Capcom responds to 20 min DMC install

Capcom US has responded to CVG's report yesterday that PS3 Devil May Cry 4 forces gamers to sit through a mandatory 21 minute install time - with little improvement to load times there after.

Just to be sure, we timed the 5GB install process (which you can't opt-out of) on our PS3 retail version and it clocked in at 21 minutes, 41 seconds.

Not sure why some country charge more for some games... Here in Canada, I never, ever, saw one game on the PS3 that was more expensive than the 360 version. Very strange.

Maybe buying online would be the solution. If the stores who are charging more do not sell games anymore, they will come back to regular prices...

Typical, it was explained in an earlier post here on N4G that the developer is not charging more for the game, but it is the retailer that is deciding to do this. Nothing to do with development time, BD disk usage, or solar winds, the retailer is charging more because they want too and can.

As a PC gamer, I don't see what is wrong with an install time. It's probably just a minor problem that the competition is blowing out of proportion just to be able to have an advantage. Every game I play has an initial install time, no problem. When I installed World of Warcraft last november it took 2 hours to install, so what?

starting with 40 gig , about 7 gig for the operating system .
so now its about 33 gigs. install dmc4 (25 minute wait) and -5gigs.
now thats 28 gigs left. install oblivion (another 25 minutes wait)and -5gigs again.
now thats 22 gigs left.etc......
until you have installed about 5 games on hard drive and no space on the hard drive left for divx xvid movies , themes , songs , etc...

First of all, not all games require an install and some games have it as optional. Uncharted is a great example of a game that doesn't need an HDD install and yet has no loading screens. Epic.

Second, you can just uninstall the game after you're done playing with it. Seriously why keep 6-7 games (pretty rare to have that many in the first place, unless you intentionally go out and buy games that require an hdd install) AND not all games are 5gb as you say ... Warhawk for example was only 900mb?

Last, you have infinite options to fix it - upgrade your hdd, my PS3 is currently a 250gb (originally 60gb model) - I got the HDD for about 90$ (sale).

FYI, I have 14 games (not including PSN games) and only 3 of them require an install (totaling about 10gb) - and 1 game has an optional install (UT3).

It's the only thing people have to whine about to make the ps3 version look bad. I've never seen a ps3 game take that long to install.. Sigma and Oblivion don't even come close to 10 minutes and it's about the same amount to install.

It appears that you are actually getting more time then that. Yes the difference between the 360 and PS3 is only that small amount of time with the load to the HDD. But if you did NOT load to the HDD then the load times on the PS3 are MUCH worse then the XBox 360. (or am I reading this wrong?)It said something like 2 to 3 times the load times without the 21 minute download to the HDD. Because the reading speed of the Bluray? I didn't know that was actually a factor with the Buray disks? Anyone know the actual truth on this subject?

For the record I do like the way Bethesda made it seemless with Oblivion. But didn't Oblivion work on the core system? So why did it need to load to the HDD? Or was that for only the PS3 also?

So, it`s because DMC4 went multiplatform, that game now has INSTALL and Downloading times on PS3.
Otherwise, it would be like Uncharted, NO install and NO downloadings. =)

Also I strongly doubt it takes 20 min. More like 10 min max. Oblivion installs 5 GB on HDD no one complain but now they are complaining.

Also why worry about 40 GB? PS3 you can change HDD whenever you want and need unlike X360.

Actually the XBox 360 people can switch out their HDD whenever the feel too. They just currently only have the 2 options to choose from. But I can transfer my files to my computer if I want to free up space,,, via my media connection. So that pretty much frees up the need to change hard drives and pay extra money to buy extra ones.

But really... 5GB??? WOw... why does Sony use Bluray again? So they can give you more memory on the disk so that you can transfer it to your hard drives??? This is confusing... the logic is lost to me here.

and didn't we purchase the console systems so we wouldn't HAVE to load anything to it? So we could just drop a disk in and play? What ruin have we brought upon ourselves when we take awy the good things that the consoles give us?

I doubt it is because of bluray read speed, it´s 105mb a second. Could be because the dont compromised the game. And exchanging my hdd on my 360 is more than twice as expensive as exchanging on my ps3. I hate that they ms did there own clip on hd, they are so overpriced and i cant go with a 320gb. I hope someone comeup with a way to open the clip ons and exchange the inner ones..

