Screw Nostalgia: Why Gaming is Better Now

UM writes: I almost fell into another blogging trap where I was tempted to write about how good games used to be, and how things have changed for the worse now. The whole Mass Effect 3 ending debacle was torn open as a fresh wound when Bioware released the “extended cut” DLC yesterday, and now when we’re getting “proper” endings as downloadable content, I can’t help but thinking we’re moving in the wrong direction.

But it’s not fair to dismiss the progress of an entire industry because of Starchildren or the fact that I can’t play any good local multiplayer games any more. The fact is, the industry has come a long way from when we were kids, and it would be good to remember that. That’s what this post aims to do.

Games certainly look better, but the fact that more and more they're being designed around social aspects, that single player has been trivialized if it hasn't outright died, that many game journalist, gamers who have the slight bit of courage to make a blog, have drunken the Koolaid publishers wanted them to drink in hopes to promote corporate agenda which has given us less content. Made the majority of games this gen FPS.

Give me an old 8-bit Final Fantasy over Final Fantasy XIII any day.

final fantasy xiii is the best game ever made.......not!
PS3 is the past, present and future of gaming.

People confuse nostalgia with simply liking an older game more than a newer one. I have replayed plenty of older titles and they are just better games then most of what is available today.

I do think people have on nostalgia goggles (me too of course) but thats not the problem. The problem is people dismiss this gen. 10 years from now it will be remembered as one of the best. The gen that birthed Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Mgs4, Demons Souls, Xeoblade, Bioshock, Dragon Age, Uncharted, Fallout 3, Gears and the countless other future classics. The only real genre missing is jrpgs and we still had some really great ones like Lost Odyssey, Magna Carta 2, Resonance of Fate, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, and Xenoblade. There is so many great new ip's but its mostly an evolution of games not a revolution like the n64 and psx era. The reason that is remembered so fondly is Mario 64/Zelda OOT was the first real 3d console games. FF7 on psx was the reinvention of the series and introduced cgi cutscenes. Those were major turning points in gaming. All the games this gen just built on the revolutions of the past like Bioshock from System Shock, F3 from the isometric ones, Demons Souls from Kings Field, Mario Galaxy from the n64/gamecube one, Xenoblade from Xenosaga, Mass Effect from Kotor exc. We got a refinement of the best series ever and it really is a great gen. I think people will come to realise this down the road.

I agree with you Divine, this gen has pumped out some fantastic games. It"s just far easier to complain about it because of the super ease of the internet and the many forums that now house trolls.

But make no mistake I am certain that ten years from now people will look back and realize that this gen had some very remarkable games.
