Why Playstation Plus is a great deal and every PS3 owner needs it

Playstation Plus was greeted with a wave of confusion and hesitation when it had its debut in the middle of 2010. Since then, it has easily become the best value in gaming for its 90 Million current members. Free games, early exclusive betas, and heavy discounts make up the most of the service, but it extends far beyond that.

it is a good deal and ill probbaly buy it when more vita support is added...but i disagree that every ps3 owner needs it.

Mintyrebel2782d ago

I couldn't agree more, every gamer's needs are different therefore you can't say that categorically EVERY Playstation 3 owner needs it.

ddurand12782d ago

exactly.

free games are great, but if you dont have the time to play and they sit and sit and sit...what good are they?

same with discounts. what good are they if i cant/dont want those games?

MuleKick2782d ago

PS+ is a great value. There's no question about that. But, I won't say its for everyone. The free games are great but gamers like myself already own alot of those games. I was able to discover some games that I'd completely ignored so it has paid off. I'd say if you're in a gaming drout, the $50 is well worth it. You'll find something worth your time and money.

gaffyh2782d ago

Nobody NEEDS it, and that's the great thing about PS+, it is completely optional. I recommend that if something comes up in a particular that you haven't played, then buy a year subscription. If not, then it's not really necessary for you. For me though, I've not played Borderlands, Red Dead or Just Cause 2 on my PS3, or a lot of the PSN titles, so it was well worth getting. I'm actually thinking of getting a stacked PS+ subscription on September 5th due to the 25% discount as well.

This is in stark contrast to my first year's subscription, which I felt started really good, but ended with games that I already owned, so I didn't feel the need to re-subscribe until they announced the changes to the service at E3.

Stansolo2782d ago

Are the free games only yours while you are member of playstation plus?
Do you lose these games when you come out of playstation plus?
Can someone tell me please.

ddurand12782d ago

yes. when you stop paying for ps+ you lose the games given to you.

you keep the ones downloaded at a discount price, as far as i know however

RXL2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

everybody loves and needs free/full titled games..

"i can't afford it"

but you buy games right?

well with PS+ they give you free games...soooooo...?

and they actually give you more free games that's worth ten times the price of subscription...

who does that?!

that'd be like subscribing to playstation plus...and getting ten free games...

that's the best analogy there is..

there is no better analogy to use

because no one else is doing it!!

edit..why the disagree?...am i wrong?...no..i am not...so show yourself and explain your actions sir/women/child/baby

ChunkyLover532782d ago

Some people buy games, but they buy games they know they want. With PS+, even though I think its a good deal, you don't really know what games you'll end up with.

RXL2782d ago

yeah you do because there is a section that shows you what free games there are lol..

im not disagreeing with you..just saying..

Outside_ofthe_Box2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

So? It's free. If you're someone that is willing to try out games that you normally wouldn't buy then PS+ is definitely for you. But if you're the the type that looks for specific games and buys specific games then PS+ isn't necessarily for you because like you said you don't know what games will be available.

Good thing you aren't forced to buy it right?

ddurand12782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

@RXL

you are wrong. im glad it works for you but its not that way for everyone.

not everyoen is interested in a wide variety of games. I have some friends that play 2 games and thats it. what good does ps+ do for them?

if i dont have time to play hours of games, what good are games sitting in my HD? Id rtaher spend 60$ on a game that ill play more.

PS+ is a waste of moeny in both instances. your opinion isnt the end all be all opinion.

grow up.

RXL2782d ago

grow up because i find it a good reason to have more video games?

that's retarded...

lol..

i only play about two or three games myself...but it would be nice to try something out..

plus you get discounts on certain game downloads so what ever "two games" your friends are playing im sure they'll have downloadable content..why not get it for cheaper?..

is it for everyone?...

obviously no...

but for gamers?...yes...

HakatoX2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

@ddurand1
300.00 for two games? you're kidding, right?

ddurand12781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

i have freinds that only play madden and COD.

and i know im not the only one.

@RXL

grow up because youre opinion isnt the most important and end all opinion out there.

dragonyght2782d ago

more like with the $50 you get $1000+ wroth of games for a year.
no body cant argue against those number even if you are dirt poor

RXL2782d ago

by the amount of disagrees we're getting...they can argue against it lol

*shrugs*

i just wanna game!

deletingthis346753342782d ago

No, you rent the games for the length of your subscription. They are not free when you are still required to pay in the future to continue playing the games. Don't be delusional.

suicidalblues2782d ago

That rant is played out. Using that theory, every 360 owner only gets half a game unless they continue to pay for their gold subscription.

But you don't want to hear that, do you?

Hicken2782d ago

Oh, come on. Not that crap again. Everybody knows that, and it's actually not true for 100% of games.

Look at it this way: you pay for Plus at $50 for a year, and get... let's say, ten games that average out to be $20 apiece. You've "rented" $100 worth of games for half that price. Next year, you spend another $50, and get another ten games at the same average price: $100 has gotten you $200 in games.

