Rumor: AMD Rep says Wii U uses custom Radeon E6760 GPU, AMD's head of PR responds

A Representative for AMD stated in an email that the Wii U uses a specialized AMD E6760 GPU. Whether this is legit or not remains to be seen but the email where the rep makes this comment appears to be legit.

Did the rep just make that up? Or is he/she telling the truth?

UPDATE: AMD's head of Product PR Phil Hughes just responded to Gimme Gimme Games on this matter. Hughes doesn't deny it, only saying "We can confirm that the Wii U will use AMD graphics but we have not provided any specifics on what silicon they will be using in the upcoming console."

I dunno isnt the Radeon 6760 a pretty expensive GPU wouldnt the Wii U cost a lot more if it had one of these inside it.

Its actually pretty low end. This is the closest match i could find to it on

It costs 99 usd, but that's with being a discrete card, Nintendo would get a much better price.

A 6670 which is slightly more powerful than the card nintendo wants to use manages about 30fps in Crysis 2 at 1080p with no AA high settings:

Remember Crysis 2 is a current gen game, meaning if a game were to look better Res would need to be reduced in order to maintain the 30fps. Hence i feel Nintendo will most likely be aiming for 720p on most games next gen.

Now people will argue oh consoles get more optimization. While this may be true, console optimization advantages are limited. Most of the time Devs play tricks such as using low res, low res textures, no AA, low Filtering etc and call that optimization.

The proof is in the pudding if console optimization was so good then consoles would be out performing a 8800GTX from 5 years back, which they dont. An 8800GTX even today equipped with a dual core cpu will run most games in 1080p, thats something no console can do even after being on market for so many years. Hence personally i dont believe in much console optimisation, its mostly cheating what devs call optimisation.

Whoever disagrees doesnt understand video cards at all...

The E6760 is AMD's first embedded *GPGPU* that came out last year. It's highly plausible, considering the fact that it's a GPGPU like Iwata said it was and how it has good performance for a low wattage.

It's comparable to a 4850 (a 4 year-old card), except a tad bit stronger and supports a more modern feature set (DX 11-like features.)

richierich2221d ago

I had one too it handeled Crysis 1 and 2 pretty well

stuntman_mike2221d ago

These are the spec for the E6760 for those interested

clock speed: 600MHz
Memory: 800MHz/3.2Gbps, 128bit, 1GB GDDR5
480 shaders
AMD HD3D technologies
Direct X11
Shader 5.0
Directcompute 11
40nm processor @35W PCI-E 2.1 + AMD Eyefinity supports up to 6 displays

*jesus, i have no idea what these guys are talking about. GPu, AMD 4850? WTF? what do I say in response to this article? Do I say its good or bad? I cant answer with that because I have no idea if its good or bad! what can I say?...... hmm.. I GOT IT!*

Very interesting news indeed :D

Spend a little time on ReviewTechUSA's YouTube channel. I didn't know much about specs until I started watching his videos and got a better idea about them.

Beyond that, one thing that helps is to remember that larger numbers on the card usually means better performance.

richierich2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

@Khordchange GPU means Graphics Processing Unit (graphics card) which is the main component used for video game graphics and also for frame rate (how smooth a game runs) the better the GPU, CPU (Processor) and more RAM (Random Access Memory) then the more poweful a games console is. The Result = nextgen graphics. better graphics than PS3 and 360 but not as good as PS4 and nextgen Xbox

metroid322221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

Its performance scores a vantage 5870 or round about thats the stock version a custom version could score 7000 hmmm a 4850 isnt even close.

WheatBread2221d ago (Edited 2221d ago )

If this is true, then the Wii U is gonna kick ass.
