Despite the fact that Diablo III is one of the biggest PC games ever, many retailers aren't stocking it or any other PC titles. A self-described PC Gamer breaks down the decline of PC gaming in the marketplace
Yeah, PC gaming only made $18.5 billion last year. It was only the highest revenue ever for it. Diablo 3 only sold 3.5 million in 24 hours to be the fastest selling PC game ever. Yeah, PC gaming is dead... /sarcasm
Lol,people who claim PC gaming is dead like to ignore that 18.5 billion posted last year....PC gaming has went digital...Why should blizzard or any company deal with retail?they could make more profit selling digital products and not share a dime with local stores..
Remember that 3.5 million isn't even including digital sales.
Having to sift through the garbage approved on this site is getting tiring. Yet another article from a person that has absolutely no clue what they are talking about. It would literally take 15 minutes of research to show just how silly this opinion piece truly is. Steam is mopping up in PC gaming. Can we please mark this trash down so just maybe a moderator will fail it for lack of knowledge and a waste of bandwidth? 27 articles submitted 10 failed. Maybe that's a hint for N4G owners and operators.
"Are new gaming headlines dieing?"
MUST BE CONSOLE PLAYERS MAKING THAT CLAIM!
As a console only player, I resent that comment... but you're probably right. ;p
For those of us who live in the 21st. Century we use the New Technology of Digital Downloads and The Cloud to play games. "Who the Hell still uses DISC anyway.....Cavemen"? * Even with AAA MMO after AAA MMO being released, * Diablo III selling 7 million units in a week, PC Gaming doing $19 Billion in sales, * On target to pass Nintendo, Sony, and MS all combined by 2015, * With the most phenomenal game ever made DAY Z setting the PC world on fire, * Along with Guild Wars 2 and about 15 other AAA PC Exclusives yet to be released this year, * TV's being made with built in Cloud services * Tablets and iPhones killing hand helds. we still get the stupid "is PC Gaming Dead Articles". Are you serious or just that STUPID! Consoles have one foot in the grave buddy and the Cloud and the PC have a shovel and plenty of dirt to move. I actually feel sorry for those who can't see that this is the END GAME for consoles. Game Over, no reset just PERMA-DEATH!!
I gonna say this author got exactly what he wanted in your response. And consoles aren't going anywhere. Neither are tablets or phones. This site is baiting. And you bit. Edit: enough with the pc elitism. the word would be transcend my friend. in the end, its only fun and games. or at least it should be.
I might have agreed with you... but I don't. Lots of people still use a disc, particularly those not willing to give up their rights as consumers just yet. But that's a console thing, mostly; PC gamers, apparently, have been giving up their rights for years. Cloud gaming is NOT going to replace console gaming. If it does, good luck playing anything when your internet goes down. And good luck with the same quality.
Yes... PC, X360, PS3, Wii, Iphone, Android gaming are all going to be dead on 21 December 2012 according to Nostradamus.
@MAJ0R Which is how most PC gamers buy their games for anybody who isn't aware. I'm sure it easily sold over 5 million.
Terms of Quality? It's getting worst... stuff is getting rushed.. not in PC.. everywhere.. it's everything for money then anything else... each day it's worst... gaming is not the same.
definitely. Developers would rather meet a deadline than spend more time on polishing their products. And they've certainly been abusing their ability to add patches and DLC post-release. It's gone from patches to enable or fix issues "day-one" (which could certainly be avoided with proper testing) to charging for locked content on the disc...at least in the worst cases.
Not for me it's not. Now that Gamestop sells Steam vouchers I have been trading my 360 & PS3 games in for them.
Not even close. Ever heard of Steam?
PC gaming I think is doing poorly at best, but it doesn't help everything is going to PS3/360 and random games are made for PC only. I think it would help more if their was more PC only titles and not weak ones but big ones.
Laugh out loud. 18.5 billion sure sounds bad.
FYI there are more exclusives for PC than on PS3 and Xbox360 combined!!
Is journalistic integrity dead?
It is on N4G. lol
@jim: that would be a yes.
PC gaming is dead...for individuals that only console game and do not follow PC gaming and the fact that it went pretty much digital. +18 billion is far from dead
Yup. PC is dead. Nintendo is dead. Sony is dead. MS is dead. I swear people love the idea of some kind of apocalypse to garner attention. NO current platform is gonna die ( anytime soon or foreseeable ) its just spreading outward to new platforms. Its not dying. Its growing.
Is Gaming Dead? Games are not being sold in every store. I could not find games at Guess or my local convienince store. Is gaming really dead? CLICK MY Article, IM DESPERATE !!! PLEASE PLEASE !!
