Gematsu: "Atlus has begun development on Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3DS, Famitsu reveals this week."
And I just vomited in my mouth. Looks like the console JRPG is pretty much dead.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! I already can't wait for this game! I hope it's similar to Strange Journey or Dark Spire (DS games).... INCREDIBLE game btw!
-I thought so too, but then it crawled out of the grave and muttered... Xenobladeeeeee... :D
another great game to the 3ds solid line up of games :D
Yay for ps1 gfx on 3ds.
Yay for an incredible RPG experience that doesn't need high end graphics to be fun. Yay for Strange Journey, Dragon Quest, Dark Spire and Final Fantasy 8 because it gave me much more fun and it's more of a RPG than Final Fantasy XIII (which has beautiful graphics) Yay for games giving you fun because at the end of the day, if it's not fun, there is no need to play it but if it's fun it doesn't matter if it has high end graphics or not. Yay for your unsuccessful trolling comment which makes you look like an ignorant. Yay yay yay.
Devs surely love evading HD when it comes to JRPGs, and resorting to handhelds for this matter. But one can't resist wondering: What would the devs do when even handhelds go HD? Would JRPG devs completely stop making JRPGs? On the side note: The Wii-U makes me excited, not because I love Nintendo since I'm a PS3 gamer most of the time, but because Wii-U will mark the era of all-HD consoles. This means, devs that made JRPGs for the Wii in SD will be forced to make them in HD. This means the PS3, and even the Xbox 360, will enjoy real JRPGs that would have been in SD had Wii-U remained an SD platform.
@VsAssassin There are some great RPG games on the Wii (like Xenoblade, Last Story etc) but it's exclusive to Nintendo. In my opinion, there is only one good JRPG game in HD: Lost Odyssey. I consider Demon's Soul a WRPG.
damn... double post.
3ds has Gamecube level power, if not higher. -_-; You can disagree all you want, it won't make it untrue. A console that can play MHG3 with dynamic shading and at a higher framerate than its wii forebear is far stronger than a ps1, which can't even play a dumbed down mh.
Not happy about this. Really wanted it to be a console game. Not buying a 3DS since I have no use for handhelds. No sale.
My Money Is Ready!!!!!!!!!!
good i hope every game comes to 3ds so crybabies will stop playing all together!im going to cry because a game i want is going to a system i dont like.so its going to be bad because its on a system i dont like!!! now i will cry about it!this is how gamers are today what a joke!
Wow. I was really looking forward to the next SMT game after playing Persona 3 but there's no way I'm buying a 3DS just for this game. Bring it to consoles or even Vita and I'll bite.
Persona the golden it's coming out for the vita this year and it's gonna be way better than this.
@tinezedw For your tastes, but not for a lot of people. I actually hate the Persona series and it has nothing to do with Shin Megami Tensei (main series). You said it will be better... I am not sure about that, because it's a matter of taste/opinion but we can be sure that it's yet ANOTHER port from consoles. Most of the fans already finished this game on PS2. Vita needs some original games and Shin Megami Tensei IV on the 3DS seems to be a new game, not a remake/port of something we already played.
Yes only this one game. And that other one. ... and that other one. The thing is, there are plenty of great games on and coming to the 3ds. It seems weird to me that so many people say that "one game isn't enough" when there are most likely several that they would want or like for it. Admit it: the games have nothing to do with it for most of those bitching in this fashion. Just the name of the console they are played on. And if Smt is your the of game, you're kidding yourself if you think the vita has a better upcoming lineup than the 3ds for your tastes.
Well then, I hope Atlus decides to bring it to the west, other wise no western fans will get to enjoy this game.
That's disappointing. Had it been a home console title, I would have bought it Day 1. Since I don't have a 3DS, I'll have to skip it.
keep the tears coming we love it!!!!!and i love the getting disagrees it usually means the person is right or telling the truth on this site.so i know yinz can do better then 4!!!
Wow...I...I am speechless. The 3DS? Really? A Shin Megami Tensei not on a home console? A main game on a portable? I mean...Atlus...Atlus, men, what the effing hell? Really? That's is probably one of the most disappointing news I have heard in years. This probably means that the next Persona will go straight to the 3DS too. Wow...not cool. No cheers and no buy.
If Persona 5 is exclusive to the 3DS I will take a big dump on Atlus headquarter's door. Making a handheld exclusive sequel to a series that debuted on console is extremely stupid.
Fire emblem. Monster Hunter. Just 2 examples that disprove your assessment.
Not sure how i feel about this... I have no problems the side story games/remakes be made on a handheld but a full fledged main series game just does not feel right. The last full game in the SMT series was Nocturne on the PS2. We waited so long for another console game in the series. This move screams 'the 3DS has a large install base' lets make a game in the series for it. Hopefully the Persona series does not get that kind of treatment & is released as a console game.
