Wii U: ‘Nintendo rolling out Unity to all 1st & 3rd party studios’

Wii U will support the Unity platform, and the company’s CEO David Helgason has explained to VG247 that the engine will be brought in-house at Nintendo for all of its first-party studios to use, as well as its third-party partners. Helgason has also explained that the deal will give the Unity community free reign to develop titles for Wii U.

This is certainly interesting...

I was just telling my friend how all Iphone/Android games would work with the Wii U gamepad if they let it happen. This would be it.

majiebeast4627d ago (Edited 4627d ago )

Unity engine is weak when you compare it to engines build from scratch for the platform. So i hope Nintendo doesnt get lazy and force their developers to use it to cut cost.

Neonridr4627d ago (Edited 4627d ago )

So many games that are created for ios devices are all built using Unity. That means that all of those games can easily be ported over to the Wii U. Could you imagine having the eshop filled with all those extra games.

I don't think they are encouraging developers to use that over the Unreal Engine or CryEngine or Frostbite. I think it was a move to help lure more indie support for the system. It's not like you are going to see the next Zelda game built using the Unity Engine.

Its more about Nintendo making Wii-U the number one console choice for indie studios.

cleft54627d ago

I think this gesture is to help third parties be able to take advantage of the WiiU features easily by allowing for quicker programming and developing times. Building an engine from the ground up, takes a good deal of time and resources. With this companies can come out of the gate running.

Just look at the situation with Bethesda on PS3. That whole thing is just a disaster, by doing this Nintendo is able to ensure that developers have a good understanding of what the WiiU is capable of and how everything works. I really hope that indie developers take advantage of Unity.

stuntman_mike4627d ago

i think its a Excellent engine, it's still in its early stages and will improve. it's only really been used for mobile games so far but get it in some talented peoples hands and it could be a preffered choice.

check out some of the demos and videos you will be surprised.

I think this will end up being huge!

cleft54627d ago

This will definitely help us see a lot more games for the WiiU within the first year of the console's life span.

yeh, it will make the mobile games market accessible to console owners, via nintendos wiiu. so they wont be competing with that market, they will be a part of it.

very clever

You never see anything close to these tech demos in actual game releases. More fluff than anything.

Playstati0n263d ago

How does it feel to not be in the sequel to your own franchise? Their virtue signal will cost them sales

Yi-Long266d ago

I think Unity exposed themselves last year, and IMO any developer should just stay away from them completely.

isarai266d ago

Exactly my thoughts, they killed so much interest in their engine since doing that. Godot looks like it's rising to take it's place as the indie darling game engine.

Palitera264d ago (Edited 264d ago )

In its current pace, Godot would need decades to reach Unity's current state. Almost no studios use it. For hobbyists, it's a valid option, though.
Gotta be real about it: Unity was and will continue as the market leader for small studios. There's no competition in this sense.

Palitera264d ago

The thing is: there's nothing even remotely as good as Unity for small studios game development, even if you consider the company's disgraced trust.

So, sure, it's your opinion, but most professionals have not and will not leave Unity.

And Godot is a hobby project in comparison, not even an option.

victorMaje264d ago (Edited 264d ago )

The thing is: this is the kind of comment Unity was getting when it was up and coming.
I remember when I started learning Unity it was looked at with disregard, this is where Godot is now, remember this, in a few years, Godot will get there.

plmkoh263d ago

@victorMaje

I hope you realize how ridiculous your comments sounds when you suggest "Waiting for Godot" is an option.

It made me chuckle for a good 20 seconds.

victorMaje263d ago

@plmkoh

Haha I’m not suggesting to wait for it. I’m saying with all the updates (each one better than the previous one) Godot will get where it needs to, to be considered more than just a hobby engine.
In fact it can already do a lot, it’s all about how you approach the problem.

Palitera263d ago

PlayCanvas, Babylon, Defold, Cocos Creator etc.
This generic statement of "it's not as great as Unity YET" could be applied to any other engine (no offense to these mentioned great engines).

The fact is: it is a hobby engine, almost no studio is using it. As much as I'd like to see Unity fall, it's not happening at all. There's simply no competitor.

I guess it bite them in the ass. Pretty sure it's still too late and those who were burned by it, will not come back.

Hmm.
They may just remain a company after all. They lost a lot of good faith with all this, however.

Exclusive: Unity Software cutting 25% of staff in ‘company reset’ continuation

Jan 8 (Reuters) - Videogame software provider Unity Software (U.N) will target laying off approximately 25% of its workforce, or 1,800 jobs, the company said in a regulatory filing and internal company memo on Monday.

They wanted everyone to move to Unreal 5 and GoDot 4.

UltimateOwnage523d ago

What a waste. And despite all of this cut and slash, their polices are doubling down on what led to all of this. They have committed themselves to bring a losing brand going forward. Good riddance. Maybe Microsoft will buy them out, they seem to have a lot in common.
