Final Fantasy VIII: An Often Forgotten Gem

TGC writes: A regular feature within gaming circles is the old ‘which Final Fantasy is better’ debate. Some exalt the virtues of Final Fantasy VII (arguably the most popular) citing the sadism of Sephiroth and the wonderfully detailed Materia system. Some claim that Final Fantasy VI is the best with possibly the most evil villain ever invented being Kefka. FFIX and FFX usually get honorable mentions for various reasons. One game that is often missing from this debate’s vocabulary (at least in those I have experienced) is Final Fantasy VIII. Why?

Great article! Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite. They don't make them like this anymore. I enjoyed 7,8,9,and 10. Final Fantasy 13 and 13-2 were okay but nowhere near as good as Final Fantasy 8 was.

Hicken4313d ago

VIII gets overlooked because it followed VII, pure and simple. But, to me, VIII is a superior game in every way, and is STILL my favorite FF ever.

Xwow20084313d ago

Same for me FFVIII is my fav FF :)

Irishguy954313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

I disagree, the last quarter of FF8 wasn't good enough. 7 overall was better imo. Still i'd put them close. But 7 has it's up's and FF8 has it's ups too. What's great is that Ps1 was the golden era of FF, while alot of people think FF6 is better than the Ps1 games, at least Ps1 had 3 consecutive god level FF's.

Just about to replay FF8 though. Since i haven't played it in 2 years(and played FF7 last year again)

Edit--
See mike, Squalls development might have been better than Squalls, but the rest of the characters wasn't as good at all. Gameplay I disagree with too, battle system sure i'll give you that, but FF7 had so much more gameplay elements to make up for things a battle system can't handle. Such as the Motor bike escape from Shinra, the S-Rpg on the mountain/condor, Skiing etc. So So much stuff like that. And music was better, but just as music, I don't think it set the mood as well as FF7 did for it's area's. Except for that one when you're exploring a cave and stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watc... was good for the magical exploring mood.

Ugh can't explain but FF7 had alot of that, whereas FF8 had alot of just epic music. Oh and story...yeah sure, but the Setting and lore behind FF7 was alot better. Plot wise the whole time breakage thing was better in FF8 imo too.

Well...again, ups and downs.

user54670074313d ago

Agreed the reason it gets nickpicked to death because it wasn't a FF7 sequel...even though FF fans knew each FF tells a differen't story

The thing is though, in my opinion, it was better then FF7 in every way...gameplay, story, character development on main character (Squalls was amazing) and music.

dumahim4313d ago

I don't agree.
For me, VIII took too long for the story to really hook me. It wasn't until they got to space that was finally hooked. The Draw/Stock system was flawed as well. A lot hated it, but it could also be abused to make the game way too damn easy. I did really like the game overall though.

FF10 was the last really good FF

killerhog4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

i didnt forget im replaying it. im also level 100 with squall, shiva, quiz and still in the very first mission.

Chrono4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

What's the point of being at level 100? All enemies will be at the same level.

killerhog4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

hahhaha you really are a newb if you dont know the leveling up trick. sorry buddy but the enemies are at default low level. theres a trick very early in the game you can use that gets you easy level ups and doesnt make your exp require go up nor does it make the monsters outside or anywhere else levels go up. this is also something i discovered on my own because im not a newb.

FYI: no cheats, no glitches, no hacks, no gameshark, 100% legit way of reaching level 100 with squall, shiva, and Quiz early in the game (as early as the first mission). in my seed exam i put 10 mins and took out ifrit in 1 blow with shiva LOL past my seed test in 2 mins. now i gotta train ifrit to 100

i also 100% legend of dragoon recently and was wayyyy more powerful than the regular monsters/bosses. really games back then werent hard if you are smart. yes, it did get easier this gen but not as much if you really think about it.

Biggest4313d ago

Oh wow! You are a single player game that no one competes with BOSS! How awesome is that? You're like. . . The Michael Jordan of FFVIII! I bet all the ladies love killerhog because of your FFVIII bossness. Seriously though. You're really cool, bro. Ice cold cool.

wishingW3L4313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

the real trick is to not level up until you get the bonus stats from the GF's (you'll have them by the end of the 3rd disc). And the other trick is to level up the abilities of the GF that converts crappy magic into more powerful one. Then you take that magic and junction it to the attack and "voala", the ultimate fighter.