Surely the install base for 360/PS3 combined is much greater than the 3DS. I think it's more to do with them needing a much higher budget for HD development. With a few exceptions, it's fair to say that the Japanese have struggled to adapt and I think handheld games are a safe option for them - As a business, I guess you're always going to go for the choice that makes the most profit.
wait isn't Strange Journey Megami Tensei IV? or are they porting that to the 3DS?
From what i know Strange Journey is considered to be the 4th game in the SMT series, but it felt more like a side game in the main series for me personally. If they are porting that over to the 3DS that is even more stupid. I personally see the main games are SMT 1, SMT 2 & SMT 3, all other games not numbered are side games. Not like any of those are not worthy to be part of the main series they are still very good games.
wished on wiiU or PS3. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhfxck
What? Strange Journey is IV. Port? Or do they mean V?
Wasn't the last one on ds? are people actually getting worked up about this when it's completely expected? They ported devil survivor to 3ds recently. When the hell will people learn about the what goes into jrpg development and realise that HD gaming is too expensive a media for it. it's why so many were on ps1 and ps2 those were least powerful systems in the market at the time and easier to develop massive rpgs for. It shocks me people don't understand this when FFXIII took almost 5 years to develop. Then wii gets 3 huge rpgs in a single year. Nevermind that DS has been huge on rpgs for the last decade. It's freaking logic people.
ATLUS have released RPGS for the XBOX 360 and PS3. So yeah, logic dictates that it is expected of a numbered entry of a Shin Megami Tensei game to appear on console too. Or is SMT too niche compare to...oh I don't know, let just say Catherine? You are right the side projects were not expected to be released on consoles, and the 3ds/psp makes sense. But the numbered ones? Absolutely unexpected. I mean it's freaking logic guy. Not to mention the other JRPGs already released for the PS3 and XBOX 360 that are even more niche, like the Atelier series, Disgaea, Agarest and others. Did they set the world on fire with their sales? Maybe not, and that is probably the reason why this is not coming out. But to say that is was a shoe in for a 3ds release, when ATLUS releases more niche games like; 3D Dot Game Heroes, Catherine, Demon's Soul on console. Not to mention stuff like The King of Fighters, Persona 4 Arena, Dragon's Crown, Spectral Force 3, Operation Darkness, Divinity II, The Cursed Crusade. Yeah, your logic freaking fail. Cheers
Perfect examples of what i'm talking about. Cathrine is a story based puzzle game with considerably less depth than xenoblade, demon souls is a lonewolf these days because of the other games you mentioned. Even Demon Souls is barely an jrpg. The fact is they can make bigger games with more depth and story with less resources on lower powered consoles. HD failures cost a shitload more money then a ds or wii failure. Ever notice how disgaea 3 stayed in japan? Notice how Agarest took 3 years to localize with no signs of a sequel? Notice how much generic jrpg fluff makes up the Atelier series? (ugh) More then half of those games you mentioned wont even leave japan because of the cost of translating HD RPGs.
@Shnazzyone Not saying you don't have a point. Hell studios are closing left and right, and the game industry is looking to be separated into very small studios and huge studios. Medium size studios are dying off or scaling back, it's either adapt to small hardware or die off. Trust me I get what you are saying and it is completely understandable why ATLUS is doing it. I don't really blame ATLUS, but this might be the last nail in the coffin for SMT on consoles. To finally realize that Persona 4 may very well have been the last time a Shin Megami game got release on home console, well it kinda suck and it stings a little. Hopefully ATLUS, at the very least, can release the new, and old/remake, etc., games through PSN and XBOX live in the future. Here's hoping. Cheers
Not surprised to see SMT on a Nintendo platform. After all SMT started on SNES in the heyday. Hope its as good as Nocturne.
lol, so many people are mad. It is probably cheaper to make it for the handhelds too. RPGs seem to be going to the handhelds. I guess that is fine, since most of the games probably wouldn't sell on the consoles. Most people don't like Anime looking games, which is sad. It is all about the graphics & online these days. Which is something RPGs seem to lack.
makes soooooo much sense to create a sequel on hardware that can only pump out ps2 style graphics.. oh well, if its scores great, ill get it if it looks like ps1! it would be sooo much better had it been developed on vita but eff it.. thats why i have em both
sarcasm in the 1st sentence...
HELL YES! The 3ds is on a roll. Resident Evil Revelations, Kingdom Hearts DDD, Monster Hunter 4, and Shin Megami Tensei 4, those are some massive 3rd party games. E3 is going to be nuts!