^^^that's a tutorial on how to take apart the HDD on the 360 to reveal the regular SATA drive that's inside.. however, there isn't a tutorial on how to build any harddrive to replace it with yet (nor a way to keep MS from knowing you did this so u don't get banned from XBL)

i actually prefer moving as much onto the hd as possible.. this not only ensures faster loading time but reduces the strain on the blu-ray drive motor, help the laser to last longer and reduces the probabity of disc scratching.

BD is not the fastest driver there is. I am pretty sure, if load times would've been slow(er), we'd have the other articles popping up complaining about the load times. As much as I hate the install, I can accept that. I hate nothing more then long loading times. I could imagine, though, they could have implemented a more elegant streaming solution. Especially because the game is linear anyway. Don't see why they couldn't stream the whole game like Uncharted does. BTW. Uncharted loads, too, if you run backwards (kind a weird effect).

I swear that tape deck was so touchy and temperamental you actually had to leave the room to better your chances of it loading. If you came back too early sometime it would fail just as you walked in.

I know it sounds rubbish, the old mans lost it you say but I swear its true. The day I finally got a Floppy disk drive (back when the disk's were actually floppy) I was in heaven. Quick, reliable. You could put 3 or 4 games on one disk. Awesome.

You guys are drumming up some nasty memories. I had the C-64 with the infamous 1541 disk drive and I remember sitting in front of that system for days typing in all that machine language code out of a magazine and then going through it line by line because the end CRC did not match.

While I do agree with some of the arguments against this being a forced install, I am not sure why it takes so long to install...20+ min to copy 5gig of info off of a BD disk? Even if the info is heavily compressed (which is should not be because of all the space available on the afformentioned BD disc), I can't see the reason for the 20min. I will admit that kind of bothers me.

It would have also been nice to have the option instead of being forced to install just because they know every PS3 owner has a HDD on their system. Oh well!

I actually own a 360 too, and if I was getting a 360 game that required a hdd install, I really wouldn't mind...I mean it's not like every single game out there requires hdd installs, and plus you can delete it whenever you want and it's not going to affect your save files despite which ever system you're on.

Uncharted?...Uncharted certainly does load...but only once...it puts some sort of cache file on the HDD the first time you start up the game (but every time you start, not like DMC4 where you do it once and that is it)...it takes like 3 minutes or so...but then there is zero loading until the game is either over, or you quit for whatever reason...

thats the engine's full streaming support...I agree that its awesome, but it definitely doesn't have zero loading at all...when I would be getting messages about CoD 4, and constantly quitting out of Uncharted to read them...it would get pretty annoying...

21 min is nothing compared to 3 sec every time the game needs to load I'll be playing this game a lot and for a long time and I prefer to wait(get a sandwich) for 20 min before I start to play rather than wait for 3 extra sec during the game and I still have my SNES and I know what Kramer means try playing Chrono Trigger on PS nothing but headache.

loading it on to the hard drive to save loading times is a good idea,but it should have been an option,with say a message on screen telling you the benefits of saving the data on to the hard drive.

I had heard of GOW on the PS2 but never felt compelled to buy the game until a friend of mine that was passing by my neighbor hood sopped by for a couple of minutes with his copy of GOW.i played the game on my system for around 20 minutes before he left and before i knew it i was at my local game store buying a copy.

imagine if i was greeted with a mandatory message to install first.Sorry but that wouldn't have gotten my money because i wouldn't have had the chance to play it.And believe it a few thousand copies of games are sold that way.But if i had the option i will definitely install the copy that i got for myself.

Ok a few facts.

The ps3 after install does load levels etc faster then the 360. Not by much, a few seconds.

But heres the difference.

When a game is this size,5gb, dvd is faster then blu-ray at loading.

When u get upto 7-8gigs they are the same, and thats why i'm guessing you have to install.

Still ppl should have been given the choice either way.

I have seen 360 and PS3 side by side and yes there is a difference in load times. When your playing a game for a few hrs you start to notice the 3 second delay a lot.

I think is a trade off... Just like when DVD was released... Drives werent as fast as today... just like the PS2 DVD drive was very slow compared to other DVD player that came after... PS3 version of blu-ray will be concidered a turtle pretty soon as new blu-ray drive with faster drives hit the market... sadly Sony can't just add a faster drive since all consoles have to have the same base specs... just like the PS1 or PS2 drives never got any faster...

So, what Sony did here? They gave developers more room to but there.. but tided the tube and data is transfered from the PS3 to the hard drive or to memory at a maximun speed for "9MB/Second".. xbox 360 almost 2 times faster...

