Rhode Island Governor Calls Curt Schlling's Project Copernicus 'junk'

Hardcore Gamer Things just keep getting worse for Curt Schilling. After an asset auction last week for Kingdoms of Amalur/Project Copernicus ended with no bidders, it seemed as if there wasn’t much hope to recover anything out of the defunct 38 Studios.

A rose by any other name is still...

zeal0us4209d ago

Guess it's junk when no one buys it at the auction.

Given the MMO was far from finish, so its not surprising it didn't sell.

Bad for gaming, bad for the people who worked at 38 Studios and bad for the taxpayers of Rhode Island.

andron4209d ago

Yeah no winners here. The Governor seems like a tool though...

Roccetarius4209d ago (Edited 4209d ago )

It's only junk to him, because it didn't bring in millions. I hope people learn from this, just so another Rhode Island won't happen.

I think Copernicus had made quite a bit of progress, but obviously not enough for other companies.

While I do believe supporting studios can be a viable source of income for states, blindly throwing money at game developers and hoping they make a profitable game is bad business.

I don't think lawmakers and the decision makers should be hardcore gamers. But they should have an understanding of the business model and the risks and benefits that come with it.

iceman064208d ago

Exactly what I was thinking. This "model" could work. But, just like any OTHER business venture, it has inherent risks. The funny thing is that state governments have wasted MORE on much more risky ventures than video games and not batted an eye. (trying to lure sports teams by building stadiums comes to mind) In the end, most of the lawmakers and decision makers in government have very little clue about what they do. It's basically an agenda based quid pro quo system designed to manipulate their individual paths to the next level of government...rinse and repeat ad nauseam.

R.A. Salvatore on Neverwinter and 38 Studios | GRTV interview

GRTV talked to R.A. Salvatore about Forgotten Realms, his books that tie in with Neverwinter, and the demise of 38 Studios.

"The IP is going to come up for sale. I hope somebody buys it. I hope they contact me and want me to come back and do some work with it. I think it's awesome, and I'm not just saying that cause I wrote it. The parts I wrote - great - but the work the team did... the love they poured into that expanding this hundreds and hundreds of pages in the wiki - just amazing stuff was coming out of that team."
