A Cure For The Achievement Whore

From eGamer:

"It’s a well-established fact amongst the writers of this glorious website, you guys the readers who visit each day (or whenever, I suppose) and pretty much anyone else who knows me with the exception of that weird lady across the road who stares at me each time I walk outside (although I can’t really blame her, considering ‘outside’ is a mystical land to me), that I am an Achievement Whore. Or ‘Pathological Completionist,’ as a friend puts it."

I used to be this way until the perfect storm hit and I realized how ridiculous it all is. First, lost planet 2 came out, I got a job in which I work alot, & rpgs, my favorite genre by far made a comeback. Now, I still play to try and get all the trophies/achievements but it's not a priority anymore. I am not going to skip the release of a great game to play some tacked on multilateral before the servers are shut down or boost for 40 hours. Never again. And if I get glitched, which I always seem to, it's just too bad now. There are too many great games and too many that take 100+ hours to get through to worry about these arbitrary awards. And my friends are worse than me so there's nothing for me to accomplish aside from always trying to keep up with gamers that work little and don't play rpgs. All three of my friends platted lost planet 2 but did most of it while I was working and sleeping. It's where I decided to cut ties. Now, I have like 5 unfinished games right now. Soon it will be fall again and I will have a choice. Go back and finish them or move on. Well, bring on dishonored, borderlands and AC3. They are to good to miss. I probably would have been able to finish most games still but 275 hours in skyrim, 100+ in KoA and 100+ so far in Dragons Dogma and I am slot happier than I would have been with a platinum trophy for lost planet 2.

I do enjoy collecting achievements. I don't see how it's different than working towards the highscore on an arcade game where people used to spend many hours and money for it to most likely be reset or beaten. You would go back to keep trying to beat those highscores and you wouldn't accomplish anything.

I wouldn't go out and buy a bunch of games that are cheap just to get an easy 1000g for each game.

There are a good number of games coming in the next few months and Im going to get them because they look good and I am looking forward to playing them. I have checked the achievements for these games because I do enjoy going for them.
