Why Ocarina of Time Isn’t Just A Link to the Past in 3D

ZD writes: Since I started participating in the Zelda community in 2004, a common criticism I’ve heard against Ocarina of Time–and it does usually take on the tone of criticism–is that it is A Link to the Past in 3D. In my experience, it’s generally older fans making this claim, but regardless, it’s been there for a while now. However pervasive this particular claim is, it does lend itself to some discussion about how Zelda games transitioned into 3D, and where the franchise stands now. Superficially, the games are similar. Both games use a dual-world mechanic and both follow a similar structure–three introductory dungeons in the “light world,” and a more thorough game in the “dark world.” The meat of the entire game is in these dark worlds, actually, and the story bears this out, with Ganon/Ganondorf ruling the darker realms. Notably, both games offer freedom which has long since left the series–you can play the dungeons and progress through the overworld out of order.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

Chrono Trigger at 31 makes my heart hurt.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list at all is a crime.
