If The Ouya Fails, You (Probably) Won’t Be Getting Your Money Back

Kotaku - The Ouya console might not have been the first video game project to hit it big on Kickstarter, but it's easily the biggest, with around 57,000 people contributing money towards a machine that doesn't even exist yet.

To be honest, it would really suprise me if I got the money back. Until now, They need the money, and it would be a shame if it went REALLY bad for them because it failed. I still can't wait fore more news about Ouya ;)

It would be more surprising if it ever succeeds. Slim chances, but that's just my opinion. I can download any Android game off the internet if I want for free(Of course I don't do this) and this platform would make it really hard for developers to develop games.

... why would I want to risk getting banned or whatever, if games are only 5 bucks orso a piece!?

Personally, I think this has all the potential to be a HUGE success. I don't see it as competition for current-gen consoles or next-gen consoles, but I see it as competition for Media Centers and as competition for XBLA/PSN.

Some people just HAVE to pirate. I don't know that any formal studies have been done or anything, but I know from first hand experience that a pirated DVD can be £4.99 and an official release £5 and some people will go for the one that is £4.99. The picture quality may not be as good, there won't be any special features, but they'll buy it anyway. They'll probably justify it after as well.

Haven't seen it happen with games as much (because people can't out and out sell pirated games like they could in the PS1 era). Still, it's really quite weird.

There is no risk of getting banned at all

Don't expect this to take off.Launching a console is a monumental task on its own, even if its got 3 million to spend in the launch.

I've never understood their business model. If I was a hacker/programer how does buying a Ouya help me when I could build my own system to work off android?

Fishy Fingers4677d ago (Edited 4677d ago )

Sorry what? That's like saying as a game developer why make a console game rather when I could just make my own.

Because of brand awareness, because of the multi million dollar investment required to release it, because the unified hardware sets parameters for you to work with to provide a standardised user end experience, because... I could keep doing this for a while.

And can you even hack an open source system, homebrew is kind of encourage and it main use.

Ouya claims that hackers will but their console to hack it. I'm saying if I have the ability to build a better machine why would I by theirs.

Fishy Fingers4677d ago

Surely that's the point of kickstarter and the gamble you take when you choose to become an "invester". If they could guarantee your stake, they wouldnt of need to be on kickstarter in the first place.

GribbleGrunger4677d ago

Agreed. It would be like demanding your money back because you backed the wrong horse

cleft54677d ago

That is true, but I can assure you that the majority of "investors" don't get this point. For them investing in the Ouya was a guarantee that they would be getting this console. I knew better and chose not throw my money in the garbage on an empty promise.
