Ready Up » Could the Wii U be outdone before it's even released?

With the upcoming release of Xbox SmartGlass, has Microsoft already taken the next evolutionary step up from the Wii U? Mark Paterson thinks so.

This article basically states that MS beat Nintendo by copying them, with smartglass. Ok, how many games for the 360 will be smart glass compatible? And now many Wii U games will use its controller? How many Mario games will be on the 360? Nintendo wins because Nintendo does games, MS does not.

Lucretia4751d ago

true but how many games on the wii-u will use the 2nd screen for more than a map or inventory?

just reminds me of how the ds did things. i dont have confidence in it honestly.

smart glass is lame but still, the wii-u controller is nothing special

PopRocks3594751d ago (Edited 4751d ago )

First of all, I don't think you've ever expressed confidence in anything Nintendo's ever done.

Anyway, while not every game supports it, the Wii U gamepad supports game streaming to the device. Recently it was suggested that latency between the console and controller was actually better than console to TV. Already that is greater functionality than SmartGlass since the latter can't even play games.

It's a bridge between Windows 8 and the 360. Big freakin' deal. I'm not paying $100+ for something that I can do just easily with a controller and a mouse and keyboard.

Lucretia4751d ago

ewww wtf, why are you acting like im defending smart glass lol.

i much rather buy the wii-u then waste my money on smart glass.

regardless, i think both are lame idea's. maybe its because the wii barely got the motion controls right outside of nintendo developed games, so im not expecting anyone but nintendo to use the 2nd screen right either

AO1JMM4751d ago

How many games on xbox 360 Smartglass will allow you to switch fromthetv to the controller and actually play the game on the controller?

raytraceme4751d ago

Smartglass is as useless as it can get when it comes to gaming. No buttons = useless ;-)

Hisiru4750d ago (Edited 4750d ago )

Same old Lucretia. Always trolling Nintendo articles. Really a shame for gamers like the rest of us.

As for the WiiU, I do think WiiU has some potential, but it really needs third party games. I hope Nintendo will continue to convince third parties. Also, maybe it's time for Nintendo to acquire new studios in order to deliver games like Uncharted, God of War, Gears of War etc. Nintendo has good first party titles but maybe they need something different to attract even more players (and maybe even more third party support).

The black WiiU will be day one for me, but I really want to see more third party support.

This is what I hate about American media: BACKLASH!

After a phenomenal popularity & success story expect media backlash to a great extent! - specially if it came outside the United States.

It just happens all the time no matter what the reason is-good or bad.

More importantly GTYD,

How can you win with a "gimmick"? And why would you boast that your company is going in the same "gimmicky" direction as the WiiU?

Hmmm.. it's as if Microsoft and Sony think that the WiiU is a great idea but tell there fanboys the opposite.. Hmmmmmmmm.

(sarcasm)

dotwithshoes4750d ago

How can you win with a gimmick? You realize every console this generation had it's own gimmick. Whether it be bluray on the ps3, Xbox live on the 360(and later the Kinect) or motion controls for the Wii.

Gimmicks are not bad things, the sooner people realize this, the simpler life really becomes. Peace on earth could even happen.

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4750d ago

Dear GameTillYouDrop,

Did you not see "(sarcasm)" at the bottom of my comment?

That is my point Gametillyoudrop, Sony and Microsoft would not be copying Nintendo if they did not think WiiU was a good concept/idea.

The "Gimmick" comment is what their Fanboys think of WiiU.

There is clearly some disconnect between the way Sony and Microsoft see things and their fanboys. Motion controls, Mii avatars, and 2nd Screens "Gimmicks"and yet Sony and Microsoft all spent money and time to add those services to their so-called "EPIC" consoles.

Why? "That is my point Gametillyoudrop, Sony and Microsoft would not be copying Nintendo if they did not think WiiU was a good concept idea."

I hope the people that agreed, did so for the right reason- LOL.

JsonHenry4751d ago

It really depends on which platform actually takes advantage of the tools/input devices in the best way. BOTH of them could fail hard if they just lame it up by using the WiiUpad/smartglass as a gimmick and does not make a compelling reason to want to use it.

Blastoise4751d ago

Forget the Wii U second screen, forget Xbox smart glass. I just want a regular controller lol

Nimblest-Assassin4751d ago

they got you covered

http://www.gamezone.com/pro...

The WiiU:Pro controller

Sadly... people immediately threw flak at Nintendo for "copying" the xbox controller...even though people wanted a regular controller, thus nintendo fans began to defend it immeditely

Almost the same way when All-stars was announced and nintendo fanboys started throwing flak at it for "copying" SSB, even though people asked for it, and some sony fanboys called the game original

What a world

PopRocks3594751d ago (Edited 4751d ago )

@Nimblest-Assassin

Well considering that Nintendo created the traditional controller style, I'd imagine fans would defend them for using a style for their controller that is more well received than most. Nintendo even said they chose that shape because it was ergonomic and comfortable. The 360/GCN controllers are two of the most revered.

