5 Game Sequels Worse Than Its Predecessor

Charlie writes:

"Most of the time (but not all of the time), sequels come out and they better their predecessor. Last generations games tended to do that quite often; probably because developers were still learning how to implement new and interesting mechanics and stories. But in this generation of games, sequels are now being thrown out pointlessly, with less development time or perhaps even a different developer. Some sequels aren’t even like that and yet somehow, they’re still just not as good as the originals. Check out 5 games of this generation which are worse by either a slight margin or a major one."

I wonder if anyone will say Skyrim at some point :/

A lot of people were unhappy about it and thought it was worse than Oblivion.... surprisingly :/

VanillaBear4729d ago (Edited 4729d ago )

I think Skyrim was worse but it didn't mean I thought it was crap, I loved the game. I just felt like it was dumbed down too much....not a lot of variation was found compared to past ES games. I kept looking at stuff in the game going

"Thats missing, but it was in Morrowind/Oblivion"

"Why did they take that out"

"Where is <insert weapon/spell/staff/shop/skill >...it was in Oblivion"

Things were taken out and made easier to make the game more accessible.

Oh and I disagree with Uncharted 3...it improved on everything a sequel should of. I did find the agressive AI to be a bit annoying though, why have a cover system if they are just going to charge at you while in a shoot out...what person would do that in real life.

The only thing I didn't like in U3 was what ND did to the multiplayer. They turned it into every other online game with horrible gimmicks like Kickbacks/loadouts/upgradable perks/weapon mods

"The gameplay in the multiplayer also felt very tired and very “samey” than the last game’s multiplayer"

See I think it was the opposite...it felt nothing like U2s multiplayer.

Kran4729d ago

So... you're saying:

U3 improved on everything....

Though the AI and the multiplayer wasn't as good...

so... not only do you see my slight dilemma, but you kind of just contradicted yourself.

:P

blitz06234729d ago

It's hard to say that a sequel is worse when it still scored 90%+ when you take into context the predecessor that scored 95%, ie U3 and ME3 (ignoring the ending) IMO are not in any way worse than U2 and ME2. Dragon age 2 and AC Revelations on the other hand are the accurate definitions of worse sequels.

ABizzel14729d ago

This is like saying getting $50 for free is worse than getting $100 for free. Yeah the $100 may be better, but at the end of the day you'd be satisfied with either of the two.

nevercloser074729d ago

Yeah the UC3 vs. UC2 thing is stupid.

UC3 is a better game than UC2. Period. The thing is, Uncharted 2 was a monumental shift in what people think of as an action adventure, story-driven game. UC2 was a better game compared to the time of its release and the state of the industry at the time. However, if UC3 came out a few years ago and UC2 came out now people would be complaining about UC2 being slow, etc.

It's funny because people wanted it exactly like Uncharted 2 but better. If Naughty Dog made it the exact same with a different story & better graphics people would have flipped out saying they were lazy. They try to change a few things and people say it was too mainstream compared to Uncharted 2. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Oh_Yeah4729d ago (Edited 4729d ago )

i dont really agree with any of these the only one i cant give a real opinion on is revelations, im not even half way threw yet. the game that sticks out to me this gen was killzone 3...the graphics became more cartoonish looking, feels like theres no weight to your guns, overall felt more like cod. thats what made killzone 2 a great shoooter the weighty feeling and the difficulty. I thought uncharted 3's story and gun sounds > uncharted 2. thats what i hated the most about uc 2 was the toy sounding guns lol idk kinda ruined the experience a little for me. Dragon age origins combat and graphics were horrible! compared to dragon age 2. mass effect 2 & 3 were about the same. Gears...i thought was mediocre through out the series but 3 i could at least play a little bit before instantly putting down...still only an alright game, just felt more polished i guess graphically & gameplay wise, enough for me to give it a chance.

xursz4729d ago

Kran, you submitted the article, and you also seem to be in here trying to cause controversy. By any chance, are you staffed by the site who wrote (or the author of) this article?

ReservoirDog3164729d ago

I would say the story wasn't as good as Uncharted 1&2 too. There was a lot of big reveals in it but one of them was purely abandoned even though it was a really big* statement and just a lot of little plot threads that seemed to have been forgotten (like how that one bad guy seemed invincible but actually isn't).

The stories were the big thing about Uncharted that they gave so much attention to but when you look at the sum of its parts, it came up lacking.

Still a really good game though. Especially when the plane is going down. Man.

ShinMaster4729d ago (Edited 4729d ago )

Boring story.
Boring, dead characters.
Simplistic combat.
Feels like events and accomplishments don't matter.
Repetitive fetch quests.

Oh, but it has massive beautiful landscapes for you to roam around and waste time on, so.... 9.5/10!!!
Seriously, I feel Bethesda gets too much credit at times. Game was so overhyped.

