Medal of Honor – Campaign review

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Developer: Danger Close (Singleplayer), DICE (Multiplayer)
ESRB Rating: M for Blood, Strong Language, Violence
Console: Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Cost: $59.99

I enjoy my first person shooters. Not necessarily for the online play, but more for the campaign than anything. I like to take my time through the campaign and soak up the story, and explore where I can. I’m also glad to see EA bring the Medal of Honor franchise into the modern era of combat. Moreso, I enjoy how they presented it to the player (and not how the media perceived it).

Story

Story is the biggest part of a single player campaign. While you have to have good game mechanics, a game is only as good as the story. I think Danger Close did a fantastic job in this respect.

Through the campaign, you play primarily from the point of view of three soldiers. A DEVGRU Operator callsigned “Rabbit”, a Delta Force sniper, callsign “Deuce”, and U.S. Army Ranger Dante Adams. Following their three smaller stories as part of the bigger whole. As you play through the game, you are dropped into a number of operations in the country of Afghanistan to combat the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and mercenary fighters. The events of which are supposedly loosely based off of the events of Operation: Anaconda.

The story is very solid and you get a real sense of comraderie between the characters involved. As you’re fighting alongside your AI brothers, there’s a lot of dialogue to keep the story flowing beyond the typical “move to checkpoint, enable cutscene” type stories. And while I burned through the game in about five hours on Medium, which to me felt about right, I was still sad to see it end.

Gameplay

This is where MOH takes a real hit. While for the most part the gameplay was very solid, and the controls very intuitive, there are a few glitches in the game that I found somewhat annoying.
For one, the environment boxes really needed to be more fine tuned in the game. There were areas where I would run into an invisible wall a few feet before hitting the environment wall, mostly in canyon areas. It was also very frustrating that some spots where I felt I should have been able to jump over (such as windows with blown out roofs) I was not, and some areas where I should have been able to sneak around a building to flank an enemy, I was not allowed to run around. I found myself more than once taking rounds while trying to figure out how to navigate through a map.

Spawn points for the enemies at times were just plain retarded. In a couple of missions I was actually able to sneak around behind the enemy spawns, and just gun the soldiers down as they appeared. While amusing the first time or two, I quickly became annoyed at how easily I was able to do this in some areas.
Last but not least, I encountered framerate and sound crashes a couple of times. Not where the game crashes or locks up, but rather the framerate just takes a dive and the sound goes the heck for a quick second. In my two encounters of this happening, it didn’t really affect the gameplay, but I was surprised at the lack of polish for such a big title release.

In Conclusion

Overall I enjoyed Medal Of Honor’s campaign. The story was well done and for the most part the gameplay was enjoyable with its minor hitches. But if you were to ask if I would pay for it new again? I would most likely say “no”. It would be better if you waited for it to hit the $19.99 rack. While many people play the game just for the multiplayer (which I’ll be reviewing later this week), I cannot see the justification of buying this new on the shelf.

That was a pretty decent review but I can't help but notice how you and I have completely different thoughts on Story and Game-play but still come to the conclusion that, while it's a good game, it's not worth a full $60.

I never ran into a single problem like the ones you listed, but I have heard of other complaints from different people that there were quite a few bugs and the enemy A.I. and some people did have problems navigating from point A to B. To me the weakest aspect of this game was the story mode, It doesn't matter whether you play it on Easy, Medium or Hard it's always a five to six hour run through.

While I enjoyed the experience I thought the conclusion felt more like a Prelude than anything. It sets everything up and then just decides to leave you hanging, I can't stand that in games especially FPS's. That was a good read, and I would like to add that I thought the multi-player was quite enjoyable if not a little too chaotic and broken.

Medal of Honor 2010 was a good start for a modern reboot. The campaign was fantastic. Multiplayer wasn't great but that's DICE's fault. I'd love if they went back to that game and gave it a proper sequel.

I actually really liked the multiplayer in MoH 2010. Battlefield gunplay on small maps. I would love to see a Rising sun remake, the opening scene would be amazing to see.

I enjoyed the multiplayer of MoH 2010. It felt like battlefield 3 in a way. The multiplayer in Warfighter was also pretty good but the campaigns single player story was not appealing with the whole family cutscene thing. Gameplay was fun though. MoH to me is the PS1/2 titles and I don’t expect to see a WW2 MoH after the last Call of Duty’s

PS1 MOH 1999 and 2000 (Underground) and Allied Assault PC is my childhood.. it's still soo good and it holds up. Not to mention Michael Giacchino's soundtrack is one of the best video game soundtracks ever made. Even if you weren't born in early to mid 90's go listen to the main theme of Allied Assault and you will be overloaded from nostalgia.

I miss this franchise a lot.

I’ve always thought that MOH and Battlefield should be separate…

Have MOH as the full fledged single player with an amazing store and whatnot. And a basic multiplayer just to have multiplayer. Sorta like how the MOH reboot was.

And then have BF as the full fledged multiplayer with all effort put into that and ditch the single player. Maybe add Commander back in.

Only in a perfect world.

Oh man medal of honor on pc was awesome back in the day. Multi-player was fun. Joined my first clan on medal of honor. Definitely deserves a comeback. But needs to be on the same level or surpass COD. Since it came out before that ip in 1999 to avoid embarrassment.

The guys who did Allied assault are the one who created call of duty. They're back at EA, Vince something

I'll be the weird guy in the room and say I actually loved Warfighter. I thought the squad mechanics made it stand out a bit and thought the shooting felt good. Put a lot of time into the multiplayer.

Xfire writes "As you'll soon learn, while it is true that some popular banned video games do at least warrant the censorship or ban they received, some games were banned from sale for some pretty weird and radical reasons."

i dont get censorship in games.
they have warnings on the boxings, age ratings, drug use warnings, strong language and sexual themes and many more.

its not so much the government's job to censor, as it is for parents to make sure their kids dont play those games. and those who are easily disturbed or sensitive, should stay away from them.
i do understand that some things might be triggering for some but.... why do ppl suck so much lol.

but being in debt before 18 or 21 is highly acceptable somehow ha

seriously.

Highrevz1128d ago

I’m glad there’s not much censorship in the UK towards video games. Reading bully was banned confused me as i don’t recall that at all.

Nintendo has always been bashed for its censorship (green blood in MK controversy) and then they gave us some dark moments like Crocomire’s death in Super Metroid and even let us strangle people to death with the Wii controller. It’s like they have tried at times but there image is very much Cemented as family friendly so I don’t think they will ever be able to stray far from that.

I remember my mom coming home from work with a copy of Thrill Kill and saying “I heard this games banned so I got you a copy” 🙌
Honestly the game wasn’t even that bad, there’s far worse content in books and movies.

Fist4achin1128d ago

Thrill kill at the time was edgy, but there has been much worse. Fun times with Imp the pimp!

honestly, its up to the parents and the players on what kind of experience they want to have, not the publisher.
