Average gamer is 30, while women make up 30% of all gamers over 18.

While it might surprise you that the average video gamer these days is 30 years old, the even bigger surprise is that women over the age of 18, make up over 30% of game consumers. A recent report from the ESA - Entertainment Software Association - has detailed all the numbers and percentages.

The story is too old to be commented.
NastyLeftHook03281d ago

Wow that was very interesting.

Anon19743281d ago

Wait. Didn't the ESA just last month say the average gamer age was 37? I've found it's historically been whatever age I am give or take (I'm currently 38). What gives?

longcat3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

If you look at the ESA methodology for collecting stats in gaming (or lack thereof), it is very hard to take anything they say seriously.

this is FAR from scientific, useful or reliable.

You dont even know how they defined a "gamer" or how they went about selecting the 2000 families that are supposed to be representative of the entire population. That's pretty basic

Stansolo3281d ago

Where's the 40+, I'm 47 and been playing video games for 30 years. Lol.

Jazz41083281d ago

41 year old gamer from Las Vegas here.

slimpickens3281d ago

Im 29 but from keeping up with statistics over the past yrs I do believe the average gamer is 39.

Sgt_Slaughter3280d ago

Would 17 be young in this situation? Lol

Campy da Camper3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

double post.

Campy da Camper3280d ago (Edited 3280d ago )

I'm 39 and my amount of gaming has not really dropped but what I game sure has changed. I never play FFS online anymore and I know for a fact I logged hundreds of hours into Rainbow Six Black Arrow/Vegas, COD, etc.

Now, I am a SP gamer. I play games that are well made and speak to me. I prefer the Splinter Cell, Metal Gear stuff. Oblivion was what really changed it for me, I think. I got so lost in such a well crafted world that I realized I enjoy that type WAY more than online yelling and screaming. Then Fallout sold me.

Now, I am going through back catalogs and wait for games like Bioshock Infinite, AC3, etc.

EDIT: the HD remake of Splinter Cell is awesome. I forgot how much I like the series before the Double Agent downfall and demise of the series.

xXBlondieVanHarlowXx3281d ago

Someone who games averagely duh!!!

JBSleek3280d ago

You aren't familiar with Statistics are you? Missed the class?

Your personal experience has nothing to do with Stats as it is a sum of averages not the sum of oneself.

Tapewurm3280d ago

42 here, been gaming since pong and the atari 2600. It is a great hobby for "me time" when the kids and wife are asleep or just away :) We do game together as well, but the wife is definitely not a gamer....she plays when we make her lol

Bobby Kotex3280d ago

This shouldn't surprise anyone, and I think the average gamer is even older than 30.

Cool, at least now if you play a lot of video games you won't look like a huge nerd to girls haha

LOGICWINS3281d ago

If girls view people who play a lot of video games as nerds, then their the ones with the problem. Gaming is a hobby, no different than constantly posting pictures of yourself half naked in a provocative pose because your self-esteem is so low that you crave attention (the story of most of the girls on my FB Newsfeed)

Wingsfan243281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

Lol, most of the girls I know could care less if you play video games, I was just kidding around. Most everyone I know plays video games nowadays, even if it's just one game. Hell the girls will usually jump right in and play the game with me hahaha.

LOGICWINS3281d ago

WOW lucky you! When I have a girl come over, the LAST thing they wanna do is play videogames lol. Maybe I just have sucky girlfriends...which isn't always a bad thing if ya know what I mean ;)

DasBunker3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

The ones who started with atari/early NES in their childhood should be around that age...

I wonder if the women numbers in the article represent "gamer girls" who play angry birds on their phones and mom's who buy games to their kids.

What i mean is if these moms buying games are considered women consumers.

2pacalypsenow3281d ago

if your mom buys your games your still a gamer

nevin13281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

Yea I question that too. But I will say games like MGO and UC2/3 I have encountered many female players.

"quite a lot higher than gaming’s traditional demographic, the under-18 male, at 18%."

Not sure I agree with this though. There was alot of older gamers playing street fighter and mortal kombat.

GTRrocker6663281d ago

I actually encounter many female tags on Mortal kombat online ps3

jessupj3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

I pondered the same question.

In total, 47% of gamers are apparently female, but how do they define a "gamer"? Unfortunate the PDF document doesn't say, however...

42% of online games that are played are card games, puzzles, board game, etc. In other words, casual games. I'll say that again, casual games. And 42% in a big chunk.

Not only that but 33% of gamers play on their smart phone, while another 25% game of their hand-helds

If 47% of gamers are female, why do I barely see any females in BF3 or any other online game I play? Are they just all hiding out in skyrim or uncharted?

I know it's a big assumption, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these "female gamers" made up a lot of said casual game and smart phone statistic.

I don't want to sound elitist, but people that just play on their smart phone are not in the same league as me. I play a bit of golf every now and then, but should I be compared to Tiger Woods? Of course not, but it's the same principle here. I'm sick of these surveys that consider me to be the same as the soccer mum that plays wii kart once a week.

I would really love to know how many actual gamers are female. Honest to god I would love it if it was really 47%.

Brosy3280d ago

My whole immediate family games. My mom plays Mafia Wars, My dad plays Cityville, My stepmom likes internet hearts, My 17 year old sister has a 360 and games on Live hardcore, my youngest brother has a 360 and games on Live, my brother is a hardcore PC gamer with WOW and The Old Republic, my son games on the 360 I bought him hardcore, and of course I game on my 360 on Live.

I started gaming with an Atari before I moved on to an NES my parents got me when it first came out. I am now 34 soon to be 35.

PLAYER50953281d ago

Damn, arent you a little old to be playing video games

Moby-Royale3281d ago

Damn, aren't you a little................ stinky

(note that in paying homage to you I left off the question mark)

AO1JMM3281d ago (Edited 3281d ago )

Hell no! And your statement is damn ignorant. Exactly what age group do you think makes the damn videogames?

jessupj3281d ago

Aren't you a little ignorant to be making statements like that?

Seriously, gtfo if you're going to say stupid sh*t like that.

Redgehammer3281d ago

Are you going to give up video games as you age? I know I have not, nor will I give up my lifelong hobby, and I am 42.

GTRrocker6663281d ago

I'm 28. Ill be gaming when I am 82

ian723281d ago

I'm 40 and loving playing games more now than ever.

47 and still love playing, and I can still play well online.

Psychotica3281d ago

I will be 46 next month and play all the time. Better than just watching TV.

teedogg803281d ago

I also started out with an Atari 2600 and I'm 32. Isn't it just amazing how far games have come? When you started out gaming in those days it just makes you appreciate it more.

JAMurida3280d ago

I would say 30-35 is a good average for male gamers. I started on Sega Genesis to what we have now, (just turned 23). I know that playing SOCOM 1 and 2 online back then, most of the people I ran into and who were in my clan were in mid 20's, while I was what... like 15 I think at the time. So I would say it's on spot.
