Persona 3 Really Is Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Down To The Smallest Characters

Kotaku: The wicked-cool video game Persona 3 is perhaps best described as "Basically, Buffy The Vampire Slayer reimagined at a super fashionable Japanese high school." If you're anything like me, that description alone would be enough to make you want to play.

And what do you know? I've been playing Persona 3 Portable essentially nonstop for the last month and a half, and the more I play, the more I realize: This game isn't just like Buffy, it practically is Buffy. Not only do both stories involve supernatural extermination set in a high school (Gekkoukan/Sunnydale) that doubles as a gateway for demons (Hellmouth/Tartarus), their respective casts of characters are practically a 1:1 match.

Don't believe me? Check it out. Here now, the cast of Persona 3 and their Buffy counterparts.

Okkkkk that's completely random and retarded . Slow day Kotaku ?

why am I not surprised? ._.

Well that was a pretty stupid read. I commend them for playing P3 though as everyone should experience that masterpiece :D

Well, I guess if you generalize enough, sure.

But then, what about all the characters left out? Igor, Elizabeth, all the teachers at the school and the other social links? I find it interesting that they only included the characters that fit. And then only put them in one given role.

The female protagonist may be the newcomer for a while, but she soon takes over the role of leader, while the former leader becomes number 2(number 1, in Star Trek terms; Akihiko would be number 2).

Ken supposedly showed up when no one wanted a new character, but he shows up about the same time as Koromaru(who they paint as an "early addition," which is completely untrue) and Shinji(who actually joins AFTER Ken). And he's critical to both Shinji and Akihiko's reasons for fighting.

Ikutsuki never comes off as a father figure to anyone, unlike Giles' role with Buffy. He's not even around enough for that. Giles also didn't tell awful jokes.

I could go on for every character noting the differences, but I hope I've made my point.

Tartarus, by the way, isn't a gateway into Hell at all(well, not in the sense meant here), but that would also ruin the whole parallel... like the fact that it wasn't the school in Buffy, but the town itself that was the Hellmouth.

Yeah, as I said, in a general enough sense, you can make the comparisons, but that's about it.

Baka-akaB4355d ago

It made no sense even in general ways , it failed at the very first comparison . And if going that way , Persona would be then ripping off countless school based anime shows existing prior anything buffy :p

Take a fluff-article for what it is (a silly filler article) and calm down.

As a fan of both those series I got a chuckle out of the comparisons. People shouldn't take these things so seriously.

shouldnt have even posted this imo lol

Persona 3 Director Says The Game Saved Atlus From Collapsing

The studio was on the verge of collapse when Persona 3 came out, and things were looking quite grim for Atlus. Regardless, many decisions made in the game paid off and became a staggering success.

Years ago, I was emulating the game on my laptop and the old thing died when I was about to get to the final boss. I'm more than happy to buy this remake when it comes out so I can finish it!

At the time I was immersed in SMT Nocturne and later DDS. I did not realize at all how important Persona would become for me years later.

Persona 3 FES was the first one that I played in the series. Looking forward to the remake.

I'll have to make this a mission the next time I blow through Tokyo.

Hopefully soon, given the limited availability.

send me one while you're at it. I mean what's better than Whiskey and Persona? A cigar with the two, and that would be perfection personified.
