A great opening doesnt save Transformers 2 from being a disapointment

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen was a great movie which improved on its predecessor. Transformers the game, parallel to the first installment, was a disappointment which didn't live up to the potential it had to be a fun game. Transformers the game wasn't fun from the very beginning and only had a few worthwhile moments in the middle; this was not the case with Revenge of the Fallen. When the began it was very surprisingly fun, the game play seemed to be unique and there were several formats to it, the scenarios kept changing for a while, like Optimus Prime having a fight while falling thousands of feet to the ground, Auto bots fighting off a huge decepticon using techniques, not only brawn, and a few other good moments. Unfortunately the good moments from the beginning of the game couldn't transpire to be an overall satisfying experience.

The story is a huge letdown; the game was released in parallel to the film so that support for the film could be bolstered and gamers having a backdrop to what the movie would offer. Fortunately for me I saw the film before playing the game as the plots of the two are very different. The protagonists of the film, the humans, don't make an appearance in the game and only have a voicing cameo right in the end. The events that are unfolding are very hard to understand as you don't know how and why a guy gets from USA to space to Egyt.Basically the story focuses on Auto bots battling the decepticons as usual, Megatron has been resurrected by the decepticons, a very boring mission which we have to do, Megatron somehow comes upon a ship he didn't even know existed and starts serving the fallen who he just seems to have met but suddenly starts serving. The Auto bots begin their resistance which triggers the second robot war on earth, too bad its really boring. So watch the movie before playing the game so that you could know what the real plot is and not be disappointed.

Game Play has changed from the previous installment. There are different formats and scenarios from time to time. The robots Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Megatron, Jetfire, Bumblebee, Sideways, Star Scream will be at your disposal. All of the characters virtually have same movements, light attacks are executed by the square button while Heavy attacks with triangle. There are two meters on the players left, one representing life and one power. Through power the player can regenerate their life by pressing R1 from time to time or power can also be used to deliver a destructive attack by pressing the down button in the D-Pad. Aiming is done by wiggling the right analog stick and shooting is executed by the R2 button, ammo is unlimited. The only way you can play as the transformed version of the robots is if the scenario has changed so that you have to fight as a plane or as a car, otherwise the only way to have a glimpse at your transformed version is when you are executing your power attack. The player does not have the option of free roam as they had in the previous game, missions are now level based with limited roaming options and a very bad camera to top it all off. The only use of technique is at the beginning of the game as the rest focuses just on smashing incoming enemies, to access other areas you have to kill the enemies or you will not be permitted to go ahead, making this game like most of the movie based games. Although the player plays as both the decepticons and the Auto bots, there is no choice given for campaigns unlike the PS3 version, supposedly after finishing a mission assigned to an Auto bot the next mission could portray you as a decepticon which makes it all the more confusing to understand what really is going on. Ultimately you are bound to find yourself tapping the triangle and square button throughout this very short game.

Graphics are another letdown as they aren't better compared even to the first installment. The Transformers look like toys or Action figures and the environment looks like a very bad drawing by a four year old. Voice acting is yet another failure as the transformers cant convince you that their is a war going on with their boring way of talking and repeating the same thing over and over again. The soundtrack although certainly not the best you will hear in a game isn't the biggest disappointment, the sound of the of the explosions and shooting can be heard cleanly and the music isnt all that bad either. The only thing that stands out a little are the extras, you can unlock gallery pictures by collecting them within the missions, there are illustrations as well as 3D pictures. The arena mode provides a chance for two players to have a go at the enemies together, which is quite fun and better than the campaign mode as you will have a friend to play with. Transformers fans have a chance to see the old classic animation cartoon of the original series which are three episodes so you can see the cartoon that you loved again.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen is a disappointment and lives up to what was expected as it joins the list of the disappointing movie based games. The thing that is pity full is that this game actually had the potential to be an enjoyable experience if they had made it longer than only 5-6 hours and sticked to the format of the beginning of the game and not turning it your basic movie based game where all you have to do is keep pressing the same buttons and do the same thing over and over again. Only transformer fans may have some fun with this, others should save their money and not be bothered by this Game.

I used to have a transformers game on my c64 back in the day. Loved that game. Never could get anywhere in this game though. Still played the hell out of it.

Transformers Armada and WFC are by far the best Transformer games. I urge anyone who hasn't yet played them to do so asap.

Empire: Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen Review

Empire writes: "For Transformers fanboys, Revenge Of The Fallen is a wild and explosive wet dream come true. Featuring a huge range of controllable Autobots and Decepticons – each of which whirr and clunk with detail, and look intimidating as they tower over puny human cityscapes – the deranged action is brought to life by intuitive controls that allow players to scramble up the side of skyscrapers, rain death on their opponents then transform into a military chopper to make a quick getaway, all with the simplest of button strokes."
