While everyone is talking about how much they want to play Battlefield 4, it's announcement today by EA has big ramifications on when next generation game systems like the next Xbox or Playstation 4 will release.

Who says that every big game will release on the Xbox.next and PS4 in the early days after release.

The PS3 and 360 will by that time likely have a combined install base well north of 160 million. Is it worth the effort to release on the next gen consoles when they will likely have less than a 30 million combined install base?

Many developers will decide it's worth it but don't be surprised when some games don't make it to the new consoles in their first year of release.

Still, it's unlikely a PS4 or 360 is coming next year. They usually announce things like that in Spring, or at E3 in the summer. Then need a year to prepare and build up hype. The earliest I can see it being is 2014, considering there was not even a hint of the PS3 or 360 slowing down at this years E3, nor a mention of next gen consoles/games.

I don't like it either, but there's still some juice left in the PS3. The 360 however, needs more exclusives. Maybe that's why so many Xbox guys are even more weary of the current gen than the PS3 guys.

Microsoft needs to give current customers a reason to stick things through with the 360, if their not at least gonna give them the 720 in coming months.

I've been saying it for months: new consoles will launch Fall 2014. Here's what I hope happens:

PC beta - Fall 2013
PC release - Spring 2014 (2.5 years after BF3)
Console release - Nov/Dec 2014 (on next gen consoles)

We already know Ready at Dawn's making a next-gen third-person action-adventure game (why do I suspect something... God of War-like?), Guerrilla's working on two titles, one of which is Killzone 4, Naughty Dog has the entire team of Uncharted doing something, and Insomniac must be doing another game besides R&C: Full Frontal Assault. Evolution Studios is probably making another MotorStorm, MediaMolecule is likely making another game as well.

I can't imagine the PS4 not having a great launch lineup.

I think EA probably saw that Activision was going to release a COD game on PS3/PS4, Xbox 360/720 and the Wii U + PC. That is far too big a pie for Activision to eat alone.

In addition, DICE has said that Frostbite 2 was made with Next-gen hardware in mind. That, and they've managed to optimize it for current hardware too, as seen in BF3.

So, it may work out well for them, as they'll have a very good engine that will allow them to port the game on both next, and current, gen hardware.

Keep in mind that not everyone adopts early with new console releases. There are like close to 70 million Xbox 360's and PS3's in the world. A lot of those people will probably buy a Battlefield 4, but early adopters of next generation will probably be lured by it as well.

Imagine the next gen versions offering 60fps and 64 man online or something along those lines? Makes sense to offer both, because we are going to see less and less current gen games released in the holiday months due to the release of new hardware and software.

Opinions other than yours aren't "hate". I don't need a new console yet because I'm still looking forward to games on my current console. I don't need to google those terms to know the only one of them that's a real game changing factor is having more players on a server. I have games on my console that do that number and more. The other things on your list are nice, but not things that completely change a game. You could have listed much more relevant reasons to game on PC. The bottom line for me is that the games I want to play are mostly on my console.

This is likely where the real problems lie. It's not that EA are dumb, just that they do not have the time/money to code independently for every device and therefore are forced to make shortcuts to bring out games in a timely manner.

The reason i mentioned B3 barely working is because of all the cuts they made the biggest of course being reducing the number of players in a match.

As almost every single big release is scheduled for the beginning of next year i'd say the chances of an end of 2013 release for new consoles it pretty high.

Really hate it when people say this. If they're so "lazy" as you call it, why don't you go ahead and show them how it's done? Creating a game is an insane amount of work, and time restrictions and deadlines further complicate the situations.

As I recall Gears of war 2 rendered hundreds of monsters and Gears with vechiles all at once when you were underground. Starhawk does it too online except with even more players about 31 with space ships, vechiles, tanks, build your own defense, and robots. Some devs have already come out and said they are working on nextgen consoles so i'd imagine that would mean dev kits have gone out already.
It is 'different' to develop for the PS3, due to the setup not sure if 'harder' really qualifies. PS2 was said to be 'harder' to develop for than the PS3. And yea porting doesn't work real well as you know since the hardware is vastly different.

Devs working on nextgen consoles or games you mean? But that would be still pretty much useless considering there is still no confirmation of next gen systems. They say that but those are still words. And there are still no confirmation of developer kits either so what developers say are just words again. And no I'm pretty sure developers had said they had a harder time decoding games on the PS3 than the 360 and it would take more time and effort so they would just port the games from the 360 which supports the fact that DICE are in fact lazy. As they are given the choice to develop on consoles separately.

Yeah they do have a focus on money but that still doesn't give them the reason to rush their products. In fact they would be losing money as consumers would not be so eager to buy a new game soon since this one just recently came out. I still don't get why people say they can go with both. If the game is being released on current gen consoles AND next gen then there would be no reason to be purchasing the game for next gen consoles or the consoles itself. Especially considering it's released on current gen consoles. Not only that they are limiting them selves from using full potential of BF4 on Next gen consoles just because they are releasing the game on current gen. So it would not be smart of them at all to release on both current gen and next gen at the same time.

Also they would make more profit releasing BF4 on current gen consoles considering there are 60+ million consoles sold. And next gen consoles are just being released. So not every battlefield player will have a PS4 or xbox 720.

I highly doubt new consoles are going to be released for a high profile game like Battlefield 4. It wouldn't make sense to beta on 1 system and then release on another. It doesn't make sense to release on 2 different systems cause then you get games like NFS:Carbon. Since the PS3 was so hard to code for it was missing half the game that the PS2 version had. It doesn't make sense. 2015 reveal maybe 2016 at the latest. That would be about 10 years.

BF4 needs to be for PS4/720 and obviously pc will get it and already have the hardware for it.

BF3 isn't old enough for BF4 anyway.

BFBC3 should come to PS3/360/PC first anyway.

Why would EA confirm a console they aren't even making. Plus when the PS3 came out, developers still released PS2 games. Depending on how the 720 and PS4 are developed for it'll take Devs some time to learn tips and tricks to getting the best games on them.

Oh please, this article is stupid. If my memory serves me correctly, Battlefied Modern Combat was release at the end of the first xbox cycle with the 360 was about 6 months away from being released. A few months after the xbox 360 was released they release a xbox 360 version of the game so there's nothing in the rule that says you can't release the same game twice on 2 different systems.

In other words when there was a transition between consoles there were still different versions coming out on different platforms at different dates. All we know now is that there is a beta for BF4 on unspecified platforms. And we know the beta date.
