In Defence Of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

Kotaku writes: Metal Gear Solid 4 is a disaster. The plot goes beyond not making sense, to the point of parody. Retroactive continuity is stretched thin around the most bloated entertainment production since Caligula. Entire sections of the game are clumsily executed and are simply not fun to play. When it finally ends — after what seems like hours of false endings, nonsensical twists, and some truly, truly terrible dialogue — you want to strangle someone, but you’re not entirely sure who you should be strangling.

But when people ask me what my favourite video game of this generation is? Depending on my mood, I usually say Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

I can summarize what was wrong with MGS4. COMPARED TO THE OTHER MGS GAMES. It's still great other than that. Definitely not a disaster. And had alot of improvements, Especially the combat. As the author states, you could play it the way you wanted. You have allies alot of the time. You can play stealth and completely skip the rebels fights etc. So much gameplay mechanics, one of the things you can always love about MGS is the Ai. It's so fun to mess around with enemies, and since MGS2 it's been fun trying to avoid a squad sent out to look for you, clearing rooms and ****.

What I didn't like about the 'changes' from MGS1-3 to 4 was, location changes. MGS usually feels like a little load of hubworlds all connected that you can go to and return too. I liked that. In this one, it's large levels where you have a point on the other side of the map and you have to get to it in whatever way you want, I preferred to old way but still, MGS 4 still did this better than most games.

The story is not hard to follow imo, but it does have too many last second plots twists and by the end I was just like, "a come on really?" Some cutscenes were also extremely over dramatic and sorta corny compared to the other 3. Where MGS3 had this silent Drama that hit you hard(Such as Snake saluting the bosses grave), MGS4 through it in your face with extended good bye dialogue scenes. Still none of the deaths come close to Sniper wolf or the boss. Especially Hal's good bye to Naomi was just...ugh. And Raiden's became that way to in the end, and Meryl with Johnny.

What I would have preferred to is, to limit your ammo. Give you points in a chapter to buy ammo/change loadouts again. Not be able to do it constantly, because that made the action side to easy. In the other MGS's you were hesitant about killing enemies incase you needed the ammo later.

Still though, one of the best games this gen. Madly underrated online although it was inconvenient with Konami id and all.

Oh also, the bosses in MGS4. Crying wolf etc. I didn't like them at all. Not as characters, the battles themselves were actually alright.

I just didn't like the game as a whole after the first 2 chapters. The first 2 chapters resemble the MGS gameplay that I love. After that it declines into a boring follow quest and then descends further to a bunch of boss fights, action scenes and robots. The robots are boring to sneak past.

Hugely disappointed by MGS4.

First 2 chapters were gold and I wish the remaining chapters played in a similar fashion.

Sounds like your average dumbass with ADHD. And rest of the article seems to support it. Another horribly written piece by Kotaku. What a surprise.

I haven't played MGS4 for a while, but when I bought it a few years ago it was definitely my favourite game - i played it over 3 times back to back.

I still consider it one of my favs of the gen, but I have to see how it holds up.

I thought the same about Uncharted 2 until I got in a gun fight and was strangely extremely disappointed by how the people don't react to being shot until the last kill shot. It killed the immersion.

Ultr2292d ago

you must mean Uncharted 3, because in Uncharted 2 the enemies DEFINATELY react to every shot!

TheGamingArt2292d ago

...... The game wasn't that hard to understand. I seriously don't get people saying that. Pay attention, it's not COD. Also, disaster my ass.

MWH2292d ago

but it was still a mess.

TheGamingArt2292d ago (Edited 2292d ago )

No, no it wasn't.. at all. In no way does long cut scenes = mess

MWH2292d ago (Edited 2292d ago )

you misunderstood. i didn't mean the cut scenes, i actually enjoyed watching them, i enjoyed the whole MGS4 experience.

i meant the story was messy, it could've been much better. i have played all the MGS games by the way, i know what i'm talking about.