And that's why 100hr open-world games aren't always better than more focuse linear games :)
But in the end, I guess it's all subjective.

nukeitall4729d ago (Edited 4729d ago )

I really don't feel like Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3 or Mass Effect 3 should be on that list. It seems out of place, since they all were solid sequels.

It's not like Dragon Age II, Bioshock 2 or Ninja Gaiden 3 who was almost universally accepted as a "worse" sequel.

I feel it is a poor list that just picked on hugely popular *recent* games!

vakarian754729d ago (Edited 4729d ago )

I don't like how in skyrim you cant have a sword and shield equipped and still be able to use magic like in oblivion and about uncharted 3 its not that it was worse but that they made it too soon after 2 so there wasn't a big change like from 1 to 2 where there were huge changes to the graphics and gameplay plus the edition of multiplayer.

JDcg4729d ago

Yeah UC3's ending sucked, mainly the boss fight. You cant say the boss fight in UC3 was better than UC2. LOL Press "x" press "circle" press "triangle" the end. I felt like a bad ass at the end of UC2.

MiamiACR214728d ago

I'm a huge Uncharted fan, and will fight to the verbal death with anyone who smites its name. But with that said, I was not happy with Uncharted 3 coming from Uncharted 1 and 2; it was flat out embarrassing on some levels in comparison.

Aghashie4728d ago

I don't know w people insists in Uncharted 3. I had a better experience w Uncharted 2. Almost the same w Killzone 3... if not because I can play the game w the sharp-shooter, that game would be stored on my closet w another hundred or so titles.
Uncharted 3 is a good game, but lacks quality when compared to the second.
I can see the disagree's coming. But that's my opinion, so I don't care.

ThanatosDMC4728d ago (Edited 4728d ago )

I thought the villain in U3 was bad compared to the guy in U2. She didnt seem evil enough which kind of screwed the story a bit, but the story between Drake and Sully was top notch.

Agreed with bakasora. Where's Diablo 3?

abzdine4728d ago

I still think U2 is better than U3. I could clearly see they couldn't top what they did with U2, which is 100% ok because they raised the bar SO HIGH !

Qbanj694728d ago

All I'm going to say is that I have both Platinums on Uncharted 1 and 2.

I could not get past 5 hours in U3... It just didn't draw me in like U1 and U2- it felt tedious playing it.

I understand that's just my opinion, but I have to agree with the list.

BrutallyBlunt4729d ago

Bioshock and Crackdown should be on that list.

Blastoise4729d ago

Bioshock 2 was awesome, never understood the hate for that game. I enjoyed it more than the first, and yes, I played the original first.

MysticStrummer4729d ago

Can't say about Crackdown but I definitely agree Bioshock 2 was a big letdown after the first game.

nukeitall4729d ago

@Blastoise:

The first Bioshock had a great story line with awesome twists. The second game was the exact same game with none of the twist.

In my opinion, Bioshock 2 should have definitely been on that list more so than many on the current list.

ALLWRONG4729d ago

Every SOCOM made this gen should also be on the list. There hasn't been a good SOCOM since the PS2, even though there have been like 45 of them :P

Sometimes it seems 95% of games are sequels.

ZeroWil4728d ago

I really enjoyed Bioshock 2. The first half was a bit slow, but it really picked up after that. The only problem I had was that I never really felt like I was playing as a Big Daddy, and the wonder of Rapture wasn't there this time around (though I still loved exploring the areas).

chazjamie4728d ago

gran turismo 5 should be on that list. Disappointed with every aspect of that game, from the graphics to the damage, its all so bad.

MrBeatdown4728d ago

I loved Crackdown 1. I bought Gears 1 as my first 360 game, and while I loved Gears 1, I felt like an idiot for not getting Crackdown instead.

I tried the demo for Crackdown 2 and wondered what the hell happened. I haven't played Crackdown 1 in years, so I don't know if my tastes and expectations had changed or if the game was as bad as I thought it was. I'm guessing it's the latter though.

Also, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Killzone 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, MotorStorm Apocalypse, and any Final Fantasy after IX.

All good games, but none of them were as good as the game before it.

I know I'm at a minority but I do think Uncharted 3 was better than 2. Online multilpayer was greatly improved and the campaign was better gameplay wise if not narrative wise.

StarFox4729d ago

actually i thought the online was atrocious U2's online is still way better imo.

Thatguy-3104729d ago

Uncharted isnt a bad game its just as good as Uncharted 2. I mean from a technical stand point it does improve but from storytelling i dont think so. I mean from the poor character development to the hordes of enemies that appear left and right one play through was enough for me. Multiplayer wise i do prefer Uncharted's 2 but the one in Drake's deception is still fun. Hopefully they bring back the old elements for Uncharted 4. Plus a better villain and give different characters more screen time like they did in Among Thieves.

