Sony Online Entertainment’s John Smedley on the past, present and future of free-to-play

EDGE - Sony Online Entertainment might be best known in the free-to-play space for successful recent convert DC Universe Online and the upcoming Planetside 2, but as company president John Smedley tells us, Sony’s MMOG division has actually been in free-to-play for a while: Free Realms, a kid-friendly online adventure game, was released for PC three years ago. But while many early western adopters of free-to-play point to Asia as their source of inspiration, for Smedley it was a game made in an English university town some 5,000 miles away from the free-to-play pioneers in South Korea.
