The humans did not really drive the flood back, they and the Forerunners thought, they saw how much the humans were willing to sacrifice so they decided to not attack them and test them later since they seem to be directly linked to a Precursor intelligence.

No the Humans had a way to destroy the flood, but refused to share it with the Promithians.

They really didn't, both sides thought they did but in Primordium it was revealed that they purposely did not attack them because they were to be the next in line for their test of the Mantle due to how much the humans were willing to sacrifice to fight them off.

The flood attacked the Forerunners in the first place because they were created by the Precursors who were about to destroy the Forerunners because they went against their duties of the Mantle, the Forerunners caught on and attacked first wiping out all precursors and their home planet Charum Hakkor. All precursors were dead except for one called The Timless One, the Didact eventually killed him by making him age millions of years in seconds but before the Didact killed him The Timeless One HEAVILY hinted that the Precursors and the Flood were one in the same or that the Flood was the next step in life for them that they manufactured.

It was revealed that the Flood faked getting defeated. They likely just wished to gain suffiecient biomass and numbers to assault the Forerunners.