Now, let's say that Sony releases a 500GB blu-ray disc and developers start using this disc... the fact that in order to use the data it must be read from the disc is disturbing... try transfering 500GB of data at 9MB/Second from one drive to another...

that's like 948 minutes or 15 hours... one of the biggest strength the PS3 has is the ability for games to be bigger... and as many peoples say, "wait until the Developer start learning the true power of the PS3 and start using blu-ray and the cell"... well.. what do you think is going to happen as games grow bigger and bigger... textures grow larger and developers start using this extra space? I don't have to tell you what's going to happen.. you are already seing that... Game installation will continue to grow, and hard drive space requirements will continue to raise.... at least Sony was smart and made the hard drive standard... imagine if someone was stuck with a 20GB PS3 and a future game requires 20GB install and the hard drive couldn't be removed or would be propietary ala xbox 360? the fact is that Sony knew and anticipated this which is why they dropped the 20GB SKU... and are releasing new SKU with larger hard drives...

And yes... some xbox 360 use the hard drive to speed up loading... Obvlibion does it... but it's not an install or mandatory... eventually all games where developer take advantage of blu-ray space will have mandatory install or will be umplayable...

We should get used to the idea that xbox 360 gamers will probably need more than one disc... and PS3 gamers will need larger hard drives and longer inititial installations.. both of these are the result of the technology limitations... DVD9(xbox 360) can't hold as much data as blu-ray(PS3).. and blu-ray(PS3) can't read as fast the DVD9(xbox 360)... not only because of drive speed.. but also because blu-ray have to read more... larger area to read...

I think xbox 360 owners now have a defense against the multiple disc jokes and question, "hah! wasn't blu-ray not needed for games!"... you can't argue that it takes less than 21 minutes to swap 1 disc after 10-15 hours of gameplay... we can say... we are even...

which one is better? depends which system you own... but one thing is certain... if blu-ray wins... I'm sure the next gen consoles will probably have 5X + blu-ray players and this will not be a problem...

Your analogies sometimes don't hold though. If they'd make a 500G disk, they'd very likely also build a drive which can handle that. And thus I think the assumption it would still load at 9MB/s is a bit flawed.

But, well, we know that the BD drive isn't the fastest. However, again, there would be two solutions to the said problem: a) full streaming or b) duplicated sectors on the BD drive.

Because it can hardly allocate more then th 6 or 7GB on the 360s DVD-9, there is a lot empty space on the BD disk. Mirroring sectors can effectively double the BD read throughput. Maybe not to that extend, but it can significantly improve read speed.

You are quoting read speeds of a single layer DVD (Which no new games use) a DL-DVD reads at the same speed as a Blu-ray disc....a word of advice, dont believe everything you read on the internet

the double standards on this website just seem to amaze me, whenever there is a "pc gaming is dead", everybody forgets to include some facts and call games that sold a million a copies a failure but let's not get into that,
most of u die hard ps3 thinking this install thing is a good thing, u r right and wrong at the same time, running a game from hdd can substantially improve performance especially with instances where texture streaming techniques are used, however, now that developers are starting to do this on the norm,

u can't tell me developers will wise up and reduce install time by some magic means, the cell is not going to change a damn thing about install no matter how powerful it is, that is what u call a bottleneck, u also can't say uncharted looked good and didn't have install time so the developers are automatically lazy, those two games run on completely different engines altogether, it's like comparing apples to oranges, for every game engine, sacrifices have to be made to achieve some things, untampered 60 fps was the target for capcom and they did whatever they had to to achieve it, beautiful lush visuals/realistic animations was probably one of the goals of uncharted and hence framerate just had to be playable, different game engine require different things and consume resources differently, also don't say other games installed 5GB in less time, because when u have 5gb of larger files, they copy faster than 5GB of smaller files so that is perfectly normal,

as games get bigger, developers will see no reason not to have mandatory install, it's like the first few games started it so why shouldn't we do the same? it saves a whole lot of trouble, but then when it becomes standard then one question comes to mind, what was the incentive of playing games on consoles? did they have to mimic pc so bad so those incentives could be sacrificed? the more they get closer to being pcs and having all the cool features, the more they have to suffer the consequences, patches, updates, installs all include the things ppl found as headaches on pc gaming and migrated to consoles, it's just the beginning, if console gamers continue to accept such things without complaining like "oh, it's only 20 minutes, i can grab a sandwich or wack off", it is much deeper than 20 minutes, it is a message to other developers that this is a new easier option that conveniences them and inconveniences the gamer, they might even start slapping hard disk requirements for games and who knows how far this fiasco will go,

5 gigs is 5 gigs. I rather have 2 sec of load times and save my HDD space for DLC music and pics. I don't care about bad press for Sony. After tons of games do this a 120 gig HDD will be too small.

