Big Three Quarterly Shipment Progress Update

Sony just announced its Q3 results for PS3 hardware shipments worldwide. In the quarter, which runs from October to December 2007, Sony shipped 4.9 million PS3s to retail. That compares to 4.3 million Xbox 360s shipped worldwide during the same time frame. Nintendo shipped 6.96 million Wiis worldwide in the same quarter.

VG Chartz compares the lifetime shipment totals for the big three since all the consoles were available. All numbers are in millions, and the numbers are lifetime-to-date shipment to retail figures worldwide.

PS3 is catching up way too fast. I can almost see PS3 surpassing X360 sales by the end of this year.

....the PS3 overtaking the 360 in install base anytime soon. But the fact that the PS3 is outselling the 360 in worldwide sales albeit a very small margin, it will eventually catch up. I can see PS3 sales picking up though throughout the year when Sony's heavy hitters hit the shelves.

Wii's shipments and demand is what you should be impressed with. The other two companies shipments are so close one could say one company doesn't wan't too many consoles laying around retailers vs the other.

A price drop and a few games will cancel out the current" less then 20k a week edge(80k a month). lol

Once the 360 is around $200 it won't matter what games are out. It will be hard for Sony to compete with the mass market bargon shoppers waiting to mass adopt.

First of, this is vgchartz that from time to time is off up to 20%. Which means that it potentially closer.

However, MS has already a large user base and in order for Sony to take advantage of this they have to sell a lot more than MS over a long period of time. A 500-600k more each quarter would take 2-3 years to match MS units sold.

For MS though, that Sony outsold them despite the excellent software selection and given its momentum is not exactly good news. MS needs to lower price and continue to bundle more games AND START MARKETING THEIR PRODUCTS AS COOL AND CUTTING EDGE!!! Evertime I look at Sony designed products, packaging and comercials, I see sexy and cool. You look at MS and sometimes I can't even figure out what the heck they are trying to say with their adverts. To top that, many people in Europe are not even aware of the wonders of Xbox Live! MS strength is in Live! Sony is in brand recognition.

I agree that a reduction in the 360 MSRP is needed, and not just a small one. Right now, although the 360 is still cheaper than the PS3, the price gap is not as wide as the perceived value gap in the eyes of most consumers. There is no question that the PS3 hardware has a better reputation for quality and offers more functionality beyond gaming. Recent trends seem to indicate that they are willing to pay more for the PS3 because they believe they get more. Therefore, if MS wants to make price a factor in its favor once again, it will have to restore the price differential at least to what it was when the PS3 still cost $600.00. And that may not even be enough. Also, hardware improvements won't hurt either.

Of course the xbox 360 did so well its 1st year... they had no "next-gen" competition. Now that Sony's finally here we see things already shifting. The ps3 isn't even a year old in europe yet, either. That's scary to think in less than a year it's almost sitting where the xbox 360 is in 2 years.

360 isnt gaming next mecca....neither is ps3 at the moment its the wii right now but in the end playstion will rise again
