experience.

Yeah, I'd love Rayman and Zelda but Rayman was pushed back and we have no idea when Zelda will come out. I think waiting is probably the next option for now.

Definitely, and hopefully the price will drop after a while. Plus, a lot of games that are coming out on Wii U are ones I already have for PS3 or Xbox 360. I can't see any reason to get it right now. Of course, if I got it for Christmas I obviously wouldn't complain.

The thing about the Wii is that it had fantastic games or just...nothing games.

I don't know. People bought Furby the first time and hated it within a week.

Sales for the new Furby aren't great though.

I'll be getting one as soon as it's released. The games that are on offer appeal to me. As far as history goes, well I have bought every Nintendo console since they started selling consoles, so yes, history is repeating.

yeah haters hated...then wii won this generation and of course after sony and microsoft copied the winning formula..then the crybaby fanboys found all ways to say that their didnt copy motion control and that their controller was better....after wiiu wins this generation you can expect a repeat performance from haters.

looks 50/50 to me.. I see & hear many ppl saying "i want it" & just as many saying "hell no".. I know that at the game store i go to, the majority isnt interested but another down the street is pumped..