JDcg4729d ago

No UC3 was great by all accounts but one thing UC2 did better was the boss fight. UC3 boss fight was the biggest disappointment. Lazaravich was tough as sh*t to beat. I felt like I accomplished something at the end of that game. But UC3's boss fight could of been waaaaaaaay better. I don't know why they didn't do something with that hallucination thing. They could of basically had any kind of boss they wanted.

Jazz41084728d ago

I have tried to play and finish uncharted 3 multiple times and it feels like a chore and this is coming from someone who could not put the fist two down. I dnt play multiplayer much so I can't comment on that.

xtremeimport4729d ago

yet still great games. difference of a few points here and there. kind of a silly article.

Nerdmaster4729d ago

Changing the stupid leveling system from Oblivion/Morrowind alone makes Skyrim better than those games.

BitbyDeath4729d ago

Agreed. Oblivion had the worst levelling system ever.

Irishguy954729d ago (Edited 4729d ago )

Skyrim = Action adventure.

Edit---
Also mynameisEvil, I agree abotu morrowind, never played Df though, I also think NV is my favorite bethesda game(even though Bethesda didn't make it). Good leveling system(no level or loot scaling). Good world, varied quests and gameplay. Better faction and moral system than Bethesda games.

mynameisEvil4729d ago

I'd say every Elder Scrolls game after Daggerfall was worse than it's predecessor. Morrowind was, in my opinion, the last GREAT Elder Scrolls game, meaning that I only have two Elder Scrolls games that I really like.

Arena was... broken.
Oblivion's leveling system was broken...
Skyrim was just boring...

*sigh*

Also, really? NV felt like a cash-in? It not only improved the gameplay, it brought Fallout 3's terrible breaking of the lore into an acceptable spot while giving us a true Fallout game itself. I don't understand why people bash on that game so much. Was it buggier at launch? Yes, but I distinctly remember Fallout 3 being buggier, if even slightly. Besides, most of those bugs aren't there anymore, so I just don't get it.

MadLad4728d ago (Edited 4728d ago )

For me, the series sort of died after Morrowind. Oblivion was a mess. Skyrim, more or less, was just what Oblivion should have been, though it still had issues. The series has simply gotten too watered down at this point, At least with Skyrim they gave us an interesting world to explore again, even if it was bland and static.

/rant

New Vegas, as far as open-world RPGs go, is possibly the best game out there right now. It is easily one of the best roleplaying in years. Good customization, well written story, great characters, and lots of player choice.

I disagree with Gears 3...I though gears 2 was the worst

Silly gameAr4729d ago

I love the Gears series, but 3 just felt like one big fetch quest to me. I thought Gears 2 was better, though 3 did have it's moments.

Summons754729d ago

gears 2 was getting dragged around by Dom for no realson what so ever, felt like I wasted my entire time on finding his dead wife. That's why I loved that Dom died best scene ever

da_2pacalypse4728d ago

Gears2 was by far the worst gears of war game of the series. Besides, Gears3 has the best online MP... and the story is actually interesting.

JellyJelly4728d ago

I enjoyed Gears 3 much more than Gears 2. The levels were more fun and the multiplayer was miles better than before.

The strategic elements they added to Horde mode in Gears 3 made it some of the best online components I've experienced this gen.

TBM4729d ago

for me the first gears is the best in the series, but i 150% agree with you about Dom i was extremely happy when they killed his a$$. i actually laughed during that whole sequence of them trying to get me to have emotional feeling for his stupid a$$ character.

part 2 was the gayest game i've ever played with him being soooo damn wimpy and whiny.

Summons754729d ago

oh yeah, series wise the 1st is definitely the best just out of 2 and 3 I prefer 3 anyday

InTheLab4729d ago

Not sure why people disagreed. Gears 2 was clearly a cash in and the multiplayer was broken for a year.

InTheLab4729d ago

Cliffy B even said it was his biggest disappointment. Gears 2 is the reason why there's more cutscenes, deeper relationships, and dedicated servers in Gears 3.

@Skateboard..

must be...

shadow27974728d ago

It may have been a cash in, but I felt like the Gears 2 campaign was paced a lot better than the first. There was a lot of variety in the environments, whereas Gears 1 was incredibly samey and dragged the whole game.

I beat Gears 2 in a couple of days, but Gears 1 took me 6 months because I kept getting bored. And while Gears 2 didn't have the best story, at least it had one.

Different strokes for different folks. Someday I'll get around to playing Gears 3.

SnakeCQC4729d ago

agreed with everything except for uncharted and acr really they made the list but modern warfare 1.2amd 1.3 didnt ????
