Wii U's Price May Prove to Be Too High As It Focuses On Casuals, Not the Core

As expected, Nintendo finally revealed the details on Wii U we've been anticipating for months: a price and release date. The new system launches on November 18 in the United States in two distinct versions. The Basic set includes a white system and will be priced at $300, while the Deluxe set containing a black system will come in at $350. We also now have a clear impression of what to expect in terms of software in the console's first few months of availability. With that knowledge in hand, it seems as if Nintendo is gearing the system to a more casual audience, but if that's the case, it could be that these prices are a bit too high.

What!? Did you see the same presentation as me

Core game after core game shown off and announced, combine that with previously announced games like zombiu pikmin 3 and Mario

Nintendo has definitely shown its focus is now the core gamer

Nimblest-Assassin2320d ago

They will be fine... the hardcore nintendo fanbase will buy it in the west

And they paired monster hunter with the console in Japan... so thats going to move a lot of units

They will be fine

sikbeta2320d ago

It's not only about nintendo fanbase alone, GC and N64 weren't big players in their respective generations, guess why?

But Nintendo will be fine because = WII-U comes after WII aka best selling console this gen, the same people that bought the wii in droves will do the same with U.

vividi2320d ago

yeah the same as ps3, ps2 best selling console and the fallow up system too, oh wait? not great logic

Nintendo has done a good job of keeping the entire family in mind with the Wii U. From the core (Zombie U, Bayonetta 2, Mass Effect 3, CoD BlOps 2, Darksiders 2, Ninja Gaiden 3) to the entire family (NintendoLand, Super Mario U, Wii TV, Wii U Fit). Do people expect Nintendo to make a console with just M rated games? Sony and MS have casual games for their systems too, but no one is accusing them of not being "core". As a core games, I think Nintendo has clearly shown that they want to earn back the core gamers with the Wii U... I have enough faith that they will, that I pre-ordered.

Most people don't consider Mario or Pikmin a core game anymore they consider it to be casual don't ask me why but they do. It also doesn't help their case that some of those games are already on the PS3/Xbox (which happens every console launch). Its pretty much all in the eye of the beholder really. When you really think about it it is still cheap than an iPad lol, but the games a lot more expensive. My main reason for not getting one is that controller it looks very uncomfortable to me. I will stick with my normal controller for awhile longer at least (that Wii U pro controller looks uncomforable too.

Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, Mass Effect, Aliens, Monster Hunter, CoD, Assassin's Creed, Tekken and Darksiders II were core games...... then they got on Nintendo :P

BTW when I say NG I mean what the "hardcore" define as "true 3D" Ninja Gaiden because apparently Dragon Sword wasn't good at all >_>

@ ABizzle1 = Monster Hunter will make sure Nintendo DOMINATE Japan. At the very least that will prove far too enticing for pretty much every Japanese publisher to ignore. Monster Hunter pretty much locks Japanese core support for the entire generation. I can't believe people are still debating this third party stuff.

Nintendo are far too strong in Japan right now for publishers to abandon them.

Mass Effect 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, Batman Arkham city, Assassin Creed 3 are all on the PS360 and as well as each of their prequels. It's good Nintendo only gamers will finally get to play those franchises, but they're not making PS360 owners jump on the Wii-U.

They need to have their first party devs. pumping "Core" games out (less Mario Party & Wii Sports), new franchises / IP's, equal third party support, and more 3rd party exclusives like Bayonetta (still a bit upset about it, but I'll get it sooner or later).

$300 is a bit much for a games console in the eyes of Casual gamers, but I'm sure Nintendo will be able to cut the price down to $250 whenever they fell like it (just like they did the 3DS).

this PS360 owner is getting a Wii U, and will get my multi plats on the Wii U from now. it's obviously a more powerful system.

And what happens when the PS4 and Nextbox come out?

We all know the Wii-U is the most powerful console currently, and those who won't accept it are just being fanboys, but what happens when the PS4 and Nextbox launch with greater hardware? Are you going to just shift with the franchises that you started on Nintendo?

I like to play a franchise the entire way though on one console if at all possible, such as Mass Effect Trilogy on Xbox, DMC games only on PS, etc... I don't like jumping from console to console to play a franchise, and I feel I'm not alone on this.

I will get a Wii-U once it proves itself with a larger library of first party games, continued third party support & exclusives (more ZombiU's), and new original IP's coming from Nintendo. Until then I'm fine with my PS360.

aquamala2320d ago

^^ next gen PS/Xbox hasn't been announced, we could be talking about another 2-3 years for them to be out and another 2-3 years for them to be at the launch price point of wii u. I can have a wii u 2 months from now.

browngamer412321d ago

Yeah I'm sure "casuals" can't wait to start dismembering in Ninja Gaiden 3...

psp2roundup2320d ago

Will game posters stop moaning about hardware prices, this shit ain't cheap! Nintendo isn't a charity, and most folks that can afford big screen TVs and trips to Disneyland can afford a Wii U for their fat kids.

auragenz2320d ago

I like Nintendo and eventually I'll get a Wii-U, but I don't personally know any other Nintendo fan or anyone personally for that matter who thinks what is currently being offerred justifies the price of admission.

It's not like Nintendo is the only show in town, there is plenty of other entertainment options that 350+ could be spent on.

Theyellowflash302320d ago

A 4GB Xbox with Kinect is $299 and thats with no games. The Wii U is $299 and $350. I really don't see the issue here.
