The Pre-Order Problem

Everything from XCOM: Enemy Unknown to Dark Souls had some kind of ‘reward’ waiting for people willing to dole out their money months before the game would ever see the light of day.

you know what I do with the preorder bonus. I sell them off online and technically get my games for free.

My cousin pre-ordered Xcom, I got a free copy of Civ 5, so I can't complain lol!

Rather than anti-piracy, they're more for publishers to use to gauge interest in a game. I.e. if they have a big name title coming up with only half a dozen pre-orders in place they know they're going to have to step up their marketing, cut their losses, etc.

But, i don't see the problem in pre-orders. The bonuses are usually superfluous, so if you're on the fence, hang on.
I'd assume the majority of people who pre-order are those who either;
a: are invested in a franchise. e.g. FIFA, COD, PES, who enjoy the series and are willing to risk the next iteration being poop because of the enjoyment they've taken from the previous ones.
or
b: have been following a games progress, through previews, etc, so would have a reasonable idea of how good a game is shaping up to be.

There are going to be times you get caught out if you pre-order - that is the chance you take - but anyone who kept even a vague ear to the ground and still pre-ordered DNF deserves all they got, mwahahahah!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