This continues each year that you have Plus for, say, ten years. You've spent $500 on Plus, and you've gotten $1000 dollars worth of games. And unlike a rental, you still have access to all hundred games.

That's assuming an average of $20 a game, but a lot of the titles they're "giving away" retail for two or three times that WITHOUT Plus. That's also assuming you only "rent" ten games a year, but that number is actually likely to be up around the 15-20 mark, if not higher.

We're not even gonna get into the other features that come with Plus; a percentage of that $50 must go towards cloud saves, automatic updates, discounts on games and the like, early access to betas, and other things. With all the other stuff you get from the service, you're not even spending $50 on the games, which means the value on that side of the equation goes up.

deletingthis346753342782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

You are barking up the wrong tree. I don't even have an Xbox Live account, let alone a Gold subscription. You are accusing me of being some Xbox fanboy which you just failed at doing. Where did you get that from? That was retarded and you don't even realize it.

@Hicken, yeah and if you don't pay for PS+ anymore you lose access to the content you paid $500 for. Oops, did you say $500 for $1000 worth of games? You just told me you are paying %50 for the games. That isn't free. Thanks for telling me everything I know about PS+ and proving my point in the process.

Outside_ofthe_Box2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

It's free *with* subscription. You aren't paying in the future to continue playing the games, you are paying in the future to continue being a member. Like suicidalblues brought up, that's like saying 360 owners pay $60 for half a game if said game has a multiplayer.

DigitalRaptor2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

So well said Hicken.

This year alone: LittleBigPlanet 2, MotorStorm Apocalypse, inFamous 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Darksiders, Rock of Ages, Shank 2, Back to the Future: The Game, Shift 2 Unleashed, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Trine 2, Renegade Ops, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, Saints Row 2, Oddworld: Strangers Wrath, Dead Space 2, Just Cause 2, Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption.

That doesn't even cover everything, and then there's loads more from last year that's activated on my account. My first year of Plus ends at the end of this month and I don't even have to think about re-subscribing. The promise of more high profile games, PS Vita content, cloud save data increase to 1GB, continued discounts, early betas, and looming Gaikai streaming.

Some games are actually free too such as Plants vs. Zombies, due to the license not expiring when your subscription ends, which adds to the already immense value. Getting PvZ for free (to keep), had already paid for more than 1/3 of my yearly subscription. At the time, PvZ was £11.99, so the rest of that Plus content for only £20 for a year is a no brainer.

im getting it for the yellow plus sign, its sexy.

ClydeRadcliffe2782d ago

90 million members? How does that work? As of March there were only 64m PS3s sold...

JAM_brz2782d ago

lol

maybe if you have more than 1 Plus account in two different countries... but I think that only a few people do that.

raWfodog2782d ago

Maybe they're counting the individual accounts on each unit. I don't have PS+ but maybe someone else can confirm whether the sub-accounts have access to PS+ features when the master account signs up.

PirateThom2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

PSP, Vita and Sony's websites all use the same SEN/PSN log in.

I think they may be mixing up PSN and PS+.

JAM_brz2782d ago

"Plus" it´s a must buy for the most part of gamers. You have more than you paid for. And thats itself its a good reason for you to have Plus. Besides that, you have a lot of discounts, early beta acess, Full 60 minutes of trial... and the best, free games. 3 cycles games per month... for me its worth a lot!

Moby-Royale2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

For me, one single game made it worth the investment.

On a whim I purchased a three-month subscription. At which time I downloaded Just Cause 2. It's a game that I hear people talk about, but would probably never make the plunge to buy.

I have put thirty hours into it and I have only done three missions(all of my time has been spent discovering, and completing locations)

Wow... it has been a long time since I've enjoyed pure gameplay this much.

Soooo... the fact that for the price of this game I get Gotham City Imposters,(which I like) episode two of The Walking Dead(I had already purchased episode one, and I love it), InFamous 2(I'll get to it eventually), Pac-man Championship DX(like just cause 2, another game I would have never bought but I am so thrilled that I have it), Ratchet and Clank All 4 One(will be playing with my roommate), ect.

My point.... for me it is a steal as I had not played any of these games.

I can understand that somebody else who has more expendable income, and subsequently plays more games than I, surely wouldn't get as much value as I have.

The way I look at it? I bought Just Cause 2, and now I'm getting all of these other games.

*typographical error(s) yo

JAM_brz2782d ago

I bought nearly as the same way as you. But the games that really made me make a Plus subscription was LittleBigPlanet2 and Infamous 2, games that I´d buy in the future. I thought: "this games will worth, and the rest that will launch will be "profit".

Moby-Royale2782d ago

Yes!

Another prime example is Ratchet and Clank. I loved the ones on Playstation 2, but I just never saw myself buying it. I looked on the store, its listed for what? $49.99? Goodness gracious that is a bargain lol.

I'm glad you mentioned LBP2 because I forgot to mention it(too many titles to remember is not a bad problem to have lol). LBP2, I'm not particularly interested in the base gameplay myself. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see some of that insanely creative, is it UGC? Idk. The stuff that other people made! ;)

Idk. It's just fun seeing other peoples' creativity.
