SCEE On The New PS3: We Don’t Set Pricing | TheSixthAxis

TSA: "Sony’s brand new PS3, which we revealed at 5am this morning, has seen many sites (including us) trying to figure out the pricing from the Euro and Dollar equivalent.

However, SCEE (Sony’s European branch) have been in touch with TheSixthAxis this morning to point out that they don’t set pricing – or, at least, they haven’t set an RRP."

they are giving the initiative to retailers on this to give them room to make deals for customers, if sellers see more profit they will advertise and display more.

Problem is, Sony does set the prices in the sense that they sell it at a certain price to retailers. Unless there is a very high demand (which has really never happened this late in a console cycle), there is a lower ceiling on the price.

So Sony doesn't set the price directly, but the price is pretty much determined, because the next guy is going to sell it that similar price point.

I set the prices.

I also ate the yogurt.

Just kidding; but I did eat the yogurt.

Agreed. It looks like Sony are trying to spark a price war between retailers. This suggests to me that those retailers must be getting PS3 for quite a lot less than they retail for. This IS a price cut but instead of handing that price cut directly to the consumer, Sony have handed it to the retailers. This is risky, especially with the Wiiu coming out this year. I'm not saying it's a bad move, I'm saying it's make or break for sales this Christmas...

nukeitall is right, they do set the price to retailers as Sony has a wholesale cost. Retailers in general don't make a hell of a lot of money off of the hardware but Sony has cut costs of the Playstation 3 over the years so it would be interesting to know how much these new ones cost to make.

Maybe it's because I'm really tired, but is the new model with FIFA bundle coming out this month just at that UK store for now?
