'Resident Evil 6' seems to be going more towards action than horror

The Verge: In recent years, the Resident Evil franchise has evolved into something very different from where it originated. What was once a series about conserving ammo, low body counts and horrible voice acting has become a series about blasting away with machine guns, high action and, well, the voice acting is still pretty iffy. But it's the shift from survival horror to action that seems to have turned off some fans. Capcom seems focused on continuing the franchise's transformation, though, at least if the Resident Evil 6 is any indication.

Great article and I have to agree. Most of what was shown in the E3 demo in Microsoft's Press Conference was mainly based on action. It kind of makes me sad that Resident Evil is fading away it's horror genre.

CommonSense4331d ago

i kinda of agree; but with RE4, capcom sort of painted themselves into a corner. they went towards action and let the story escalate. at this point, they really have no choice but to go over the top (while they're in the main series 1, 2, 3, 4...).

i think they could still do throw backs as side stories; but as far as the main story goes, i think our expectations need to change. we need to start judging the game based on the quality of the action, atmosphere and set pieces...not the scare factor.

lashes2ashes4331d ago

Dead space 2 is full of action and it's still really scary, done right full blown action can be just as scary as the older games.

saladthieves4331d ago (Edited 4331d ago )

Dead Space 2 was okay, but Dead Space 1 has a better horror aspect IMO. It seems like EA is going the same route as Capcom. Isaac now has a cover system in Dead Space 3 and there's co-op, all unnecessary for a horror game coming from the roots of Dead Space 1.

Don't get me wrong, co-op is very fun for certain games (like Borderlands) but for a horror game it kind of doesn't belong there. The sense of being with someone else makes you feel more secure - if you get in trouble they'll easily rescue you. There's no feeling of desperation, isolation, loneliness or vulnerability that makes the horror aspect shine. It's no longer you vs the bad scary stuff out there!

Capcom just doesn't care. They're willing to sacrifice the heart and soul of what defined R.E games for a more block-buster action oriented theme IF more cash will roll in. This makes the game more accessible to a wider audience. It means that since it's more action oriented, they can remove some of the challenges, such as limited supply of ammo - equip the player with loads of it since they'll be moving around quite a lot. Take cover if you're just being careless so that you can surprise them predictable zombies that used to surprise YOU.

They (Capcom) think that giving a character more guns, ammo and moves makes the game okay as long as the zombies are still there. This reduces the horror aspect of the game, and makes it more of an action game. Sure, they get more sales from it, but it sure as hell won't resemble its forerunners that defined what the Resident Evil games are about.

Son_Lee4331d ago

No fucking shit. Doesn't take a genius to notice that. Doesn't mean it won't be scary, though.

Prcko4331d ago

and that is the reason why i won't buy this piece of cr*p
they don't wanna make games what fans like, they making games like they want!
good luck with that ''brain mind''

achmetha4331d ago

while i agree with you. they've openly said that re5 sold more than the other resident evil games. it's more action based..and we all know capcom is in it for the money.

Kratoscar20084330d ago

Its nonsense, RE 4 got:
Gamecube release.
PS2 release
Wii release
PC release
Phone release
HD release PS3
HD release 360
How RE5 could surpasse RE4, it caNT.

CLOUD19834331d ago

Yangus4331d ago

Final Fantasy XIII-2 not best, but good game.

I hope FF Versus XIII awesome!

fastNslowww4331d ago

Silent Hill has become action, lol?

Have you actually played Downpour? it's the only TRUE survival HORROR game this generation, it stays close to it's roots.

Inception4330d ago (Edited 4330d ago )

Wrong. Play Siren: The New Translation and Amnesia: The Dark Decent. That's the TRUE SURVIVAL HOROR game for this generation!

There Will Never Be Another Resident Evil 6 (And That Sucks)

A rough gem that may never get the proper treatment it deserves.

^^ I don't want what the author was smoking.

-Foxtrot397d ago

It’s this thing where after enough time people start coming out to defend bad games for some strange reason

I mean hey if you liked it good for you but it was a f****** awful RE game.

Capcom are finally back on track and now people are crying about their shitty mistakes? No thanks.

RpgSama395d ago

I'd take a full blown remake of RE6 based around a GREATLY expanded Leon part and make it even more horror.

That might be something I would be interested in, do not care about any of the other parts of that game.

MadLad395d ago

I couldn't even get through the demo.
Years later I bought it for $3 for PC. I played about 5 minutes into it and uninstalled it.

babadivad395d ago (Edited 395d ago )

RE6 was better than 5. RE6 just took the series to the conclusion that started with 4.

RE4 was the inaugural title in the action game trilogy.

RE9 will be the likely end of the first person psychological thriller trilogy.

They'll switch it up for RE10 or more likely titled RE-X.

hotnickles395d ago

5 is vastly better than 6 imo

TheEnigma313395d ago

RE5 is way better than 6. Stop lying to yourself

FallenAngel1984397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

“But all this is solely with respect to how fans felt back in 2013 when Resident Evil 6 had just been released. The game resulted in the series getting indefinitely killed off until 5 years later when we got Resident Evil 7 and balance was restored yet again. ”

1.) Resident Evil 6 came out in 2012, not 2013

2.) A series getting killed off means no titles at all released in a time period. Silent Hill, Dead Space, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve & Siren fans would love to see how you can say RE was on the same level of dormancy. In that 5 year time period we had a number of remasters that kept the series alive and kicking. RE1 02ms remaster even broke sales records during the period between RE6 and RE7.

3. Way to disrespect Resident Evil: Revelations 2. It was released during that RE6-RE7 period. It along with its predecessor were mainline titles that kept the horror roots of the series alive in comparison to RE5 and RE6. RE: R1 in particular even introduced the ability to walk and shoot into the series, a feature we can all be grateful for that in modern RE titles. The director RE: R1 later went on to direct RE7 and the director of RE: R2 later went to to direct the RE2 & RE4 remakes.

Immagaiden397d ago (Edited 397d ago )

“Resident Evil 6 is often maligned as the worst entry in the Resident Evil series and is cited as the cause behind the long death of the franchise.”

Titles in the Resident Evil series such as Survivor, Gaiden, Dead Aim, Outbreak, Operation Raccoon City, Umbrella Corps, & Resistance we’re received far worse than RE6.

And death of the franchise?

RE6 was still one of the most commercially successful games in the series, guaranteeing the franchise’s future. Compare how underwhelming sales of Dead Space 3, Silent Hill: Downpour. Alone in the Dark: Illumination, Dino Crisis 3, Fatal Frame: Maiden in Black Water, Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2, and Metroid: Other M which caused their respective series to go into a long period of dormancy without any rereleases to even keep activity up.

RE however still had a significant number of titles released and rereleased after RE6. Not only that but development for RE7 started a short time after its predecessor came out, meaning there was never a development time that the series could be considered dead. There hasn’t been a single year that Capcom stopped either developing, releasing, or rereleasing Resident Evil games. Let’s not act like the 5 year period between RE6 and RE7 is such a longer time compared to the 4 year period between RE4 and RE5 as well as RE7 and RE8. We can pretty much expect RE9 in either 2025 or 2026, and you can be certain that Capcom will still release other RE tiles leading up to it

TheEnigma313395d ago (Edited 395d ago )

Man go some where with this. Only a few like this game. Why would they remake a garbage game no one likes risking money because it won't sell? RE 6 is dumpster drippings, sorry.

MIDGETonSTILTS17395d ago

It wasn’t that good, even if you enjoyed it like me.
