Touch Arcade: We gave Darkside [Free] a quick look early last week and were quite pleased with our initial experiences. After giving the game a run through its paces, it’s obvious that beauty in this arcade dual-stick shooter is far more than simply skin-deep. An excellent implementation of a classic arcade genre, extremely fair shareware model, and of course amazing visuals should leave iOS gamers with very little reason not to check out this gem.
The arcade shooter is a style of game that I love, but which went out of fashion in the last decade as improved hardware led most developers to embrace the immersion of a first-person or third-person perspective.
Fortunately, the constraints of mobile hardware have caused resurgence in the genre, and there’s a hoard of titles to choose from. Perhaps too many, as with tower defense, picking out the really great games from the schlock isn’t easy. STP: This twin-stick shooter doesn’t go to the “dark side” as far as freemium games are concerned, and it’s a fun play at that.
AppSpy: A very beautiful looking twin stick shooter that offers its players a fun experience for free, and an expanded experience if you want to pay the ninety nine cent fee.
