Microsoft's Xbox 360: Big Slice, Small Pie

The video game industry has been fading for three years, but you wouldn't know it by the way that Microsoft (NAS: MSFT) is gushing.

Here's last night's tweet from the Twitter account of Microsoft's corporate communications department:
#Xbox360 is No. 1 U.S. console for 18th straight month & top three selling titles are Xbox games

Microsoft claims to have sold 257,000 Xbox 360 units last month, and that's good enough for a thick 47% of the market that it shares with Sony's (NYS: SNE) PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's (OTC: NTDOY.PK) Wii.

What? An article getting all gloomy about the home console market and speaking highly of iOS devices and mobile games?

I've never seen this before! /s

Seriously, mobile games are great if you're sitting in the subway or bus. But it's not going to replace my console or PC for real games at home. I don't care how many times you mention these stupid controller attachments or streaming to my TV. These 1 dollar to 10 dollar games on the Android store and iTunes very rarely have the depth of a XBLA or PSN game.

Stop with this junk, it's obvious why the 360 is dipping. It's getting OLD. 95% of the people who want a 360 right now, have one or there is a easy cheap pre owned option.

Godmars2902378d ago

But the sad fact is that:
1) The industry is either reaching or has reached a point of critical mass in regards to the popular market.

2) Many publishers are at the level where they're "Too Big to Fail." Because if they do they're going to take a lot of the industry itself with them.

When the crash likely happens you're going to see more support for iOSs while quality titles for consoles drop. There'll also be loads of PSN/XBL games.

Sales numbers for hardware are stupid - it's a stupid argument to hang your hat on. 360 was plagued by the RRoD, and to a much (much) smaller degree, PS3 with the YLoD. Slim models always spike numbers, and then you enter this whole grey area where you have re-purchases, and double console households, etc.

The real numbers are in software, and NPD doesn't count every retailer, so again, discussing sales numbers is a moot point. Also, there's the whole NPD vs international number aspect that people on each side of the 'fanboy war' like to bring up. Who really cares?

The only thing I feel that the article brings up that's worth talking about is the tidal wave of mobile devices and the impact it supposedly has on console gaming. I'll argue all day long that mobile gaming and console gaming don't belong in the same conversation (as of right now) and should be treated as separate entities. You have only a midgets handful of mobile games that compare to console games. They serve two very different purposes. Mobile games are a 'quick fix,' while console games are more of an in-depth 'spend more than 10 minutes on the toilet' experience.

Lastly - that's a kick-ass console skin - does anyone have a source for either PS3 or 360 skins like that?

I know, the skin looks hella sick.

This is a good site. I got 3 from them and like them.

This site is for the older 360 models

I think the whole mobile gaming / free to play move is going to get a big market correction its self.

Dms20122378d ago

When I can plug a mobile device into my 55" LG tv and play with a proper controller AND get the same or better experience, then mobile might usurp traditional consoles. Until then its as Deffer said. Mobile gaming is for a few minutes of amusement until you get a frigging headache from straining to make out details on a tiny screen. Its cheap and quick, but ultimately unfulfilling, its the fast food of the gaming world.

Let's see how Microsoft's tablets do. See If they tweet those #'s. Sony might gain market share with a price cut in the US, but seems to be outselling Xbox in other countries. Guess America is all that matters to them

cstyle2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

Tablets don't have anything to do with gaming. Even if the tablets don't do well windows is still used by 95% of computers in the world today. MS don't need the gaming industry as much as sony does. Sony doesn't have anything to fall back on. Their tvs are getting beat by Samsung, they have lost the portable music industry to apple, their movies don't do as well as they used to, Nintendo is dominating the portable gaming market, and ms has stolen their US market share right under their nose.....all sony can do now is try to keep from going bankrupt, which is where it looks like they are heading if things don't turn around. This is what happens when you don't take competition seriously....especially in the gaming industry. I remember back in 2006 they were laughing thinking that PS was gonna dominate in the US again. Now who is laughing?

videoxgamexfanboy2378d ago

Well said cstyle. Plus bubble to counter all the negatives ur going to get for daring to talk down on Sony...

ha2e482378d ago

Well said, your post will soon be removed for trolling which is a shame as its probably the most sensible comment this article will get!

videoxgamexfanboy2378d ago

Well he did point out " in America" and the United States is the biggest market when it comes to games and also I'm sure he was using NPD numbers so why shouldn't he brag about US number of sales? We all no MS can't give away a 360 in Japan so why bother with those numbers?

cstyle2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

"We all no MS can't give away a 360 in Japan so why bother with those numbers?"

The problem with that is that japan is not even close to being as significant as they used to be for the industry. They are slowly falling apart and getting beat by the west. They aren't producing great games the way they used to and the west is creaming them. For proof just look at how devs like Kojima spends most of his time visiting western studios... and look at the failure of studios this gen like team Ico.They haven't produced one game this gen. Things are changing and japan is struggling to keep up.

nukeitall2378d ago

Actually MS produces numbers for Japan too usually in their annual report, but they obviously don't do it every month. Neither does Sony.

It doesn't matter though for MS to have:

"Xbox 360 Best-selling console of 2011 Worldwide"

It must have sold combined more in Europe, America and the rest of the world.

360GamerFG2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

You must have missed the part where the 360 was the highest selling console of 2011 WORLDWIDE, not just the US. Thats okay, most N4G enthusiasts have also decided to wipe that painful morsel of fact from their memories.
You are not alone.
Speaking of tablets, how are SONY's tablets doing? Any numbers there?
Not bad for a company that was a DISTANT second place last gen, to not only gain more than double market share but also manage to make a profit with only a handful of studios and one console.
I got a 2 week ban for saying this last time but do you guys know that since 2006, Xbox 360 business has brought in more PROFIT than PS3, PS2, PSP and PS VITA business combined? Just have a look at financial reports for SCE and EDD and you'll see.
My statements are factual and relevant, so to the mod that seems to be targeting me, I played nice.

nukeitall2378d ago

"Sony might gain market share with a price cut in the US, but seems to be outselling Xbox in other countries."

"Xbox 360 Best-selling console of 2011 Worldwide"

MS hasn't had a price cut since 2009. Sony had two, this will be a third one.

"Let's see how Microsoft's tablets do."

There has been some rumors that MS ordered 5 million tablets. I think they might be too expensive compared to the spat of cheap ones with Android.