Then you can level them all up really fast to lvl 100 and with the bonus stats in the "Islands Closest to Heaven and Hell (which has ultra powerful monsters)" using the blue magic of Quistis that kills all enemies instantly.

FF8 battle system is broken. I wonder what were they thinking when they made it because is ridiculous. XD

dumahim4313d ago

Yeah, all I did was made sure I had a full stock of everything. Aura + Haste and I think something else made the game pretty easy.

JellyJelly4313d ago

Didn't like it at all. Flat characters, boring locations, stupid battlesystem with all the button mashing, and the last Queen boss was a bit overpowered.

FF IX was a much better game in every way imo.

Summons754313d ago

FF8 is my second favorite game in the series, I honestly don't think anything can be better than FF6 but I loved 8 so much.

DivineAssault 4313d ago

7, 8, 10, & 12 are the best to me.. 13 seemed so "OFF" to me.. a lot of things just didnt feel right & i didnt enjoy it nearly as much.. The graphics were beautiful tho

Tameel14313d ago (Edited 4313d ago )

I liked FF13 to an extent but it was certainly missing something that other final fantasy games had:

1. The characters felt like anime or JRPG stereotypes instead of real people. It didn't help that they all had a similar facial features and body shapes too. I missed the team having diversity and meeting interesting non playable characters through out the game with varying personalities and stories to tell.

2. The world was boring to look at and was it just me or were all the colors quite dull and muted in FF13? It didn't help that many locations looked very similar and consisted of ugly metallic greys and blues. Everything and everyone felt the same. The linearity didn't help the matter because it never feels like you are exploring different locations and cultures like you did in, for example, FFX. It always felt like you were following a narrow path of sameish areas vaguely joined together to lengthen the game's hours.

FFX was also critisized for being linear game but it was barely noticeable because the different locations always offered something new and exciting. Besaid was bright, beachy and colorful. The plains were wide, green and expansive. Guadosalam was forest like, natural and eerie. Mount Gagazet was cold, barren and unpleasant. Zanarkand was ruined, mystical and mysterious. All of these locations were so different from each other and they each gave the player a specific feeling and a unique look into each culture that resided within.

3. My biggest problem was the battle system. Not because it could be automated but because it seemed very dull compared to previous game's battle systems. All the spells felt the same and they all looked very similar too. I wanted to see my spells DO things to the enemy like previous games. I wanted to see enemies getting blasted with a ball of Fire, getting surrounded by Ice shards, getting pummelled with Meteors from the sky, getting bubbles of Poison burst in their faces, etc. Was I the only person who felt like like a lot of the attacks were really boring to look at? Previous games made me want to try out every spell and attack just to see what it would do but FF13 left me feeling bored whenever I used a new spell or attack. Even the summons were dull to look at and I hated the metallic look of them all. Why was everything in this game so dull and metallic damn it!!

10 PS1 Games That Actually Need A Remake

With hundreds of games, some of which are considered to be classics that hold up to this day, you’ve got the pick of the litter when it comes to choosing a potential remake

^This. THIS!
Stop remaking PS4 games!
Remake PS1 and PS2 games à la FF7R, RE1, Mafia, Half Life style ....
Make Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain etc Remakes happen

darthv7219d ago

Legend of Dragoon... WTH is Sony doing just letting this one squander?

-Foxtrot19d ago

I wonder if their mindset is like “meh we have Final Fantasy what’s the point of our own JRPG”

FinalFantasyFanatic19d ago

@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.

Cacabunga18d ago

Simply because i do not think it will succeed.. maybe a bad example but e we got Medievil remake after many years fans have beg asking... result is It flopped hard. Remaking a JRPG is so risky. Only a bunch of hardcore gamers who played the original would buy it. If Sony put even more budget into it then it’s even more risky.

As i suggested before, i think they should start remaking like square did with Star Ocean. Or something similar to Octopath Traveller. Build up some hype and try on higher scale later on..

