Jordan Mechner, Jerry Bruckheimer Talk Prince of Persia Movie

GameDaily writes:

With the stunning success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise still cooking, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and developer Jordan Mechner talk about their upcoming movie adaptation based upon Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Bruckheimer intends to release Prince of Persia: Sands of Time in the summer of 2009, and he has aboard Jordan Mechner, the creator of the 11-SKU Prince of Persia franchise that first took the gaming world by storm back in 1989.

"The Prince of Persia characters are wonderful and they exist in a period of time and a venue that's interesting."

"Why would I make National Treasure versus whatever other people are making? ... I've played the game ... it's a great game ... and I believe the movie is one people will want to go see," says Bruckheimer.

"If I'd tried to adapt the game's storyline beat for beat into a screenplay, we would have wound up with a 'B'-level survival-horror movie about a warrior prince who spends most of his time fighting off ravaging, zombie-like sand creatures -- basically, Resident Evil in the desert," says Jordan Mechner

Instead, Mechner's efforts went into turning his game into "an epic, swashbuckling, action-adventure movie in the tradition of Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mask of Zorro, and Pirates of the Caribbean," he says.

Currently, the film is in preproduction, with Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) signed on as director but no cast yet determined. The team has begun scouting locations with an eye towards shooting in June if the writers' strike is settled soon.

I'm interested how he's going to adapt the Prince of Persia series into the big screen. I'm a big fan of the game.

Aside from Mike Newell whose films I don't like much, everything about this film is looking more than promising. Plus with Mechner working along with producers, I know this will be different from all other game based movies.

im expecting a Pirates of the Caribbean style movie.

make it appeal to all ages to draw maximum profits, probably at the cost of the original source material.

im sorry to disagree but this movie needs a double R needs to be like Warrior With in..very bloody =D

mighty_douche4668d ago

no, i completely agree, id love them to make it for adults but movies are big bucks and there for they aim them at as many people as possible.

lets take the Terminator series...

T1 = 18+
T2 = 15+
T3 = 12

this would be a 15's max, sorry im not sure of the american equivalent.

I see what you mean...but imagine 300 as PG13 or SAW as PG? that is very odd. what I mean is this games needs to be bloody as it can get but then again since is going to be named Sands of time I think the monsters wont have blood but sand like in first one...
so PG13 for first one then R for warrior with in(if that will be the sequel) =D

I think the most blood you will see in the movie will be the odd cut suffered by the hero. Most of the enimies, as you say, will have sand blood and will just fizz away when cut by the hero.

The added advantage for them to make it have mass market appeal is the mechandise. Figures and toys etc can make a tidy profit by themselves but if the movie wasn't made to be seen by kids that they would lose all of this.

There is no way the movie will be double R or R, rated since there hoping to grab the video game fan audience who is also anywhere from 8-25 (In general).

Not to mention if it's R, it limits the audience (limits the $$$$), I got a feeling it's going to be alot like pirates of the caribean.

After reading this i am interested and believe this could have a shot at being a good movie.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" slash "Pirates of the Caribbean" styling, i can live with that. Sounds good lets get to work!!
