"Kickstarter. Prior to Tim Schafer and Double Fine's adventure (pun intended) with the crowd funding website, it wasn't that well known in gaming circles. The site, which launched in 2008, saw Schafer's proposed adventure game garner over $3 million from fans. It's a novel concept, that definitely has a place. When publishers aren't backing developers' particular ideas, "Take it to Kickstarter! The fans will help!". Of course, this is only true for a number of projects. Double Fine's built-in fanbase helped to fund Reds - the game's codename, but that isn't the case for all developers seeking money through the site..."

Life doesn't always equal success and I'd rather kick starter to the current system. Admittedly I'm sure some morons would think they have the right to dictate development but legally that's nought. Also metacritic bombings keep getting thrown around like it's some super evil thing gamers do, and don't get me wrong it's really stupid, but it's just that. Stupid - oooooh no they're flooding a review site with bad reviews! Who cares. If you're so God Damn stupid that mass effect 3's box office AAA status got over ridden by bad reviews then.... Jesus Christ were you born in the Delorean's trunk or something? Who the fuck didn't hear about mass effect 3's metacritic saga!?
Anyway - point is gamers may throw a wobbly over kickstarter but a) money and potential sales is the main piece of leverage in both scenarios. (Angry forum posts don't really mean squat), and B) a false sense of entitlement is something us gamers will always have, whether or not we contributed to the funding. So can WE at least decide which games get funded democratically because Obsidian got it's bonus cut because it didn't make 90% on metacritic. You know what that tells me? It tells me that the people currently making that decision either just don't give a flying fuck about the medium or had their brains petrified and put on display a loooooong time ago.
Oh, I think kickstarter is a tremendous success. You relieve a few thousand strangers of their currency, safe in the knowledge that said transactions are protected by the site's Terms of Use - Terms which quite clearly state you could blow it all on coke and courvoisier while never working on your pet project for one minute, with no fear of the consequences.