Terry_B19d ago

Let me tell you about PS1 games that should get a remake actually.

Jumping Flash (As a VR game)
Ridge Racer 1-4 as Ridge Racers 3..just like the pretty perfect PSP RR1.-2 games but with even more content
Xenogears
Cardinal Sin which was full of nice ideas for its time but was plagued by technical limitations
Bushido Blade ^^ just like CS
Bust A Groove.
WWF Attitude. With the same roster, same voices,Only slightly updated gameplay but current gen graphics
Dynasty Warriors..yes the fighting game that was similar to Tekken 2 while it had weapons. As nice as the DW games are..its a shame they never released a new fighting game

And while I am at it.

Thrill Kill ...hell yes.

KyRo19d ago

Ah Thrill Kill, the game that was banned/cancelled but everyone had played 😂 what a throwback!

darthv7219d ago

jumping Flash would make a great VR game. Im actually quite surprised nobody has thought to do that one... even on the indie side for something like the meta quest.

GhostMirror19d ago

Big yes to Jumping Flash! and Ridge Racer revivals. Bushido Blade was cool as well; it was pretty deep and so much different from other fighting games at the time. Einhander was another good non-RPG from Square, which was kind of rare for them in that era.

Didn’t Thrill Kill eventually get re-skinned and released with a Wu-Tang Clan license? 😂

FinalFantasyFanatic19d ago

I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.

FinalFantasyFanatic19d ago

I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.

Ravenkiss19d ago

and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. They did Star Ocean 1 & 2 R already, VPL should get the same treatment.

Redgrave19d ago

I assume this to mean that you aren't considering the PSP port to be the remake in this statement? Like a remake of that one?

FinalFantasyFanatic19d ago

That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).

Knightofelemia19d ago

I'd be down for FF8, and Xenogears. But I would also be down for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. And I wish Namco would get off their ass and remake or remaster the Xenosaga trilogy.

FinalFantasyFanatic19d ago

There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.

Final Fantasy Games That Deserve the Remake Treatment

Final Fantasy has a long running history with numerous numbered titles and spin-offs, but which games stand to benefit from a remake?

gold_drake125d ago

i feel like all of them.
well except 2 haha.

shinoff2183125d ago

Agreed. Ff2 though can be made better, so it's not entirely a lost cause. Ff8 will gets its time. I do wish they'd do the old ones. From ff10 and up those ones still hold up pretty well.

kevco33124d ago

Honestly, I've always felt that VII and up 'hold up well' in that regard. The early 3D games just needed a cosmetic update. But the FFVII Remake is so different to the original in execution that a lot of games could be done in a similar fashion and feel far more modern.

I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing (that depends on your personal preference!), just that they could feel very different.

shinoff2183124d ago

Kevco I liked remake but I think your right. Idda been happy with a 1 to 1 remake that looked like ever crisis to. Or both

I'd just love I square would one day give us a turned based one with today's graphics. I can't really think of a jrpg that does that.

andy85124d ago

I'd rather the 13 trilogy just be ported tbh. No matter what you think if it, it shouldn't be the only numbered offline games not playable on new consoles. But naturally I'd play the **** out of 8-12 remakes.

shinoff2183124d ago

I do agree. I'd give it another shot even though I didn't like it at first. My taste change over time. Gta 4 for instance I was so disappointed it lacked so much of what san andreas had I didn't play it for like 5 years. One day went to a semi pro football game(American football) came home drunk and decided to try 4 again. I actually liked it after giving it a fair shot.

Rebel_Scum124d ago

Just make new games. Not every game needs to be remade.

All Of The Final, Final Fantasy Bosses, Ranked

BLG writes: "Final Fantasy bosses are swimming with challenging and exciting battles. Over the course of the series, the game has evolved from turn-based battles to more action-oriented gameplay. That has allowed players to see a variety of battles and types if you’ve played multiple entries across the decades. Bosses you see in more recent games like Final Fantasy 15 are grander in scale than those you might have seen on the Super Nintendo in the 1990s. That doesn’t always equate to them being more legendary, though. "
