Hideo Kojima is the devil. Or maybe God, or something with mystical powers. That is the only explanation for how he managed to put this game on the PlayStation Portable. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is a gorgeous game and, to top it all off, it has more stuff to do than pretty much any Metal Gear game ever.
The story itself is about 17 hours long but you will more than likely put more than 30 into the game before beating it. The controls, for once on the PSP, are great. The new "shooter" type control, in spite of it's name, makes it much easier to sneak around. However the original MGS: PO controls are still there. You go through a few tutorial levels before the game really picks up but once it does you'll be playing it non-stop.
This is the most beautiful game on the PSP hands down. Not only is it graphically superior to anything I've seen on the platform but it's art direction is quite genius. The cutscenes are what really brings it out. They are like the comic book like cutscenes from Portable Ops but much more polished and just in general more compelling. There will be several times where you will have to do a quicktime event to keep you from just setting down your PSP.
Another thing to keep you from putting down your PSP is the story. It's compelling, it's symbolic, it's beautiful. It avoids being as convoluted as previous MGS' and still provides one of the strongest narratives in Metal Gear history.
A new feature has been added to Peace Walker that we have never seen in a Metal Gear game. Co-Op. This is probably one of the best features in PW. Justin and I put quite a bit of time in this and tackled some of the hardest bosses. Teamwork has never been this fun.
The thing that really let me down in Peace Walker was the difficulty of some missions. Some of these missions are near impossible without the assistance of a friend(via adhoc). Yes the Co-Op is wonderful but it would be nice for the difficulty curve to adjust according to the amount of people in the game.
The Bosses. Oh dear the Bosses. What would a Metal Gear game be without Bosses? Nothing. But don't fret. This game has some of the coolest bosses I've seen of late. You fight AI's most of the time and these AI's are crazy. The haunting tune they sing will stick with you forever. FOREVER.
Ok, I'm gonna wrap up this review so I can go back to playing the game. So basically this is one of the best Metal Gear's ever. In my opinion it's better than MGS4 but not as good as MGS3. It's great. If you have a PSP buy it. If you don't have a PSP get it. And if you don't want it you are dead to me.
The must play PSP Games every gamer will enjoy.
It feels like the PlayStation Portable doesn't get the love that it deserves, so here are the best PSP games if you're picking one up for the first time.
some really good games on that list. some of my favorites (not on the list) are Metal Slug XX, ultimate Ghosts & Goblins, Gradius Collection, Motorstorm Arctic Edge and Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters.
I get that The Warriors is technically a PS2 game ported over, but damn it's amazing on the PSP
Few of my favs Off the top. Midnight club 3,GTA Stories liberty/Vice,god of war and locoRoco
VGChartz's Issa Maki: "Even to fans, the thought that a T-rated game could rank as the greatest is virtually unthinkable; how could the best Metal Gear possibly be a handheld title on a system less powerful than a PlayStation 2? Because it had to be – necessity is the mother of invention. Not only is this a full-fledged Metal Gear, the fresh spin on the gameplay draws from several sources outside of its wheelhouse. Peace Walker somehow manages to be less like its predecessor, Portable Ops, and more akin to Metal Gear Solid V. What boggles the mind is that it would be over five years before The Phantom Pain would release, an entire generation later."
to stated the points well, and i have to agree completely on the usefulness of co-op, im currently playing this game and the bosses are impossible to beat without a friend!
To be honest I'm waiting for my copy to maildrop. However I played the demo on PSN store (really meaty demo) and the last boss was very fun and while challenging, it didnt feel overwhelmingly hard.
Are the other bosses a lot harder than this? It can not be worse than Demons Souls though
:D
If I had to rate the demo I'd give it the same score you did to the full game. Very fun, addictive but I'm not sold at all on the story and take a bit to get used to the controls. Probably it will make much more sense in the retail game.
So is this game actually that hard to beat on your own? I was kind of looking forward to beating it myself.
Hey nice review. I am currently playing and loving this game. One thing I'd like to emphasize is that the story is REALLY good, and it is one of the biggest stories in the entire MGS series due to the "briefing files". I don't want to spoil anything but there are so many background stories and plot revelations through the hours and hours (and hours) of audio files included in this game, which is in ADDITION to the excellent story of the "main" game.