It's not DEAD! Wrong term to use It's more - irrelevant Back in say 1998 - 2000 The PC had a huge amount of exclusives Now - The majority can already be played on either PS3 or 360. I have pretty much only used my Gaming PC for only The Witcher 2 and Diablo 3, thats it. The Witcher 2 is now mulitplatform (at the time I bought it, it wasen't). So it is not DEAD, but it's more irrelevant. Not many games at all, that I can't already play on consoles.
Yeah like Shogun 2, Arma 2-3/Day Z, Real BF3, Guild Wars 2, King Arthur 2, Hawken, Mech Warrior Online, Firefall, End of Nations, C&C Generals 2, Planetside 2 etc etc Sure am glad those are all available on my 360 and PS3.
Please give me all the AAA titles being released this year and if not all of them (Perhaps a couple) are available on PC along with consoles. Also tell me how many exclusives PS3 and Xbox 360 are releasing this year and if PC exclusives being released this year alone aren't more than the PS3 or Xbox 360! Aside from Call of Duty, please let me know any other console exclusive that has sold as immeasurably as Diablo 3 on the first day alone. Just because you don't play on YOUR PC which deems it irrelevant to you, doesn't justify you making a generalization that PC gaming is irrelevant. So Max Payne 3 was released on Xbox 360 & PS3 and on Friday will be released on PC but because someone got it on the 360 i guess that makes the PS3 and PC irrelevant!
Well if you believe the articles posted here then PC Gaming is dead, Console Gaming is dead and mobile shall inherit the earth. Thank goodness I don't belive the articles around here.
PC gaming ain't dead. It's just playing second fiddle to consoles as it's been doing for the past 27 years.
Pc is on the comeback people are sick of waiting for next gen, even retail the stock of pc games is jumping my local stores were down to one shelf now back to a full wall im sick of waiting rig up.
PC gaming is what moves the industry forward. Mostly because of Indies.
This guy bases it off the fact that there are almost no PC games in stores now, and that worries him since he is coming from a console gaming background. But he doesn't realize that PC gaming is almost all about digital downloads now, and that is why stores arent stocking up. It's because consumers are finding better service, deals and convenience through digital means. It is actually making PC gaming better then ever right now.
Steam sucks! Froze my account saying it was hacked or some sh*t, only bought Stalker but was loving it...and yes I tried its impossible to reach them about this.
Stop approving stupid articles like this.
pc games at retail are almost dead. The pc market moved on to dd already, just like music and movies. There isn't even a place to rent movies/games in my town anymore. The only reason console games are mostly retail for now is because the console makers have made it that way.
Or could it be that not everybody owns a credit card so digital distribution on consoles isn't feasible?
console gaming is closer to dead than pc gaming. PC gaming is adapting to the true mainstream gaming scene quicker and easier than consoles can. Thats why companies like Nexon are in a position where they can just buy ea and companies like 38 studios and thq are either struggling or gone.
No god dammit
lol....pc gaming makes more money than all 3 last gen consoles combined (ps3/360/wii are last gen when spoken of in the same sentance as pc) maybe the new consoles will, all combined, be able to give pc a run for it's money, lol....but i highly doubt it, ms and sony will go, again, into millions and millions and millions of negitive profit for years again no wonder they are in no hurry to make new consoles, even though nearly all console games are sub-hd, covered in jaggies and choking the machines to even run at 20-30 frames per second almost any aaa pc game from the past 5 years makes uncharted 3 look last gen if anything, consoles will be dead after this gen, whats the point, they are outdated within a year or two tops of launch, and as we can see, for all this talk of the terrible economy, every seems perfectly fine buying new $200-$400 smart phones every couple years, and buying new $400-$700 tablets, and buying new $600-$800 laptops every few years i know i am, even if i spend $2000 a year on gaming, be it console games, pc games, a new gpu, handhelds, apps, who gives a rats ass i know morons who spend $30,000 $50,000 on a wedding, or $35,000 on a car, or $6000 on a 1 week vacation everyone has their own priorities, personally, i want the best when i game, thats why i game on pc, and have every console for the rare title i cannot get on pc yet, i say yet, because every game will be on pc soon enough uncharted 3 will actually look playable to me in a few years when i emulate it in 1600p with some proper anti aliasing.
I would also like to add in that several/many? indie studios are building their way to the top because of PC sales. The market is healthy for both big and small...you just gotta bring something of interest.
Strange... my PC seems alive and well, had to defrag the disc and use disc cleanup but she is still going strong, it would appear this guys jimmies were rustled by the growing PC market.
Aww, not this kind of article again :P Every year some of these articles pop up lol. But again: Steam, my friends. Steam, it's the holy grail. It's awesome. It's cheap. Use it, and you will choose PC gaming over consoles any day.
Steam doubles its revenue every year for the past 7 years. PC gaming is dying ...
