What else can Nintendo do with the Mario series that they haven't done already? Are the games really becoming repetitive and maybe even boring?
I don't think so. Fans and critics loved the blend of 2D and 3D gameplay of Super Mario 3D Land, they adored the gravity gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, they enjoyed the multiplayer mayhem of New Super Mario Bros. Wii (some even compare it to the greatness of World and Bros. 3, which I'd agree), etc. And how is any of that "lacking originality"? You might not have liked them, but that doesn't mean they had zero originality. One game that plays it safe gets released (NSMB2, even though its level design is excellent), and suddenly we have articles like this. It's weird how it just takes one game for that to happen after so many wonderful ones, and how everyone piles on easy targets. Thankfully, the opinion that past DS, 3DS, and Wii Mario games being "lackluster, repetitive" and lacking originality is a minority opinion. You are entitled to it. Most disagree, however.
Actually I felt the same thing was happening to the "original" New Super Mario Brothers for the DS and Wii. I think it's been going on ever since the DS games. But I appreciate your honest feedback. *sigh* that's not the point. The point is that I'm surprised at how fast they're making a NEW game right after they came out with Super Mario Land 3D for the 3DS. The question was rhetorical.
No problem. But I just read it again, and this caught me off guard: "now they are already making New Super Mario Brothers 2 also for the 3DS and Wii U?" Uh, I don't see how a self-proclaimed "huge Mario fan" and "Nintendo diehard" doesn't know that NSMB2 is for 3DS and New Super Mario Bros. U is the Wii U game. Two completely different games. I'm not a "Nintendo diehard" and even I know that. :/
Nintendo is running out of ideas and lack the innovation in design they once had. They're just adding a power up, increasing the number of coins and making one Goomba bigger than the other. Even the music is exactly the same. I honestly couldn't tell you which NewSMB levels or music belong to which NewSMB game. BUT I could tell you exactly which levels and music belong to which older Mario games and to which worlds. Why? Look at classics like SMB1, 3, World, World 2. Each unique. Now look at NewSMB1, Wii, 2, Wii U. No personality.
@shinmater, Using that logic all Halos are the same, All Uncharted games are the same, All LBP games are the same. Do you also think they should go away? Probably not.
What kind of logic are you using!? Level design, story and music in Uncharted, Halo and LBP are different from game to game. You made absolutely no sense. Again, look at classics like SMB1, SMB3, World, World 2. Level design, art direction, music, etc. All unique. Now look at NewSMB1, 2, Wii, Wii U. All the same. I never said it needed to go away. Nintendo just needs to start trying again.
He's always welcome at my house.
As a diehard fan, I agree!
Folks, I'm not trying to offend anyone with this piece. You're free to disagree with me. Just don't call me a hater or say that I'm not a "true fan" or anything like that.
I can't speak for anyone but myself. And I politely disagree. Mario is the face of gaming like how Mickey Mouse is the face of traditional animation. I see no reason why Mario should go away unless people (and I mean a LOT of people) truly don't want Mario games anymore.
Everyone has an opinion, but on the internet, you can't
Yes everyone has opinions but not all of them are valid ones If I said it was my opinion that the Sun was purple and the sky was Orange is that valid? No because the FACT is the Sun is not purple and the sky is not Orange. People seem to be hating on Mario for reasons that also apply to many other franchises. 4 games since 2005 and all are the same. Well 5 Uncharted games since 2007 and they all play and look the same. If you think one should go away but the other should pump out 10 more games then your opinion isnt really valid. take any known sports franchise in gaming and they all have yearly releases, yet if you cant wait for the next Madden and still think 4 mario games in 8 years is too much then your opinion isnt really valid. If your opinion changes based on a company name then your opinion isnt really valid IMO.
As long as people are buying the games then clearly they don't think he is boring. If you think he is then thats fine but too many people love his games and its very selfish of you to deny them the games just because your sick of them.
If you dont like it dont buy it.
as long as they keep coming out with innovative 3d and 2d classic mario games ill buy them...the only thing that sucks about mario games and first party nintendo games in general is that there is never a price drop
It's been over 25 years since SMB for the NES, so there are definitely people who are now tired with Mario (especially since NSMB2 and NSMBU are basically the same game, and have the same gameplay from old Mario games). However, as long as Nintendo tries to create something new and unique with Mario (like Galaxy), then I and other Mario fans will buy it.
After seeing a ton of games with the same character i start to get bored of it. Like for example if they made 10 uncharted games i would get bored of playing as Nathan Drake for example. But hey Mario is THE Nintendo character which is why he isn´t going anywhere because there are too many kids who love him. Seriously what 5 year doesn´t love Mario, Lugi, Pokemon, Link, Kirby etc. P.S Im not saying that Nintendo is for kids but children are the biggest demographic that they have.
Nintendo did Mario Galaxy, one of the very, very few flawless games this generation, decades after Mario made his debut. Play Mario Galaxy and you will see that Mario has still got it now more than ever.
It's time for Super Luigi Galaxy.
They have that already.
I don't think he's overstayed his welcome - but I think Nintendo haven't done enough innovative stuff with him, and have overused him. When Mario went from 2D to 3D on N64 it was a defining moment in gaming. He also appeared in very few N64 games. Since then it seems he's just been rehashed in decent but not innovative games, and has appeared in far too many games.
we want more MARIO PLZ
I think they should just stick to the normal Mario games and leave the Mario + whatever sport alone.
Let Mario rest for a while and use that time to come up with something new.
Nope. Super Mario Galaxy 1+2: highest rated games this gen on any format. New Super Mario Bros Wii: sold more than any game on PS360. NSMB2: already outsold the Vita in Japan.
Wow....let me guess from Rant ? I check and confirm " yes it is from rant".. Proceed to not give them hits. This is just too many articles in a row now... You can't even argue it ...they are outright lying and making things up just to get hits. People like them are what is wrong with the world today. They have no values....no morals....no integrity at all. I can't wait for the day this site has to close.... I only heard of them a couple days ago through here and every article I read was just a bunch of BS written by some butthurt dude who is NOT intelligent at all. Somebody needs to make a F U Rant gaming facebook back.
mario...a legend of videogames, games that sets standards for other platformers..these articles must be coming from sony and microsoft fanboys who knows there is no way to overcome nintendo classics...since sony and ms cannot produce their own game that register with everyone...nintendo will always have an advantage...and mario need to stay around forever so i can introduce my 3 year old daughter to it....soon enough
