It was reported just recently by Capcom over on their Unity boards that the highly anticipated 3DS title, Megaman Legends 3, has been cancelled. This cancellation may not seem like a total surprise because many had speculated that this would happen after Megaman Universe was also kicked to the curb once Infanue left Capcom.
When Capcom unexpectedly cancelled Mega Man Legends 3 last month, fans flooded the internet with questions. What went wrong? Why was the publisher abandoning a project it’d announced only one year earlier? Was the community to blame since this was partially a community- developed games? SCRAWL: "Capcom's been going all out lately, having recently announced sequels to their first shots at next-gen development, Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Combine those titles with their already announced Bionic Commando, Dark Void, Resident Evil 5, and their recently released Street Fighter IV, and Capcom has one hell of a line-up for 2009. Since the beginning of the Mega Man Legends 3 Project, Capcom has put forth the impression that the 3DS game is in danger -- that it hasn't been green-lit, and needs lots of interest and participation from fans to avoid being axed at any second. Even with the impending release of a playable demo, that hasn't changed. In a Capcom-Unity blog post, director Masakazu Eguchi explained that the "Prototype Version" being released on the 3DS eShop is based on the prototype the team built to convince Capcom to let development continue, being released to the public after an "unprecedented agreement." "Furthermore," Eguchi said, "the heat and excitement surrounding this downloadable title would determine whether or not the full game could be green-lit. If hype is strong, the full title will be a go. If not, it's a no-go." With Prototype Version, it'll be easy to measure "hype" in sales.
Capcom’s cancellation of Megaman Legends 3 was the last straw. Legends 3, the long-awaited sequel to the reasonably-popular spin-off Megaman series, was evidently close to completion. A demo version of Legends 3 was released on the Nintendo eShop in 2011. Oddly enough, the demo cost $2.50.
