Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Update – Interview, New Details

When it was first launched back in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV for PC was criticized by players and the media, and eventually the planned PS3 version was postponed. Since then, Square Enix decided to reshuffle the leading developers of the game, with Naoki Yoshida now acting as Director and Producer. His challenge is to helm the 2.0 version of Final Fantasy XIV, which is a re-imagination of the original release. It will mark a new beginning for the game when it gets launched this winter, coinciding with the release of the anticipated PS3 version.

Whoa and it's coming straight from Sony's blog.

You know, you really got admire Square's commitment to fixing this game. Any other company would've abandoned this game or made it F2P to try to recoop their loses, but Square remade the game from the ground up--they even remade the game engine, and all the content inside of it, and they are adding new content as well.

FFXIV actually gives me more faith Square than anything else they're doing at the moment.

Myst4765d ago

Yep same here. That guy is making FFXIV golden and has re-kindled my faith in the game. May not be the complete successor to FF11 but he sure is making it pretty close while keeping it fresh and new.

They actually did for a bit make the game have no subscription fee to keep people playing while they were overhauling everything.

jc485734765d ago

just imagine that the next generation of consoles is coming soon, so players only have like what? only 3 years to play?

Seventh_Blood_Reborn4765d ago

It will work on PS4 too, and I see no reason why it should not.

SE has put too many efforts ( time + money ) in this project to let the game die on console in about 3 years.

Dno4765d ago

what? are you mad? ff11 came out ten years ago on ps2 and its still running with regular updates and WoW came out in 2004 and 8 years later its still going.

Also Se can easily make it on ps4 and the PC version has been out for 2 years. MMos unless they do not have a lot of subs dont fo away because consoles do. theres a lot of people on ps2 playing ff11 as we speak.

MMO games are most likely to be ported for the further next gen systems of Sony.

Like DUST 514 it will cross platform connectivity with PS3/PS Vita and PS4.

Final Fantasy 14 ( the proper version ) coming soon for PS3 ppl!

Great stuff.

Godmars2904765d ago

Is it just me, or is Square only doing announcements for remakes, next gen and damage control for past current releases? Also sudden announcements for formally unannounced games.

It’s really old now. All great MMOs decline.

PRIMORDUS12h ago

Also who wants to keep paying a monthly fee every month, there are other options like Guild Wars 2 😁with no monthly fee and while not that many people overall compared to FF XIV, it did increase to about 21 mil now.

Sephiroushin1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I prefer to pay since i do not like guild wars and it keep kids away, but FF14 decreased on quality since they started to make it "more accessible", tried throne and liberty and while it was okay it has so many issues, same for dune awakening... Its time to start making a new FF MMO

kaewcha73412h ago

Looks like Square Enix is self-aware but still stuck in place, they see the player drop and apologize for the bugs, but nothing really changes. Shame, FFXIV used to be the gold standard

Servbot4111h ago

My entire free company has stopped playing. The writing has consistently gotten worse and the content is sparse and lacking; unless you are a hardcore player there's very little for you to do. They are over-catering to the people who will grind three+ times a week on a single fight for multiple months when the playerbase by large doesn't want that sort of content. Square needs to dedicate more resources to the game instead of wasting them on mobile and other live service slop.

The biggest factor for me is the way they butchered job design over the years , the casualization and over simplification really hurt a good chunk of enjoyment I used to have . Jobs lost any form of complexity and just became " press glowing button" DDR style for fighting where the gameplay loop is a about the 2 minute burst window . They removed most DoTS, timer mechanics , cast times, pets, RNG ect and all around homogenized everything . When you try and can cater to everyone ... you cater to no one .

Do you not see this happening during development? Like, why are we apologizing after the fact instead of stopping it during development?

Stopac4d ago

Criticism and reflection occur after the fact. The apology acknowledges the past criticisms with the new expansion and they're keeping transparency with players about it. Now that they've acknowledged it - it will be interesting to see what kind of cycle we'll get with a new expansion and I wonder if they're planning something special with beast master since they didn't mention it in the last live letter.

anast4d ago

It's all good, as long as the price of the product decreases.

Stopac4d ago

The base game and expansion go on sale all the time and doesn't stay full price for very long since a new expansion is on the horizon.

If you're stating they should reduce the price of new expansions or the sub fee, no, that's not gonna happen lmao people aren't even complaining about that. They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy.

anast4d ago

"They are criticizing the same old pattern of content that releases and how it is devolving into mediocracy."

The product should be cheaper then.

PapaBop4d ago

I was unhappy with DT and have spent far less time in it than any other expansion but it's things like this that makes me respect Yoshi P. It's rare for such a high profile developer to be so candid in his assessment on a live game.

Stopac4d ago

Same, i've found my self resubbing every two patches instead of keeping it up. Don't own a home in the game so there's no point in keeping a constant sub going. The post story is getting interesting though.