Two seconds shaved off of every load sounds pretty significant to me...

When you're playing, two seconds of downtime is an eternity. I mean, the load screens in Oblivion were extremely painful to me but they only took about three to five seconds.

Twenty minutes is pretty long, but to do that once and then be able to better enjoy the entire game is worth it in my opinion. You have to ask yourself honestly: if it was optional on either system, would you do it? Personally, I would. I'm not surprised that forcing a twenty minute install on everyone whether they want it or not has caused a bit of irritability though.

I personally would have installed it on my own had it been optional, but I agree. The main issue is that it isn't optional. Some people don't want to wait around installing a game and I understand that. Capcom's mandatory decision does not make much sense to me. Obviously the director wanted uniformity, but at the cost of alienating some PS3 owners who want to jump right into the game? Big mistake. Most PS3 owners would install the game even if it had been optional, and it is the minority of the bunch, and a bunch of 360 owners who shouldn't even care, that are being extremely vocal.

I wanted to get the 40 gig PS3. But I think that the HDD will be too small. Lets say I get 10 games that require a HDD install I will have to spend $400 plus another $100 just to have a HDD that will reduce loads times of 2 sec. WTF is going on guys. $400 is my limit I will just have to wait on that 120 gig to be $400. Too bad though because I wanted Killzone 2. This should not have been a forced install. Personally I do not have a problem with installing the game data to my drive, I did it with RR7, UT3, and R&C. Drive space is not an issue for me, I have upgraded my drive to a 200gig drive in anticipation for Sony's IPTV service. But I understand why Capcom (lets get that straight boys, this is not Sony's baby, Capcom decided to do this) wants to use the hard drive they KNOW is in every single PS3 built, it should just be an option, not a requirement.

360 Owners aren't fine with the PS3 Owners needing an Install to have lower loading times. I could see if the loading times were no different, but any FASTER is faster and well worth it. Yet 360 owners are fine to not be able to play Burnout Online with their Core systems due to restrictions.

360 Owners also ignore the fact that the best looking console game out, UNCHARTED has no install what so ever and is graphically superior to any title on a console. I guess they like to pretend its not possible on the PS3?360 owners like to pretend that its not up to Developers to choose whether or not they want to do a HDD install.. but as if its Sony making them do it?

360 owners should spend less time being concerned about DMC4, and more concerned that an entire % of their community aren't able to play games fully anymore,yet pay full price. Its a popular idea to make load-free games. You can't do it without a HDD mates.

I think the PS3 owners here need to write capcom a letter of thanks for attempting to provide a better loading-less title on the PS3. We should mention that the OPTION of having inferior loading times MIGHT be preferred by someone who wants to watch longer loading screens, or that cant figure out how to uninstall data months after you are done with this one. Like UT3. I think CAPCOM is going to think that the "backlash" From 360 owners some how speaks for PS3 owners. That just isn't the case.

This is caused by Capcom's not knowing how to use a PS3.

The load speed of a hard drive owns both DVD and BD. Five GB has got to be almost all of the game data; I mean, the 360 version fits on a DVD-9; that means that at most it is 7-8GB's large. If the game is going to install 5 GB to a hard drive it could be made so that it has no load times. Capcom just doesn't know how to do that.

The difference in texture quality isn't a consistent one according to reviewers. Sometimes you can see where the 360 version was compromised here and there in regards to texture seams and overall quality, but it's not like it's noticeable every single moment.

Technically, an install shouldn't even be required, but this is a PC port. Capcom obviously didn't plan ahead for HDD caching, which would get the instantaneous load times on the PS3 version without such a large install at the beginning. Uncharted is proof that you can have gigabytes worth of data stream on and off the hard drive in order to eliminate load times.

if you own a PS3.....it's no big deal that you have to load it.
If you own the 360 version, it's cool because it's the
load free console version.
I'm a 360 owner and it's nice that I won't have to load DMC4 for my console.
But WHO CARES if it takes twenty min.
The ps3 can be left on 24/7 without any worries while folding and what not.
It's no problem to find twenty minutes in there somewhere
to load this awesome game?

While CVG found negligle differences, quoting the aformentioned CVG article:

I put my copy in my PS3, started it loading, and ran to the Burger King up the street from my house. When I got back, it was almost done loading. By the way, this game ROCKS!
