Resident Evil 6 director explains why ‘mass-market appeal’ was necessary

Resident Evil 6 has released worldwide to a mixed critical reaction. Some love it, others detest it. It was always going to be tricky for Capcom, but director Hiroyuki Kobayashi explains why his team moved towards action instead of back to the series’ horror roots.

Of course crapcom.

lociefer4020d ago

BUT, on the bright side, maybe the next res will be a top down first person action horror rpg simulator

MikeMyers4020d ago

I'm hoping for a Resident Evil Karting game myself, where we can shoot dirty syringes to infect the other racers.

I_LOVE_MYSELF4020d ago

Reaching out to as many players as possible IS very important. Capcom was on to a winner with the multiple campaign modes. It could have pleased everyone. They could have had one campaign feel very much like the 3DS game and another campaign focusing on action whilst kind of having a horror theme (say like resi 5... similar feel to Resi4, but the backdrop was more action packed) that could be played Coop.

2 Campaigns and they could have been a very decent length each. It would appeal to the older fans and the newer fans.

Carl_Shocker4020d ago

LOL this is hillarious

I knew for a fact they would ignore the negative reviews and reception for the game and try to justify themselfs

Whats the point of going for a new audience when all your doing is pushing your old audience out....at the end of the day your not expanding your audience your replacing them. It's RE, if you guys stayed loyal to the franchise then it would of sold regardless of it's genre.

Whitefox7894020d ago

That's PR for you, they don't know how to express humility or shortcomings.

Probably the only developer I've seen who showed his own humility was Hideo Kojima, where he expressed how disappointed he was in MGS4 when the final product didn't achieve everything from his original vision of the game; 4 months before the game came out.

LiquidSword934020d ago

Justifying yourself now, are you capcom? Well I justify my hard earned cash by NOT buying this abomination of a resident evil game. ;)

TenSteps4020d ago

When you think about it especially now that they're justifying they're at the third stage of grief. They're bargaining with us trying to get us to not hate them. Only one more stage to pass before we might actually see change provided they don't go back into denial.

LiquidSword934020d ago

"provided they don't go back into denial". Thats a very big 'if' I'm afraid. This is capcom remember? Expect the worst, hope for the best :)

AznGaara4020d ago

Easy answer really... to make more money.

mcstorm4020d ago

I agree. I thought after playing Revolutions that the Res series was going to be as good as 1 2 3 and 4 but after giving 6 a go I was not impressed at all. I will be giving this a miss and I really hope Rem decided to make an Alan Wake 2 as imo this is better than the home console Res games and has been one of the best games of this gen for me.

bubblebeam4020d ago

@AznGaara

True. I can understand if the series was not selling very good, and they were so poor they would have to cancel ownership of the franchise, but the RE games have always sold well.

Same as EA with Dead Space. It isn't as big as the Cods, Halos, Battlefields, etc., but not all games are meant to be that big. They should appreciate the fans they have and be proud.

Likewise, they don't have to spend HALF of what goes into those big games. All we ask is for a proper RE game that has more of the horror we grew up with.

Sadly, I think next gen and in the future, Horror games are going to be pretty much non-existent, at least as long as developers think they have to appeal to everyone and their grandma.

bubblebeam4020d ago

@mcstorm

I can definitely see the similarities between Alan Wake and Resident Evil, but they are 2 completely different games with a different focus.

So, in other words, it (Alan Wake 2) will not fill the void that the new Resident Evil games have left.

Although, I agree. Alan Wake is one of my favourite games of all time. Remedy are excellent, I even loved American Nightmare. Alan Wake, like Heavy Rain, are the games that cannot be missed.

mcstorm4020d ago

@bubblebeam I agree Alan Wake is not the same as res games but it is kind of a Horror style game. It has more of a story line than res games but ide be happy for Remedy to carry on pushing Alan Wake. I just hope the 2nd game if they bring it out sells well as the 1st did not get the numbers it deserved.

Perjoss4020d ago

These days everything is trying to be Gears/Uncharted, thats why indie gaming is looking more and more fresh and innovative every day.

GiantFriendlyCrab4020d ago

what your favorite indie games now days ?

Perjoss4020d ago

Right now im playing a ton of FTL, An amazing game made by just 2 guys.

Plagasx4020d ago

Also, if you want a real horror game, keep a look out for the new game coming out on PC called Routine :)

Perjoss4020d ago

Already approved it on Greenlight, i cant wait for that one.

Rauland4020d ago

making a crap game will appeal the masses? well with all the crap the masses watch on tv or the movies i guess it makes sense.

doogiebear4020d ago

Top tv show is Jersey Shore and top "musicians" are nicki minaj, gaga, and bieber. Yeah this generation is the stupidest ever. No wonder crap like COD and Gears sells year after year with minimal-to-no changes at all.