As for Playstation All-stars, it doesn't help the game's case that the developers have a photo of their office with a Wii playing Smash Bros. on it. Also when Sony uploaded the latest trailer to YouTube, they actually had it in them to put "Super Smash Bros Brawl" in the tags.

Not saying it doesn't make Nintendo fans hypocritical, but understand that there were good reasons for the defenses and for the flack.

pwnmaster30004751d ago

No one did not call allstar original wtf.
I have not seen anyone in n4g or YouTube or anywhere say that its original.

miyamoto4750d ago (Edited 4750d ago )

Seems to me Ninemdo wants to do battle with Apple in the living room and to an extent the PS Vita. in my opinion they should have put more power on 3DS for this matter like they tried to do with the GBA . It would have made more sense as the 3DS can be used outside the house for gamibg. also. A 3DS XL would be perfect for this.
3DS has the CPU to do it better than the gamepad. This could have been "unique" and stopped the PS Vita on its tracks.

@gametillyoudrop

To say MS copied Nintendo is a reach. I'm sure they didn't just develop SmartGlass overnight. That leak from yesterday, that MS lawyers supposedly had retracted, listed SmartGlass like ability for last year. So maybe it's something they were working on for some time. Plus, the PS3 has used the PSP for years. So does that mean Nintendo is really copying Sony.

Me and some of my online friends had discussed a secondary screen for certain games back in 2006. Did they all copy us. This is just the natural progression of technology. They are all late to that party in this way. Secondary screens would have been helpful on RTSs, RPG and shooters years ago.

Nice fanboy shot at the end. It makes it clear where you would have stood from the beginning.

TekoIie4751d ago (Edited 4751d ago )

"Me and some of my online friends had discussed a secondary screen for certain games back in 2006. Did they all copy us"

Even though the Nintendo DS was released in 2004....

DarkHeroZX4750d ago

Well Sony hasn't done a great job implementing remote play with the vita or psp. Once they get that together I have no doubt it could steal the Wii U's thunder. I mean as long as your ps3 is plugged up at home and you have 3g or wifi on your vita you can game anywhere.

ApolloAdams4751d ago

I understand and agree with most of what you say but how does MS not do games?

This argument of Microsoft having no games when they showed 4 exclusive games and exclusive third party content isn't fair and it is biased actually.

AO1JMM4751d ago

This is N4G so your are talking to yourself when you break out the common sense.

raytraceme4751d ago

They have no new ip's. That's the issue many gamers have with Microsoft. Also the 4 games that you are talkong about are rinse and repeat games nothing much new. Also there is no exclusive third party content just early dlc.

greenpowerz4751d ago

It seems like MS has no games to extremists because MS for the most part only shows games releasing in that year if not the next. This is why despite what the other big two showed at E3 you'll be hard pressed to name any huge exclusives for the holidays.

dcbronco4750d ago

@raytraceme

And Sony fans only buy a few exclusives. So big deal. Sony released LBP2, Resistance 3, Killzone 3 and InFamous 2 all last year. Plus a few others. Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 globally last year. So exclusives are meaningless. Twisted Metal and Starhawk released this year and no one is buying them. Microsoft makes games that people actually buy.

dotwithshoes4750d ago

i admit that it may have been a bit of a stupid statement. Let me see if I can re state what I said a bit better. Nintendo does games better than MS. MS couldn't keep it's console afloat on first party games, Nintendo can. MS aims it's smartglass at Media functions, where the control pad is aimed mostly at games. That's what I meant by Nintendo does games, MS does not.

Microsoft has stated that every Microsoft studio game will be smartglass compatible

greenlantern28144751d ago

and there wont be halo or gears on the wii u. and the success of any of these new systems comes from the gaming companies and how they choose to us the new platforms

TekoIie4751d ago

There was something about halo 4 but its hardly anything like what the Wii U does and isnt used for gameplay purposes.

Wii U will be a unique console compared to its competition and i plan on buying it day one!!!

hennessey864750d ago

But on what they have shown so far, how can you justify a day one purchase.

greenpowerz4751d ago (Edited 4751d ago )

Yes MS slapped glass together in only 12 months so they can copy a gaming only approach from Nintendo :/

Forget about the industry moving that way to begin with. This is the first time the xbox and other brands connected mobile and other devices in the home to a console ;) oh I kidd I kidd

I'm sure if MS still had mobile hardware, glass would have already tested the waters while all of the other parties/partners finalized their own software for glass on their ends. The leaked 720 docs suggest the plans have been in the making for over a couple of years when it comes to a unified experience.

