Doom 3 BFG ‘The Lost Mission’ basically reuses assets from vanilla game

GB: The Lost Mission is sort of an expansion pack to complement the release of Doom 3 BFG edition. It adds a bunch of unique new content to the game and also features some cut content, so that increases the value of the entire thing, right?

I think people are over exaggerating, but they have a point.

Now say what you want about the main game, I like Doom 3 (and RoE) and still play it to this day, thanks to a rather large mod community. The Lost Mission was the only genuinely new part of the BFG edition and it seems as though it uses recycled prefabs from past levels. This isn't uncommon per se, most maps reuse things from past levels all the time, but it's as if they didn't even TRY to vary it up.

What IS bullshit is the absolute lack of care from id Software. They honestly used to be one of my all-time favorite developers. It's not that they've gone to console either. Quite frankly, as long as the product is good - I couldn't care less what platform it's on. But look at the facts:

Game natively supports HD resolutions - But so could the original game with a few simple config tweaks

Upscaled the game to higher resolutions without touching the textures, which in turn just makes the game look blurrier than it used to.

No co-op Doom 3 which even the orignal Xbox version had. To be honest, this was the only thing I was really looking forward to.

Removed dynamic shadows from the game, giving it a more 'static' look.

The versions of Doom 1 and Doom II included aren't even the best versions of the game.

Mods for vanilla Doom 3 do not work on BFG edition, rendering years of cool new maps, mods and graphical enhancements useless.

...it just fails. It would have been a decent package if it were released several years ago. But everyone who wants Doom 1+2 as well as Resurrection of Evil have either got them already via Steam or XBLA. I just don't see any incentive. As I said, what REALLY annoyed me was the lack of co-op. So with all that said, to find out that The Lost Mission bonus levels quite literally recycled parts of old maps without even trying to make it look different just solidifies my opinion of this game being a complete waste of time and money.

Doom 3: BFG Edition should only be considered if you've never played Doom 3 before on any other platform.

doom 3 is one of my fav games of all time, i like the level design, the old school game design, the enemy design, it's a classic, i played it for the first time on xbox 1 in 2005 and now bought the bfg edition and it's still amazing and exposes the plain game design we see today, i agree some people are over exaggerating, it's a cool thing to do on the internet, whining has became part of today's entertainment

@ape007, I'm glad you're still finding enjoyment out of Doom 3. I know I am, but I'm just replaying the original game. I too love the level design and honestly think people exaggerate over how dark it was/is. I don't think the laser sight/duct tape flashlight was necessary on BFG Edition either. At least make it optional. I guess since you only played the Xbox version of Doom 3, the BFG edition will somewhat look like an upgrade. But for Christ sake id, why remove co-op? And believe me, I'm not a big multiplayer guy either. I just remember dicking with a third party co-op mod and after I finally got it working, it was absolutely hilarious trying to scare the shit out of my friends. It was a great experience.

I really liked doom 3 when I played in ot PC years ago, but this game costing 40$ seems like a huge rip off.

I really hate all these HD and re-masters. Most of them are just an excuse to raise the price to new again and Id say 80% of them dont need to be re released.

This game should be a 20/15$ DL title not a 40$ one.
