Forbes: "Now that Sony has purchased Gaikai, it could attempt to cut out the middleman (consoles) and bring games directly to consumers without requiring them to buy new devices."
is netflix proof there not going to sell movies anymore? c'mon now.
PlayStation is far too successful of a worldwide brand to ever be "dumped". Stupid article
yeah tell me about it.
Is this article really insinuating that Sony will dump a massive, globally-recognized gaming brand, at a time when they are restructuring, and placing an increased focus on gaming as one of the pillars of growth in a time of economic decline? Hit-mongering at its finest.
True, i don't see the need to drop the name Playstation. It's still a very valuable brand recognition. It could turn into a hybrid of some sorts but Playstation has too much history to just ignore.
Didn't they read the article that the ps4 is already began developed in 2010?
Didn't I hear Kaz say that they wanted to EXPAND the PS brand. If anything the gaikai acquisition was meant for that.
Some pretty cool info, speculation, and possibilities on Sony's acquisition on Gaikai here: http://www.ubergizmo.com/20... Admittedly, I don't know much about Cloud gaming, so the that article in the link was an interesting read for me. I think the PS4 will have "cloud mode" and "hardware / traditional mode" to play games as stated. The prospect of playing PS1, 2, and 3 games through a Vita, PS console, PC, MAC, internet-connected tv, etc is exciting. Though I wouldn't want the next console to be cloud-only gaming.
Exactly. Why the hell would they drop their most profitable division and put more resources into their TV division which is just not doing so well right now? Sorry, but this article blows.
Whos' leg do you have to hump to get shitty sites likes Forbes to get banned from making articles appear on N4G?.... I know its OPINION, but I cannot stress any further how I tire of stupid people feeling entitled to their opinions. IS SONY CONFIRMING A PS4 PROOF THAT SONY IS GOING TO STOP CARING ABOUT PS1/PS2/PS3 backwards compatibility?! Is Sony's brand name starting with an S give proof that Sony is STUPID? HEHE.
"bring games directly to consumers without requiring them to buy new devices." 1) it's called pc gaming. 2) why the hell would sony cut off playstation when it is its most profitable division?
Yea i know, the article seem's dumb.
Let's play the wild speculation game.I say the first thing that pops into my head and write it down without logic or thinking at all.
And here comes the articles to slant the good news about Gaikai, trying to get people to look at it from another angle, a warped angle. Fox News bullshit 101
You stream games with this, you still need good hardware if you want the best quality and performance out of a game, which this defintely won't deliver. We'll still ultimately need what will probably be a Ps4 to get the most out of our games. Even when or if cloud gaming becomes as good as the real thing as internet connections become ridiculously fast, I'm sure playstation will still be retained as a trademark, only utilized virtually, not for a piece of hardware.
I had to read the article to see if it was as stupid as the title. It wasn't... ....however: "Now that Sony has purchased Gaikai, it could attempt to cut out the middleman (consoles) and bring games directly to consumers without requiring them to buy new devices." .....or it could bring streaming games directly to customers with PLAYSTATION devices and still allow them to purchase and download games if they wish to do so. Cutting out the middleman(being their own playstation consoles) SOUNDS silly and is a bad move at this point anyway.
Erm.........PS4's confirmed as not being the first or cheapest next gen console.
I feel like Forbes has fallen so far recently. They used to have really insightful and thoughtful opinions analysis. But now average commenter can tare down their entire thesis in one sentence. Its pathetic. They are literally the only ones talking about Sony dropping the PlayStation brand. We havent heard it anywhere else and yet they keep trying to push it as if its a viable option for a company low on recognizable brands. Its clear that the author has an idea in his head and is determined to not think about it too much. He is making a far fetched assumption and basing everything he writes on that. All the while we all see what Sony is really doing by expanding the PlayStation brand to other pieces of hardware (PlayStation Mobile), and leaning on it while it restructures the company even further. This author is clueless and narrow-minded; we've read worse bloggers that have more sense than this guy.
Interestingly, they had an article listing six reasons to buy a ps3 over an xbox. Perhaps they got a call from MS and threw some rubbish together to save face. I'm only kidding, however, that would be an explanation as to why this article seems to lack substance and reasoning. Today it's as if n4g and forbes have merged to some extent. UPDATE!!!!!!!! "Silly Flamebait Articles From Forbes Today Proof of Forbes and N4G Merger?" HAHA
Well written article, but cmon, dropping the playstation brand?
Sony manufactures their own consoles. If they cut out the "middleman", they're cutting out themselves.
That sentence made me LOL
maybe in 10 or 15 years when ultra high-speed connections are the normal.
Any company would LOVE to have a brand like Playstation, and you think Sony is going to get rid of it. Stupidest thing i've ever heard in my life.
Playstation Gaikai, not PS4 lol.
That is by far the stupidest question I have ever heard!!!! Why would sony do away with the one thing that is profitable in their company??? Not saying it's the only thing that's profitable.
My god Forbes what were you guys smoking when you came up with that idea?! The purchase of Gaikai gives Sony the options & opportunity to grow its brand & be more prepared for the ever changing landscape that is technology. It will be more of a supplement for PSN that enhances the services of that platform. The PS brands library of games is MASSIVE & the ability to easily reintroduce these titles to the generation that has missed out on these games or give gamers the ability to play what they missed is good, isn't it? The Playstation brand has become a staple in the whole Sony corporation & one that Sony will continue to grow with the times.
