XCOM: Enemy Unknown Survival Guide

Dealspwn.com presents ten essential tips and strategies to survive in the cut-throat battles of XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

"Nothing gives you battlefield domination like a well-placed sniper, but since they can't move and fire in the same turn without equipping a restrictive perk, they can be hard to use effectively. However, by equipping the Squadsight perk, they can fire on any enemy unit that their squadmates can see, allowing you to use your frontline troops as spotters while keeping your sharp shooter stationary.

You'll want to get your sniper to central high ground as quickly as possible, preferably using grappling hook-equipped Skeleton armour to secure lofty rooftop perches. A S.C.O.P.E. gadget (more on that later) will increase his/her accuracy to insane levels, while the Gunslinger ability will give their pistol sidearm some much-needed clout if Floaters manage to compromise their position."

Those damn Chrysalids indeed! Cracking game though! Definitely going to be in the running for GOTY come December.

Lost so many men to Chryssalids, wish they didn't move during your turn when you discover them!

Just when you think it's safe, they'll burst out of cover and impregnate you with disgusting babies :-(

Utter kudos to Firaxis. THAT'S how you do a franchise reboot!

I agree. Really loving this game. Great reboot and an IP that was desperately needed this gen. Gives a breath of fresh air.

My only gripe about the game is that there should be an auto save feature. Saving just before each mission to ensure I keep all my soldiers alive and not wasted exp can get a tad annoying.

Definitely deserves a nod for GOTY

@Lvl_up_gamer: there is an autosave! :) I didn't realise it myself at first, but you can activate it in the main menu - it saves every round and in the geoscape.

Makes the first run a bit easier.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183597d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
