yea ill buy it ... fuck a publisher ..

good article , good read ... i kinda wondered this in the past and it all boiled down to not having enough money to market yourself.. but as he said in the article.. we have social media.. and if its good... then the word will spread itself

a good game will sell itself..

ATi_Elite2776d ago

The PC has shown that you can make a kick butt game and publish it yourself or use Steam!

I see a future where Dev studios have all the power and Publishers are extinct!!

Remedy self published Alan Wake PC and it work out great for them.

I think you mean, "had Steam, an online digital retailer, publish it"
Minecraft was self-published.

Sorry, but if you still need to pay someone else to distribute the game for you, you aren't "self-published" - being digital doesn't change that.

SilentNegotiator

Steam does not publish peoples games. It is a store to buy games... So if I make a game and sell it on steam it is independent.

If he decides to bring it over to my platform of choice he better make sure somebody is handling the quality control because I don't play buggy games...I leave that to the Pc enthusiast...

SilentNegotiator2774d ago

What do publishers do? Distribute games and promote them.

What do developers unlike those of Minecraft need Steam for? Distribution and promotion.

I like how some devs self-publish on Steam.

SilentNegotiator2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Right.... "self-published"

Just published through an online digital retailer.

So Valve published Skyrim?

I wonder where this guy will be when the industry crashes because so many would-be developers that have no idea spend hundreds-of-thousands and even millions to create crap games that flood the market.

What bananas like this guy don't realise is that, while atm the F2P and publisher-free business models are working well, the climate is dictating it because there is uncertainty when it comes to digital distribution and monetizing the online audience.

Publishers are a necessary evil that instill quality control. Even the model that developers like this guy rely on will be flooded by people that also JUST want to make money.

The hostility towards publishers is more an anti-corporate thing more than anything, which is fair enough, but this guy will be begging at the feet of publishers when in 5-10 years everything is digital and people are more cautious as to how they spend their money online, even with cheap games.

"Publishers are a necessary evil that instill quality control."

Could've fooled me. Big publishers appear to be pissing in most good ideas rather than displaying any proper quality control.

Looking at kickstarter, it would seem that people are even more willing to give developers money directly, rather than involving publishers.

The only advantage publishers might give is advertising, which isn't as important when it comes to digital games, aside from that, I don't see why they'd have to beg at the feet of any publisher.

GamerToons2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

It's a stupid statement hear me out.

Valve for example... When sold through steam becomes your publisher.

Hell even if you sell your product yourself YOU ARE THE PUBLISHER.

EA became a publisher and was dev and publisher and still is...

Bladesfist2775d ago

Steam is a store not a publisher. Get your facts straight.