GiantFriendlyCrab4020d ago

people would say your are just getting older

doogiebear4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

@ arq888:

Not really. Think about it: I enjoy the kind of music my parents grew up on (70's and 80's rock) even though they never pushed it on me. But I also like newer bands like Silverstein because the music is actually good. I'm in college now, and I seriously can't stand when other people there listen to crap music or talk about stupid shows. Seriously, can you justify the "lyrics" behind Minaj and Gaga's songs? Can u explain the appeal of their lame, repetitve looped samples in their so called music? Can u also explain to me the benefit of watching a bunch of tanned Jersey morons who party all day and throw up all night in front of a camera, when I (as viewer) could have been outside enjoying my own life instead of watching them waste their own? Must I be 80 years old to see the absolute idiocy of this generation? Just because i'm of this generation, doesnt mean I like it. Do you?

GiantFriendlyCrab4020d ago

yeah i agree with you, but people will defend the entrainment of this current generation, by saying you are just getting older or you are out of touch or something

CalvinKlein4020d ago

no wonder uncharted sells and its full of repetitive boring shooting. Yay lets shoot the same enemy over and over!!!

HarryMasonHerpderp4020d ago (Edited 4020d ago )

I know exactly how you feel.
I'm 24 years old and I just don't get this new generation at all.
Everything now is just so artificial.
Reboots in games and films which are never as good as the originals.
Music is at an all time low that could be made in about 5 minutes on an electric keyboard singing about partying in the club and shaking your ass and it sells millions!
There's no quality in anything it's always just shallow plastic people making tons of money for doing absolutely nothing and the kids love it.
Also cartoons are now crap.
BTW Silverstein are awesome!

There Will Never Be Another Resident Evil 6 (And That Sucks)

A rough gem that may never get the proper treatment it deserves.

Terry_B204d ago

^^ I don't want what the author was smoking.

-Foxtrot203d ago

It’s this thing where after enough time people start coming out to defend bad games for some strange reason

I mean hey if you liked it good for you but it was a f****** awful RE game.

Capcom are finally back on track and now people are crying about their shitty mistakes? No thanks.

RpgSama202d ago

I'd take a full blown remake of RE6 based around a GREATLY expanded Leon part and make it even more horror.

That might be something I would be interested in, do not care about any of the other parts of that game.

MadLad202d ago

I couldn't even get through the demo.
Years later I bought it for $3 for PC. I played about 5 minutes into it and uninstalled it.

babadivad202d ago (Edited 202d ago )

RE6 was better than 5. RE6 just took the series to the conclusion that started with 4.

RE4 was the inaugural title in the action game trilogy.

RE9 will be the likely end of the first person psychological thriller trilogy.

They'll switch it up for RE10 or more likely titled RE-X.

hotnickles202d ago

5 is vastly better than 6 imo

TheEnigma313202d ago

RE5 is way better than 6. Stop lying to yourself

FallenAngel1984203d ago (Edited 203d ago )

“But all this is solely with respect to how fans felt back in 2013 when Resident Evil 6 had just been released. The game resulted in the series getting indefinitely killed off until 5 years later when we got Resident Evil 7 and balance was restored yet again. ”

1.) Resident Evil 6 came out in 2012, not 2013

2.) A series getting killed off means no titles at all released in a time period. Silent Hill, Dead Space, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve & Siren fans would love to see how you can say RE was on the same level of dormancy. In that 5 year time period we had a number of remasters that kept the series alive and kicking. RE1 02ms remaster even broke sales records during the period between RE6 and RE7.

3. Way to disrespect Resident Evil: Revelations 2. It was released during that RE6-RE7 period. It along with its predecessor were mainline titles that kept the horror roots of the series alive in comparison to RE5 and RE6. RE: R1 in particular even introduced the ability to walk and shoot into the series, a feature we can all be grateful for that in modern RE titles. The director RE: R1 later went on to direct RE7 and the director of RE: R2 later went to to direct the RE2 & RE4 remakes.

Immagaiden203d ago (Edited 203d ago )

“Resident Evil 6 is often maligned as the worst entry in the Resident Evil series and is cited as the cause behind the long death of the franchise.”

Titles in the Resident Evil series such as Survivor, Gaiden, Dead Aim, Outbreak, Operation Raccoon City, Umbrella Corps, & Resistance we’re received far worse than RE6.

And death of the franchise?

RE6 was still one of the most commercially successful games in the series, guaranteeing the franchise’s future. Compare how underwhelming sales of Dead Space 3, Silent Hill: Downpour. Alone in the Dark: Illumination, Dino Crisis 3, Fatal Frame: Maiden in Black Water, Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2, and Metroid: Other M which caused their respective series to go into a long period of dormancy without any rereleases to even keep activity up.

RE however still had a significant number of titles released and rereleased after RE6. Not only that but development for RE7 started a short time after its predecessor came out, meaning there was never a development time that the series could be considered dead. There hasn’t been a single year that Capcom stopped either developing, releasing, or rereleasing Resident Evil games. Let’s not act like the 5 year period between RE6 and RE7 is such a longer time compared to the 4 year period between RE4 and RE5 as well as RE7 and RE8. We can pretty much expect RE9 in either 2025 or 2026, and you can be certain that Capcom will still release other RE tiles leading up to it

TheEnigma313202d ago (Edited 202d ago )

Man go some where with this. Only a few like this game. Why would they remake a garbage game no one likes risking money because it won't sell? RE 6 is dumpster drippings, sorry.

MIDGETonSTILTS17202d ago

It wasn’t that good, even if you enjoyed it like me.