MS isn't trying to compete with tablet gaming, they're trying to be a multi media hub. Sure MS knows this glass tech weakens Nintendo's tablet hype in the social multi media aspects of the Wii-u tablet functionality. Just a little harmless deflation of Nintendo's rhetoric while pushing living room hub approach. Obviously MS is trying to put gamers *in the experience* with advanced full motion tracking and virtual reality and not adding more hardware *obstructing gamers* in MS vision of experience(gaming of course)

These kind of articles are reaching so hard to believe that Sony and Microsoft can achieve the same types of gameplay on 360/ps3 with Smartglass and Vita respectively. Just saying you can crossplay on Vita isn't the same experience! WiiU gamepad allows for seamless lag-free interaction, which neither Sony nor Microsoft can claim with their attempts. Not to mention that neither the Vita or Smartglass will allow for addition players to operate within the same game while performing different functions and having different experiences all while never leaving the same game environment. Nice try though!

kneon4751d ago (Edited 4751d ago )

There is absolutely nothing preventing Sony or Microsoft from doing everything the Wii U can do.

Microsoft is at a bit of a disadvantage since any phone or tablet supporting smartglass doesn't have the physical controls, so you would use it along with a controller. But with the vita Sony can do everything the Wii U can do and more, but at a considerably higher price.

The Vita is a full portable console in it's own right with ample local processing power. It can run whatever software the developer chooses to write for it. It does not need to merely be a portable version of what is on the console. And any phone or tablet running smartglass is powerful enough to do many of the same things.

So from a technical perspective the Vita can do all the Wii U can do and more. The difference is that not every PS3 owner has a Vita and not every Vita owner has a PS3. That means that outside of first party games it will likely be rare to see the Vita utilized in this manner.

The advantage of smartglass is that most people that game probably have at least one device that can use it, or they soon will regardless of their interest in smartglass.

Klad4750d ago

"So from a technical perspective the Vita can do all the Wii U can do and more"

How do you know this when Nintendo haven't revealed everything that the Wii U can do?

kneon4750d ago (Edited 4750d ago )

It's a little thing I like to call logic.

I can guarantee you the Wii U controller is not anywhere near as powerful as the Vita nor even as powerful as a low end tablet.

Because if it were then it would cost just as much. Also the fact that Nintendo have stated that the rendering happens in the Wii U rather than on the controller, and that using 2 controllers causes a significant increase in the resources required shows that the controller itself has minimal processing power. It is essential a graphics terminal with gaming controls.

The big difference between the Wii U controller and using a Vita, tablet or phone is that the latter can run their own code completely independent of the console. Because of this they place almost no additional burden on the console's resources. It would be no different than when you are playing online multiplayer and your console is the host.

The Wii U itself has no magical abilities, it's just a new console that from what we've seen is a little more powerful than the PS3 or 360. So it all comes down to the controller and the software. And as I've stated the controller is nothing special, if anything the Vita offers more control options since it's multi-touch and offers the back touch pad as well.

ChunkyLover534751d ago

I like the idea of SmartGlass, but lets be honest here, the Wii U packs in the tablet with every system, which gives it the advantage because everyone that buys one will have one. The SmartGlass thing is only applicable to people who might already have a tablet. This is why the Wii U has the advantage over the PS3/Vita combo as well.

Hardly anyone has a Vita, so its going to be hard to get something going between the two unless they pack them together or something.

Nintendo faced the same hate when they released the Wii, guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. As soon as I can pre-order a Wii U, I'm there though.

attilayavuzer4751d ago

Actually its applicable to anyone with a tablet or smartphone, which in the realm of gaming amounts to roughly 120% of people. What remains to be seen-and what will be the deciding factor of who wins this-is how Microsoft ends up utilizing it. I can really see it being swept under the rug though unfortunately.

ChunkyLover534751d ago

I personally don't own a tablet or Smartphone. I mean you could say everyone owns a Blu Tooth headset and that is why Sony didn't pack one in with the PS3, but Microsoft packed a headset with every console and so everyone uses a mic.

I see people wanting to use a tablet like the Wii U Pad, which is made specifically for the Wii U console. I don't think very many people will want to use a phone of iPad and use it with their Xbox 360. It might get some people's attention, but I don't think it'll reach as wide an audience as the Wii U will.

Hotspur4751d ago

Maybe Sony will add the PS Vita with the PS4. lol

beerkeg4751d ago

Games for the Wii U are going to be made from the ground up for the controller, and everyone will have the controller if they have a Wii U. The same can't be said for the competition.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv7211d ago (Edited 11d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX11d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK11d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog11d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx42d ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS42d ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.
